Halloween Edition
Premier League First Grade
In a tense encounter at Hession Oval, Helensvale 1st Grade triumphed over Runaway Bay Premier Div 1 by 28 runs, marking an important moment in the CGC Premier League - Division 1. The match showcased the competitive spirit of both teams, with Helensvale setting a challenging target after scoring 199 runs in their allotted overs. Despite a spirited chase from Runaway Bay, who managed to score 171 runs, they fell short against a disciplined bowling attack. Key performances from Runaway Bay included Rhys Howarth, who top-scored with a solid half-century of 60 runs off just 60 balls, displaying his ability to anchor the innings with three fours and three sixes. Freddie Fowler also contributed significantly with his bat, adding valuable runs (42) while showcasing resilience throughout his innings. On the bowling front, Fowler was exceptional as well—taking four wickets for just 14 runs in eight overs—demonstrating his all-round capabilities and keeping Helensvale's batsmen under pressure. Despite the loss, Runaway Bay showed commendable determination and skill on the field. Their efforts were highlighted by Adnan Hussain's contribution of 21 runs and Dhiraj Ahuja’s two wickets for only 22 runs from five overs. The match dynamics reflected not just individual brilliance but also teamwork and strategy from both sides. While Helensvale emerged victorious this time around, Runaway Bay’s players demonstrated their potential and fighting spirit that will surely serve them well in future encounters.
Premier League Second Grade
A hot, sultry day with strong north-easterlies greeted the Bay 2s at Loxton One for the Round 10 fixture against a strong Helensvale side. Following 2 weeks of washouts (points against Palmy), the boys were hot to trot. After another lost toss and with five minutes before the scheduled start of play, we could not figure out what the Helensvale side was doing out on the field. As the Hogs continued with their regimented fielding drills, Mr Davies queried, ‘they do know they’re batting right?’ Luckily Cam’s question as posed within earshot of the umpire who shot back, ‘No they aren’t, they’re bowling’. ‘Huh?’ I grunted. Yep, that’s right, somehow I had misheard/misinterpreted the Helensvale skipper who won the toss and elected to BOWL. ‘Sh&TTTTT!!!!. Quick boys, pad up’. After a hurried kit-up, Mitch and Varun made it out to the middle just in time for the first ball. Mitch saw off the first over shortly before Varun decided that it was upon him to pick up the scoring. Varun advanced down the wicket on his first ball only to chop on to a delivery pitching two feet outside off (1/2). ‘Gee, did it swing back in mate?’ ‘No. It was dead straight’… Enter Timmy (formerly Turkey Tim) Mudoch. Soon after marking centre and taking stock of the field, Timmy caressed his first ball through cover point for a boundary with all the elegance of Mark Waugh. The score sat at 22 as Mitch snicked off for 11(19) and once again, it was my turn to dawdle out to the middle. Even though the innings was only 7 overs old, the field had spread to allow a little freedom, so the writing was on the wall – push the field and look to hit gaps. After hitting six runs from the first 5 balls I faced, I was greeted with the obligatory sledges from the Hogs about not being able to hit in front of cover… Or something to that effect. On this day, the 7th December 2024, Timmy played as well as I have ever seen. As he whipped balls off his legs, guided deliveries through gaps at point and fine leg and chipped over the field with precision he looked in complete control. While I preyed on the junior leg spinner, Timmy did the hard yards by taking on the quicks. Despite being slowed down a little towards the end of his innings, Tim finished his 2nd Grade career best of 66 (102) which really was of the highest order. True to Helensvale’s values, rather than being congratulated on his knock, Timmy was advised (free of charge) by one of the Hogs ‘Sh*t shot to a S^%t ball mate’. Displaying the same class he exuded throughout his innings, Timmy returned fire with, ‘Thanks mate’. Timmy and I managed to put on a partnership equalling that of Lucas and McPhee in Round 1 of the season of 141 runs before Timmy fell. Surely a partnership that would put us in a great position to push for points… With six overs to go and the score at 163, the stage was set perfectly for the team hero Jawid to hit us to a winning score. Sadly, whether he was hiding form the grades committee or suffering from lower-back soreness from carrying the team the last few matches, Jawid just wasn’t quite able to get the big shots away and only managed 4(18). I was lucky enough to finish unbeaten 84*(96), albeit being a little apprehensive about our chances. After being in a spot to push for a 220+ score, I suspected that we were well under par with a score of 184. The you Helensvale seamers executed their death bowling extremely well by pitching the ball full and side of the off stump in the last 6 overs. Despite my reservations, we marched out (except me. I stumbled) for the second innings knowing that runs on the board are the only currency in this game. Stevie Watson (2/37 from 7) took the new ball from the northern end and wasted no time snicking off Helensvale's opener with a sharp catch by Jamie Lennix at first slip (1/0). Nayeef supported Stevie from the southern end but was uncharacteristically out of sorts. With names such a S.Baker, L. Poeppman and N.Ford to his name already this season, Stevie continued on his merry way of slaying GC Cricket 1st grade stalwarts, by adding B. Lee to his list of victims. When Benji sliced one to cover the score was just 2/23. Sadly for us, Helensvale's 3 and 4 came together to form a partnership that exceeded 100 before they both decided to throw their wickets away. Both Creed and ******* batted extremely well and aggressively, hitting the ball to all parts. But it was ultimately left to the Hogs skipper to get the job done and drag his side over the line. Tidy spells from Nathan Rudd (2/36 from 7) and Jamie Lennix (1/27 from 3.4) saw us cling on until the 32nd over before we eventually succumbed to the opposition. That wasn't a bad performance by any standards boys. Helensvale have been a good side in the top few grades for several years now. Barring some quick runs at the end of our batting innings and a few more breakthroughs early when we bowled, we really couldn't have done too much more. A good performance and I am proud to say that we held our own against a side who will doubtlessly be in the mix for finals. Next week we’re off for a fixture further away than we travel for holidays, to take on Beaudesert. I’m looking forward to seeing all the First Graders out there supporting us given they have the week off with the bye. Patrick
Premier League Third Grade
Well after two weeks off due to Wet Weather we were raring to go and were very hopeful against Coomera at Home 😊
Grossy kindly advised he had to leave at the break, so I sent him in to WIN the Toss, but he did not ☹ and we were sent into the field.
Yet again we showed tenacity in the field ultimately restricted Coomera to 176 which on a fast outfield was a great result.
The standout bowling efforts of Jake Schultz who had bowling figures of 4 for 17 off 5.1 overs and better than that is he is always smiling.
Grossy and Ahmad got 2 wickets each and Jed and Will Marron chimed in to bowl them out in the last over. In short the fielding was brilliantly although I was struggling to deal with the barrage of knicks off the bat and deflections off the batsmen as well, tough day to be a keeper with the ball turning off the spinners ☹
We went into Bat with the real belief we had a real chance ! We got off to a really good start and at 3-73 at the 16th over thought we had our first win. It was eventually not to be, we lost 2 quick wickets (albeit one questionable) and at drinks were 5-83 with work to do and missing Wolfe / Grossy and Rudd our batting line up was a little short. We then lost the lats 4 wickets for 26 runs with Nic not able to bat with a twisted ankle we ended up falling well short. Best batting performances: Angus 27, Amhad 22, then Jed, Hunza & myself on 12, which was the issue with all getting start’s, we just needed to dig in and we finished with 15 overs still to bat.
Thank you to Fahim for filling in although his wife was bit harsh claiming he can’t bat but balled well at least 😊 Also found a new talent with the ball with Ahmad unlucky not to have a couple more wickets and I have to say that not keeping for a few weeks, makes it hard the following day – just not as young as I used to be 😉
Finally, although not a Win, it was a solid performance in the field and there are good signs with the bat, am confident a WIN is not far away.

In a gripping clash at the Alberton Cricket Club, Runaway Bay Community Div 2 edged out their rivals, Alberton Community Div 2, by a mere eight runs, showcasing resilience and strategic prowess that will be remembered throughout the season. As the teams faced off in Round 9 of the CGC Community League - Division 2, both sides knew this match was pivotal in their quest for league supremacy. Runaway Bay set a challenging target after posting a total of 207 runs all out in just over 33 overs. The innings was anchored by Joshua Foenander, whose explosive batting performance yielded an impressive score of 46 runs from just 28 balls, peppered with six boundaries and two sixes. His strike rate of an astonishing 164.28 not only provided momentum but also instilled confidence within the team. Colin Wakefield contributed significantly as well with a steady knock of 43 runs off 49 balls while captain Garred Birrell added valuable support with his own contribution of 34 runs off just 33 deliveries. The bowling attack from Runaway Bay was equally commendable, particularly Michael Schumacher and Joshua Foenander who both claimed two wickets apiece. Schumacher's tight bowling helped restrict Alberton’s scoring opportunities effectively, finishing with figures of two wickets for just 26 runs across six overs. Foenander mirrored his batting success with the ball too, claiming two scalps while conceding only slightly more at an economy rate that reflected control under pressure. As Alberton took to bat, they faced early setbacks losing key wickets at crucial moments; however, they fought valiantly through Greg Askew's resilient innings which saw him reach a notable score before being dismissed for a significant partnership that kept them afloat until later stages. Despite their best efforts and reaching a respectable total of six wickets down for 199 runs in their allotted overs, they ultimately fell short against Runaway Bay’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding prowess. The match encapsulated not just individual brilliance but also showcased how effective teamwork can lead to victory even when challenges arise on the field. With this win under their belts, Runaway Bay solidifies its standing within the league while instilling a sense of determination as they look ahead to future matches.
This week, we travelled to Bruce Small to compete against Surfers Paradise. After winning the toss, we opted to bat first. The batting innings commenced with the McQueens, Geoff and Noah. Geoff started strong, hitting boundaries within the first over. Conversely, Noah was less fortunate, losing his wicket just two balls into his innings. This brought Will Altas to the crease earlier than anticipated; however, he was dismissed by an exceptional catch on the boundary. Captain Chris Shultz walked out, building a 56-run partnership with Geoff, with boundaries frequently occurring. This ended when Geoff was run out. Geoff scored 47 off 27 balls, including three 6s and five 4s. At this point, the score was 3/75, and the team was content with their progress. Arran Canning then came to bat but was dismissed for 2. Next in was Geoff Watson, who made 9 before being stumped. After losing a couple of quick wickets, new recruit Jake Leaver came to the crease. Jake formed a 48-run partnership with Chris, steadily rotating the strike. This partnership ended when Chris was given out stumped on 94 from 58 balls. His innings included four 6s and ten 4s. At this stage, our score was 6 for 169, slightly behind in the game on small ground. James Keith then joined the crease and contributed a commendable 22 runs, including multiple boundaries, before being dismissed lbw. Flynn followed with a score of 12 before being caught out. Jake, on the other hand, remained steadfast at the crease, effectively rotating the strike until he was run out on 24—a notable performance on his debut. In the final overs, AJ and Hamish were at the crease, both adding valuable runs. AJ remained unbeaten on 10, while Hamish concluded with 17 not out from 10 deliveries, which included an impressive six that could have cleared the boundary at the MCG. We batted through our allotted 36 overs and set a total of 254—a commendable team effort. We understood that winning required us to bowl accurately to our field settings and seize our opportunities. We commenced the bowling with Geoff W and Arran, who maintained a relatively tight line but were unable to achieve an initial breakthrough. As the opening partnership began to strengthen, Chris decided to take on the responsibility of bowling himself, aiming for one or two wickets. Chris accomplished this, securing a caught and bowled shortly thereafter. Noah and Will took charge of the middle overs with the objective of maintaining tight control. Both bowled exceptionally well; Noah, despite not taking a wicket, conceded only 28 runs in his 6 overs. Will secured a critical wicket, ending his spell with figures of 1/46 from 6 overs. AJ was brought into the attack to seek another breakthrough, successfully achieving it by inducing an edge which Flynn comfortably caught behind the stumps. Subsequently, Jake Leaver partnered with AJ. Jake delivered a commendable bowling performance, taking a wicket while conceding just 5 runs in his 2 overs. The match was progressing intensely, with Surfers maintaining their required run rate. Chris resumed bowling the final overs alongside AJ. Chris claimed a couple more wickets, dismissing the new batters; however, the century maker from Surfer’s Paradise remained at the crease as their primary threat. With 2 overs remaining, Surfer’s required 20 runs for victory. The set batter capitalised on the small leg side boundary, scoring 17 runs off the over. The match was now down to the last over, with Surfer's needing just 3 runs to secure a win. We maintained a positive outlook, though we faced significant odds. Chis bowled the final over, with fielders positioned close-in, forcing the opponents to hit over them. The centurion on strike managed a single after an unsuccessful swing. Chippa then delivered two dot balls, leaving the equation at 2 runs needed from 3 balls. On the next delivery, the ball was directed at the batter’s toes, who tried to hit it straight but failed to get underneath it sufficiently, resulting in a caught and bowled. Our field remained tight to prevent singles, challenging the new batter to clear the infield. Under pressure, Chris delivered another dot ball. With 2 runs required from the final ball to win, or 1 to tie, Chippa executed another precise delivery. The batter managed only a bottom edge, which went through to our keeper Flynn, who promptly threw down the stumps, catching the batter out of the crease. Our team experienced immense elation. This was the closest match I have ever participated in. Chris stood out with a remarkable performance, scoring 94 runs, taking 5 wickets for 20 runs, and securing 4 catches. However, several other players also delivered season-high performances. We are now eagerly anticipating our next game against Coomera. Cheers, Noah

Won the toss and we batted first. After 2 weeks off it was good to get out on the paddock again and that’s exactly what we were playing on with the grass about 4 to 5 inches long. We got off to a solid start with myself and Jamie managing to get to 0/74 at the half way mark. Our opening stand ended at 102 with Jamie getting run out for 18. Rob got 10 and then l got out for 97 and the score was 3/139 from 31 overs. James managed to get run out strolling down to the non strikers end thinking that the ball was not going to his end. Jason got out on the last ball and we finished on 6/173.
We opened up with Jason and Matt and unfortunately a few chances went down early which cost us in the end . A change after 6 overs saw Tony Rowe get the first wicket at 61. Rob picked up 2 wickets and at the half way mark they were 3/93. Kaleb and Deepak kept the pressure on and picked up 2 wickets each and the score was 7/135 off 27 overs. Jason came back on and picked up a wicket followed by a run out had them 9/161 off 32 overs. Unfortunately luck did not go our way with a few balls just missing the stumps and a few edges just going wide and the final runs came from a ball just going over my hands in the 35 over. A great effort against the undefeated top side. Bowling figures were
Deepak 2/25 from 6
Kaeleb 2/32 from 6
Rob 2/32 from 6
