The Bays Old Boys cook in the Heat

Over 40’s Division 1

In the competitive arena of the CGC Over 40's Division, the clash between Loganholme and Runaway Bay at Tansey Park was not just another fixture; it was a showcase of dedication and resilience amongst seasoned players. The match, part of Round 9, saw Loganholme post a challenging total of 141 runs after being bowled out in just over thirty-eight overs. Runaway Bay took to the crease with determination, looking to chase down their opponents' score. Andrew Gross emerged as a key figure for his team, top-scoring with a composed innings of 27 runs off 43 balls, striking three boundaries along the way. Ben McDermott and Shaun Gannon also made notable contributions with scores of 20 and 19 respectively, but ultimately the batting line-up faced difficulties against Loganholme’s disciplined bowling attack. On the bowling front for Runaway Bay, Travis Harker stood out by claiming two wickets for just sixteen runs in seven overs, maintaining an impressive economy rate of only 2.29. His efforts were complemented by Michael Schumacher and Ben McDermott who also took two wickets each, showcasing a commendable team effort in dismantling Loganholme’s batting order. Despite their spirited performance and notable individual achievements, Runaway Bay found themselves falling short as they were all out for just 105 runs in under thirty-five overs. The match highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses inherent within amateur cricket—where every run counts and teamwork is paramount. Though they did not secure victory this time around, Runaway Bay Cricket Club demonstrated resilience that will surely serve them well as they progress through the season.

Over 40’s Division 2

Round 9 saw us take on Alberton 40s Division 2 at Pimpama Island Sports Centre / QIA Oval, after inspecting the pitch in overcast conditions, we had a group discussion & thought bowling 1st may be the way to go, hoping the pitch gave something for the bowlers. With our usual skipper Col missing this match I was asked to take the reins; heads were called & off to a flyer winning the toss we elected to bowl.

With a few regulars missing this game, we had some lads help us out making a team of 10.

Chris opened us up and bowled very tight & was quite unlucky not to have a few early ones, with Matt Trickey doing all the damage early picking up 4 wickets off his 7 for 8 runs, the opening bowlers bowled well as a group restricting Alberton’s run flow. I decided to have a bowl 1st change and managed to snare a wicket 1st ball (appealing for LBW then realizing the ball had bowled the batter) at this point we had them 5 for 33. Craig helping us out then came in & bowled some tidy spin picking up a few quick wickets including an appeal for LBW that was quickly given out by the umpire (after chatting with Greg the filling keeper for the day was very surprised it was giving out and to the batter’s disgust was giving the umpire a few kind words that ended with him getting a card.

Tony & Arron came with Tony picking up a few wickets have Alberton 8 for 49. With 2 wickets to get we had a little break in play with Matt sighting a little baby brown snake cutting through the ground, to our surprise Alberton’s Captain decided to man handle the little intruder to the boundary line. This little halt in proceedings gave Alberton a chance to re-group & last 2 wickets put on nearly forty extra leaving us 87 runs for victory.

Peter & Geoff opened up for us getting us off to a steady start with Geoff being given LBW (which would end up being our teams form of dismissal) 1st wicket to fall at 24 runs, Greg came in next with conditions getting harder to bat, Greg & Peter batted well putting on another 26 until Greg was given out LBW with a ball that looked to hit quite high. Peter was still in the mood for some quick runs in the heat smacking the ball all over the park scoring 33 off 32 by far the best on ground & was joined by Chris who was another batter falling out LBW with one that we heard the sound of willow from the shed, unluckily once Peter was bowled the wickets kept on flowing with us slumping from being in a strong position 3 for 58 to being bowled out for 77 falling 10 runs short.

Huge shout out to the boys who helped us out for this game, spirits where high having them bowled out for 86 runs but unfortunately, we fell short, that’s cricket for you  (I blame that little pesky brown snake).

Massive shout out to Matt Trickey picking up 4 wickets & the boys fielding & bowling so well keeping the pressure on and Peter with his cracking 33, we will bounce back.

Thanks again for helping me with the captaining being my 1st time representing the club in this capacity had a great time but Col you can have it back ha ha.

Cheers

Over 50’s Orange

The Bay 50s Orange Headed out to the Cane Fields at Jacobs Well to take
on Shane Riley Alberton Lads .

The Ground and Pitch looked in good condition on a very Hot Day .

A Huge Thank You to Matty Edwards - Phil Holzinger - Murray Whyte & Rod
Venn filling in for us this round .

The Bay won the Toss and elected to Bat first hoping the breeze would
pick up across the afternoon to cool things down in the field .

Phil & Lee opened up the Batting with Lee going quickly caught & bowled .

Phil was then joined by the reliable Jimmy Phillips who peeled of
another magnificent 50 not out in very Hot Conditions against some
quality bowling .

Phil was looking good till he slashed at one outside off stump and was
caught at deep gully .

Bobby and Muzz joined each other at the creased trying to out muscle
each other smashing balls to the rope  in very quick time with both
getting caught playing their shots for  25 from similar balls faced .

Paul came in next and went quickly with the Skip holding up the other end finishing our 40 overs at 8/158 , probably 40 - 50 runs short of a great target .

Alberton Opened the Batting with Jamie Pitt and David Bonser who set the game up for Alberton with Jamies clean hitting to & over the ropes scoring 50 from 44 balls and Bonser

holding up the other end scoring 50 from 85 balls .

Terry Blacktopp , Rod Venn ,Matty Edwards & Paul Gardiner worked very hard in the Heat with The King and Murray Whyte bowling great lines at the death .

Alberton chasing us dowm in the 32nd over 1 down for 163 .

As said if we put on another 40 - 50 runs it would have gone down to the wire .

Another great game of Vets cricket and always a pleasure to play against Riles and his Lads at Alberton .

Cheers .

Matty .
