Senior Match Reports  Week 12/10/2024

Premier League First Grade

First away game for the year and got changed from one ground to another. A trip out into the cane fields and Wowee was it hot.

I lost the toss and they decided to have a bat on what looked like quite an underprepared wicket. We started off with Morgan and Ben canning again with Morgan pulling up with a bug and unable to finish his third over we turned to Jake secombe who bowled well. They got away a little bit from us in the power play until we tightened up 1 over and got a nice run out by Ben Houghton. They continued to put the pressure on us before we got another wicket with a sharp juggle behind the stumps by Josh cox. We turned to the best leg spinner in the league BANGERS who didn't let us down and we though we had another wicket within 2 balls with the batsmen edging one to first slip. He didn't walk and well the umpire didn't give him out either.

That started a decent partnership for them as we just couldn't get a breakthrough even with bangers and trav bowling well on a partnership. We kept fighting on taking wickets here and there and they finished 9-217.Again we let it get away but with a short boundary to once side we thought if we batted well we were still within a chance. Unfortunately we lost an early wicket in the first over and then a couple more. Their openers bowled well and we were 3 down inside 10 overs. Corey Hucker and bangers put on a well needed partnership before we lost bangers.

Corey hucker showed us how it's done again with the bat and made a very good 42 before he departed with a leading edge. Our lower order fought it out the best they could but ultimately we were bowled out for 106. We know where we need to improve and we will get there lads just gotta keep working hard.

Big test coming up this week so let's be ready.

Premier League Second Grade

‘Your call mate’. ‘Heads it is’. ‘We’ll have a bat’. Round 3 of the season saw the Bay 2s gracing the crowd at Loxton 1 for the first time this season. With the ground looking fantastic and more grass on the deck than I’d seen for years, I wasn’t too upset to have lost the toss and to be sent into the field. Fielding a side made up of youngsters, oldsters and Chris Bartlett, I think we all smelt the possibility of a W on the warm stiff, north-easterly breeze. Hayden Kyle (2/32 from 5) and returning first grader Stephen Watson took up the new ball. Mr Kyle decided to loosen up by bowling an 8 ball over to get us underway. At the other end Steve-Slayer Watson (1/33 from 6), was on the money from ball 1. With a wrap on the pad and before the second over of the match had run it’s course, Alberton were 1/11 thanks to Steve. Hayden found his radar at the other end as he picked up two big wickets. The first caught at slip and the second to an extremely good catch low at gully to the fielders left. Jawid (1/11 from 4) came on and hooped one into a batters pad while Noodle Austin began to apply the Bay Squeeze from the southern end. Though they were 5 down the Alberton boys had 98 runs on the board at drinks which meant we needed to strike quickly thereafter to make sure we had a chasable total.

As sure as one of Phil’s Saturday morning rants about the top dressing, the wind, the rain, the moon landing or what the juniors had done to his pitch, Austin (2/22 from 8) turned up for us as he picked up steady wickets for very few runs after the break. Nayeef, supported Noodle fantastically well by bamboozling the opposition as he returned figures of 2/30 (8). Will Marron (1/5 from 2) and Craig Bartlett (1/14 from 4.2) closed out the innings as we dismissed a side for the first time this season with a total of 152 required for victory.

After his solid knock last week, Varun opened up with Gus Richardson. Sadly for us (particularly Varun), the breeze had dropped off completely by 3pm and as the afternoon wore on, it only seemed to get hotter and hotter. Gus was the first one to go to a dubious looking LBW. Amir and Jawid followed shortly after meaning that when I crawled out to the crease we were 3/24 after 10 and in a deep hole. While I snicked the ball for the next 40mins or so, Varun soldiered on and frustrated the opposition by looking dismissible just about every ball but not actually losing his wicket. Gotta give it to him though, Varun’s approach of looking all at sea for the first 5 balls of every other then hitting the 6th straight down the ground for a 1 bounce four, was a pretty effective formula. We stumbled through to drinks at 3/64 with a lot of work still to be done.

Thankfully for us, drinks didn’t bring a wicket as it so often does and Varun and I resumed our work. The heat coupled with my pressure to keep running 2s and 2s, finally began to get to Varun as he confronted me mid-pitch saying ‘I can’t do this anymore. I just have to slog’. ‘Huh? The first 27 overs of your innings wasn’t slogging?’, I thought to myself. All jokes aside it was an important, hilarious but extremely effective innings and when Varun finally holed out to mid-off, he had 44(63) we only had 60odd to get. Matt Baker (6 from 5) replaced Varun as he and I really put the pressure back on by running twos and forcing changes to the field until he too copped a harsh decision as he was adjudged caught behind. With his shiny new RBCC 1st grade had turned backwards under his lid, Chris Bartos met me in the middle and we agreed that we were going to the 30 or so needed from 10. I then promptly guided one straight to gully for what has to be the stupidest dismissal this week. Will Marron saw the writing on the wall, summed up the situation, slogged one then got clean bowled to leave us at 7/133 with 8 overs remaining. “Surely not boys, surely not”! When Nayeef reckoned he missed one by a foot that was given out caught behind, the Bay collapse was well and truly on the cards at 8/139.

Now, between the falling of the 7th and 8th wickets, Steve Watson approached me to ask if he could bat. Owing to a number of reasons (which I won’t go into), we had been left with 11 batters to choose from our original 12, so of course I responded ‘yes mate, would you like to go in next?’ Without a moment’s hesitation and accompanied by a steely gaze Steve said ‘Yes. I want to. I… I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t taking someone else’s spot’. I assured Steve that if he was confident he could get the job done, I’d back him. That was until he then pressed by asking ‘what’s the plan?’ After confirming his job as being one relying more on his bipedalism than batting prowess, Steve strode out to the middle with the sole instruction of ‘When Chris shouts at you, run as fast as you can to the other end. And if he shouts at you again, run back to where you started’. ‘Gotcha!’ As promised, Stevie delivered as Carl Barret 21* (42) safe as houses, at the other end guided us to victory with 2 overs and one wicket to spare. An exceptional knock from Kris, who’s movements were restricted after his shirt shrank in the wash this week. He remained cool and calm under immense pressure to seal the deal.

After shaking hands we the piled into the sheds for what was undoubtedly the most awkward and off-key team song I’ve ever been a part of.

A great effort this week fellas. That was our best bowling and fielding performance thus far. We need to set a solid platform up the top of the order but that will come with match fitness and experience. Looking forward to taking the game to Mudgee on their home turf next week fellas and potentially practising that song a little more.

 Patrick.

Premier League Third Grade

We lost the toss at home and were asked to field against Alberton. I didn't consider it a bad toss to lose as there was a bit of moisture still in the wicket, but we couldn't find our length an didn't attack the stumps enough.

The umpire wasn't in position for a run out at the bowler's end in the 3rd over, which their captain was nearly a foot, plus a few misfields caused a bit of frustration.

The bowling performance was haphazard with good balls consistently spoilt with loose deliveries. Once again extras hurt us, 8nb, 10w. Inexcusable to be unable to keep the ball between the lines and below the waist on the full.

The batters rode their luck, with numerous balls beating the edge or skimming the stumps and catches just out of reach.

Our middle overs leaked boundaries all over the place and is something we will focus on re-strategising to tie down. Early in the season, we have changed bowlers up to give opportunities and get some overs into everyone. Moving forward, we will be less lenient on erratic bowling and bowlers will have to earn their overs by doing their jobs better.

Highlights - James Munro bowled tidily for 0/20 off 5. Will Secombe showing mental resilience after his first poor over and pitching a few in the right spot finishing with 3/39 off 6 including 2 good block-hole death overs. Hayden Gill claiming his first senior scalp with a peach of a middle stump yorker and starting to narrow his radar. Stephen Wolf bowling a couple of not horrible pitched up meds overs at the end of innings.

Best fielding of the day - Jamie Lennix using his face to field a ball diving forward. Shedding blood for the team and showing the youngsters how to get behind the ball. Love it!

Alberton 6/259 off 40

We opened with Jed Sessarago and new player, John Deitz who hadn't played for 5 years. The Alberton bowlers were more accurate than us and it took a few overs for the runs to start flowing. John's timing was a bit rusty and he snicked off to a wide one, bringing James Munro in at 3. James and Jed batted really well together before James departed for 28 followed not long after by Jed Sessarago for a very well constructed 51 off 63.

Stephen Wolf and Muhammad Hamza had to get on with it as the required run rate was up to 10/over and they put on a quick-fire partnership which kept us within reach. Wolf hit 28 off 25 and Hamza 22 off 19.

For the rest of the innings we tried our best, but we were chasing too many and lost a few wickets due to scoreboard pressure.

The opposition wanted us to concede and call the game 4 overs early (so the umpire could have a beer/bad light??) and I was having none of that. I batted out the overs with Hayden Gill to give him some experience and also because, well...it was the opposite of what they wanted.

We finished up 9/198 and the future looks good for our squad if we can build and maintain pressure bowling and in the fielding circle.

 Till next week,

Grossy

We rolled up to Loxton 3 where Schuey had already erected the tent, which was all he did for the day after injuring his little toe tripping down the stairs at 2am, reaching for another Tooheys Blue, so he couldnt bowl. Our part time skipper decided 3yo birthday parties are not his thing so he decided to turn up & ultimately won the toss & decided to have a bat. We got off to a solid start with new opening pair Conan Dunning & Col Wakefield. Conan was the first to go with a run a ball 37 which brought Josh Foe to the crease but he departed soon after for 15. Our newest recruit Chris (Fridge) Nilon was next & he tried hitting every ball into another postcode but could only manage 1 run, earning him the new nickname, the Esky! Col was next to go for a patient 31, followed by Andy Foe for 10, then Critto for a rapid 29. That brought Gerard (Jerry) Birrell & Gary (The Real) McCoy together & they batted the remaing overs with Bizza not out for 73 from 59 & Gary 16 from 19. We finished 6/228 from our 36. We opened the bowlig with the youngest of the Foenander triplets in Josh & Nate, Josh 0/9 & Nate 0/27. Bonogin, not even trying to chase the runs, proceeded to bore the shit out of us, losing their first wicket for 52 captured by Andy Foe, for his first wicket for the Bay, finishing with 1/13 from 3. At that stage Bonogin were 2/60 off 18 at drinks. After drinks we introduced Chris Nilon 2/11, Jerry Birrell 2/11 & Craig (Snitty, I’m not playing, I’ll just field, ok I’ll bowl as well) McGhie, who was back to his best with 4/9 from 2.5 overs, Bonogin losing their last 8 wickets for 25 runs from 6.5 overs. Col Wakefield decided he’d seen enough so he left early saying he had to bring his boat in which was he worst excuse to leave early since Mark McKenzie left to buy kittie litter! Thanks to Mel Wakefield for supplying all the snacks for the day which prompted a few boys to suggest that might be the only reason Col gets a game! Until next week.... Jamie Hunt

6th Grade Navy

Here it is - In the second game of the season we were up against another Bonogin side. Chris lost the toss again and we were put into bat. Both Geoffs started our innings off, playing some nice shots, until Geoff McQueen had unfortunate luck and was caught, leaving us 1 for 23. Chris Schultz came in at number 3 and gained cheeky singles all over the ground and at drinks we were 1 for 53. Gaining some confidence Chris and Geoff Watson pushed the run rate up. Chris’s entertaining innings came to an end after chopping the ball on to his stumps for a well fought 34 off 27. Due to the unquestionable bounce on Sam Loxton 4 it put us under the pump. We lost Geoff Watson for 22 off 52, James Keith for 5 off 16 and Aran Canning for 1 off 9. This left us on 5 for 99 after 25 overs. Flynn and Hamish steadied the ship and gained momentum, making a good fight back. Bonogin struck right back and Hamish fell for a nice 10 from 21, then Toby 1 off 6. Now we were 7-134 after 31 overs. Some classy shots from Flynn got our scorecard ticking over. Soon after another 3 quick wickets were lost, Flynn for a tough 23 from 45, Will 3 off 7, then finally Jake 8 off 5. This put the team in a good position going into bowl with a nice 159 on the board. Our bowling innings started off a flyer as Jake and Toby bowled good areas leading to back-to-back wickets from Toby but just fell short of a hat-trick. Jake and Toby bowled all the way till the first drinks break with Bonogin for 2 for 23. This brought the Cannings on to bowl and they continued their dominance with Hamish just falling short of taking a 5-fa and Arran taking 1 wicket. Geoff Waston only bowled one over but was effective, collecting 2 wickets with an outstanding catch in the slips by Jake and also some great wicket keeping from Flynn meant we were in control of this game with Bonogin 8 for 82 at the second drinks break. Bringing both McQueens on to bowl to end this game, which is what they did, with Geoff McQueen picking up a wicket bowling Bonogin out for 98. It was a great game with Runaway Bay winning by 61 runs.

6th Grade Orange

6th Grade Orange V Helensvale Green Won the toss and we had a bat. As we have smashed Helensvale over the last few years I thought l would give some of the other guys a bat up the order as we had a strong batting line up but things turned ugly very quickly. 1/9 then 2/11 then 3/12 then 4/25 then 5/28. Myself and Rob got us to 5/52 at the half way mark but a lot of work was needed in the 2nd half. After a 51 run partnership Rob got out for 30 and apart from myself (83x) no one else got to double figures. We managed to get to 9/153 and we thought that was going to be hard to get with the extremely slow out field. Things did not start as well as we had hoped but Matt came on and picked up the first wicket at 33. Arron Cosmo playing his first game for the club had a bit of trouble getting the ball on line but when he did the wickets started to fall ending with 3/31. Matt picked up a second wicket thanks to a great catch by Kaeleb and at the half way mark they were 5/88. The game was tight but we were unable to hold on to some tough chances and they got home 8 down with 2 overs to spare.
