Three's get the Win

Premier League First Grade

We headed down to surfers after our 2 week break to start off the 2 dayer campaign. Coming in high on confidence after a good win before the bye.

We were sent in on what looked to be a very good wicket and we started off quite well with Ben and Slayter looking solid. Ben however thought it was a great idea to leave one which cartwheeled his off stump haha. None the less was a decent opening stand. We were going along ok but then a controversial dismissal caused the start of a mini collapse and we were 6/39 before we knew it which was not ideal. Freddie and Slayter stuck it out and stopped the rot and put a much needed partnership together before both Slayter and Freddie fell close together and we were in a pretty crappy situation.

However that brought Nathan and Ben canning to the crease and these 2 batted beautifully together which provided us a score to defend. James Munro batted bravely with Ben canning at the end to get us to a defendable total of 166 which wasn’t ideal but we were confident with defending.

Unfortunately we started off with a couple of dropped catches which seems to be our thing but stuck at it and had them about 2/80 overnight.

We came back on Sunday fired up knowing that the pitch was still offering a bit for the bowlers but we had to take our chances but again we missed a trick dropping a couple of early catches.

Freddie just kept charging in and got the rewards he deserved but the moment that shifted the momentum was an absolute screamer taken by Nathan at deep square that gave the boys the boost that we needed.

We kept the pressure on and had them 8 down with surfers needing only 3 runs to claim the first innings. We bowled the best we have bowled all year and the fielding was exceptional which means we know we can do it but just needs to be done at this level at all times with no lapses. We bowled about 6 maidens before they got a lucky edge through the slip to win first innings. However the boys weren’t laying down there conceding defeat all coming together after a wicket saying we can still get a reverse outright here.

We bowled them out quickly with surfers only leading by 11 runs. The boys hurting after letting first innings slip were confident of putting on some quick runs to put surfers back in. We felt we had the momentum even though we lost first innings. We decided to open with Ben and Freddie to try and put them on the back foot early and get off to a flyer which we did.  We lost Ben on 18 caught behind which brought Slayter to the crease and he left off we he finished in the first innings looking very comfortable and scoring with ease.

Freddie then lost his wicket and Josh fell not far behind but Slayter and rooster put on a quick partnership of around 80 which put us in a position to potentially make a game of it thinking we could win. Rooster fell then Slayter but matty got and Nathan kept the runs ticking over where we eventually declared at 6/161 giving them a run chase of 151 off 18 overs. We thought we were in with a big chance. They started quite quick which was expected but we managed a couple of wickets which really started putting the pressure on. However again our fielding let us down and dropping 3 catches off the fella that won the game for them isn’t how we wished it to go.

Although we lost and we know what we need to improve on, I was extremely proud of all the boys in the team for not only the huge effort against a very good team but the attitude that we play to win and we give ourselves every chance. There’s not many teams that wanna play like that and I’m proud to be apart of this.

Heads up boys. We know what we need to do so let’s work on it and finish the year off strong.

Player of the match went to Freddie Fowler.

 Let’s go boys 💪

Premier League Second Grade

Another week and another round of Saturday, Sunday 2-day cricket. Thanks Gold Coast Cricket! The only solace on offer for the Bay 2s was that round 15 of the season saw us at home yet again. With conditions just about perfect for cricket and the Loxton oval looking a picture, all signs pointed to batting first and hitting up a big total should we win the toss. Sadly, we did win the toss and sadly I elected to bowl. Now, now hear me out, there was some thought behind that call. Having been dismissed for 25 and 63 the last two times we batted first at home in 2-dayers, the team felt that we simply had to try something different. Through gritted teeth and already wincing in pain, mouthed ‘bowl?’ as the coin came down as tails…

Seeing Chris Swan (yes, that Chris Swan) striding out to a runway-style pitch to open the batting did not particularly help the mood. That being said, we were committed to the plan and planned on committing. Hayden Kyle (0/17 from 6) took the ball from the southern end an found a good rhythm early. Stevie Watson (2/30 from 8) who is rapidly making the northern end of Loxton oval his own, partnered with Hayden and bowled well early without luck. A few raps on the pads and a stumping given not out didn’t help our cause as the score moved past 50 without loss. A brief slowing of the scoring rate was capped off by Stevie claiming the opener and the first drop batters with only four runs between the two as the score moved to 2 for 62. Drinks came and went but just as the Surfers boys moved towards 150, T Harker (4/64 from 25.4 overs) got in on the action claiming the all important scalp of Swan for a worrying 87(104). Cam Davies and Travis really deserve a bit shout out here. As the two dried up the scoring, they also picked up steady wickets which saw the Surfers score move from 5-193 to see the away side dismissed for just 226. A truly Herculean effort from everyone’s favourite educator, saw Mr Davies return the figures of 19 overs, 5 maidens, 4 for 62. An outstanding effort given the flatness of the pitch, sticky conditions and the way Cam managed to maintain his pace.

With 7 overs left in the day, we sought to maintain wickets in order to try chase down Surfers’ total on day 2. Unfortunately, Krish (0 from 2) went early and just on the stroke of stumps, Jed Sessarago was adjudged caught behind (we think), off the bottom of his pad to leave the Bay 2s at 2-13 overnight.

Day two offered an opportunity for us to show some real grit to stave off yet another home defeat. Stevie Watson who had been on night-watchmen duties the previous evening, was the first to fall when he was caught off the bowling of the Surfers spinner. A flurry of wickets then fell to see the score move from 3 for 18, 4 for 18, 5 for 33, 6 for 34, 7 for 37 , 8 for 37. A monster twenty run partnership between Varun and Matt Baker looked to put us back on track until Baker too was caught. With the final wicket, the innings concluded with a meagre 57 runs on the board and another very real chance of sustaining an outright loss. A tidy 15(31) from Yuvi was the highlight of the innings.

Sadly for us, the Surfers bowlers were relentless in the second innings. It has been said that perhaps 40% of the umpiring decisions were dubious however would it have changed the result? A dismal second innings of 33 all out was all the Bay 2s could muster in the second innings. A lone vigil of 63 balls for his 12 runs from Mitch McPhee was the only positive to take out of this one.

There’s not too much more to dwell on here I don’t reckon fellas. But 3 losses from 3 matches in the 2-dayers doesn’t read too well. We move forward Helensvale away from home next week.

Premier League Third Grade

We did it!!

Got our first victory for the season vs Alberton at Alberton.

Got put in to bat on what turned out to be a slow, nearly dead pitch and a very slow outfield.

Hamad chose to cross bat the first ball of the innings which kept low, and he got himself caught. Oops. Amir snicked off in the second over after blasting one down the ground - 2/5

John Deitz & Varun Sharma dug us out of a hole and took their time compiling a partnership of 36 with Varun out for 25.

Angus Richardson and Deitzy knuckled down with the Alberton bowlers using the pitch wisely bowling full and straight. Combined with the slow outfield runs were difficult to come by, but they didn't chuck their wickets away and built a valuable 65 run partnership to get us over 100 with 8 overs to go and wickets in hand. Gus got more confident as his innings progressed and finished up with 36 hard fought runs. Deitzy was our innings anchor, utilising his experience to guts out 30 off 102 balls. It really held our innings together as we could have easily crumbled to 60 all out.

We knew if we could manage 150 we could defend it, so we elevated Will Marron and he batted perfectly for the situation, 29 of 16 balls including 2 big 6s. The lower order bats came and went quickly but aggressively, contributing the extra 20 runs to finish us at 9/156. This felt like 200.

Our aim bowling was to mirror Alberton's stump to stump line and with the added benefit of youth and energy.

Hayden Gill and Jake Schultz opened the bowling and they both nailed their instructions, allowing only 2/over for the 1st 10 overs. Our 1st change bowlers struggled to maintain the pressure, but to Will Secombe's credit after 3 inconsistent and rusty overs he found his range and picked up 2/33 off his 7 overs. I came on to tie down an end with my meds and was happy to cut one back through the gate on my 1st ball. Not much happened for the rest of my spell, 6 overs 1/7.

At the other end I decided to give Will Marron the pill and told him not to try to bowl too fast, let the pitch do the work for you. At that stage Alberton required a run a ball to win and Will's earlier spells this year had been erratic.

No need to worry, Will bowled a great off stump corridor and continuously troubled the batsmen. At the other end Jake Schultz was brought back but one of their sloggers seemed to like him so we had to change the matchup. Jake finished with 7 overs 0/23, but his figures took a hit in his last over - well bowled mate.

Hayden Gill was reintroduced and he bowled exceptionally when Alberton were chasing runs. His last 2 balls were right in the block-hole and he finished with a peach of a yorker to knock over off stump. 7 overs 2/15! He's really turned a corner.

Will rolled through the middle lower order and deservedly finished with a 5fer! 5/12 off 4.2 including the winning wicket, which along with his quick 29 earned him a clear player of the match.

As Sean spoke so well about post-match, this victory was on the back of a couple of hard fought losses showing that the effort pays off if we hang in matches and compete all the way.

Great work 3s! Made for a very enjoyable captain's birthday 😉

Community League Division 2

5th Grade

We welcomed Bonogin to Sam Loxton 3 with close to our best side for the season. Bizza lost the toss & we were asked to field first. Apart from Schuey, it was our best bowling line up, so we were after a quick kill & when the new bloke, Snitty broke through early with one of his classic in swingers, I think we all thought, this wouldnt take long! But, we were all wrong & to Bonogin’s credit, they kept us out there for the full 36 overs, with us only managing to capture another 3 of their wickets. Biz through the ball to almost everyone, using 9 bowlers, in an attempt to intice them into playing some shots, but they were determined not to get bowled out. Fridge ended up with 1/14 from his 6, with the other wicket takers being Snitty 1/31, Dr. Quinne 1/28 & Conan 1/6. Their yawn fest finished with 158 from their 36 overs. Our turn with the willow, in what should’ve been an easy kill, but Bizza decided to flirt with our form & change the batting order around. We opened with Josh Foe & some old bloke, getting off to a flyer with 11 off the first but it quickly turned to poo after that, at one stage we were 4/77 before the other fossil, Col, steadied the ship to get us over the line 7 down with 10 overs to spare. We potentially had our best line up but produced our worst performance, but still managed the W. Best with the willow was Col finishing 55 no, the old bloke 29 & Nate foe with 21. This week we play a home game up north, close to Cairns, against Burleigh. Let’s hope for a better performance than last time.

Cheers, Jamie Hunt.

6th Grade Navy

6th Grade Navy vs Broadbeach This week we were up against the formidable Broadbeach with Pommy Les and Backwards Cam. The team has lost one game in the last two seasons. Schultzy won the toss and elected to bat. This week we opened with Watto and Lachy. Lachy gone for a golden with a leading edge to square leg. Will joined Geoff in the centre and they put on a steady partnership until Will lost his wicket for a well made 21. Schultzy made a quick fire 13 before he was bowled. Enter Jimmy suited up in his whites. He put on a good partnership with Geoff taking the score to 60 before Watto fell. The Cannings came and went without troubling the scorers. Dad -aka ‘Dale Rachow’ finally got his chance to shine and shine he did- taking the score to 96 with Jimmy, until Jimmy fell for a well made 20. It was time for the Father and Son combo ( Dale and Harry) to put on a partnership. Due to dodgy hamstrings, Dale needed a runner. Schultzy put up his hand to take on the job, the team let out a collective gasp, all with one thought in our mind….‘don’t run out Harry’. Our worst fear came true, it wasn’t long until young Harry was back in the pavilion- run out , by the one and only Schultzy! The boys put on a couple more runs, with Dale making an impressive 22, in his first batting performance in 20 years - albeit not being able to walk. Noah came and went and Lightning McQueen ended up 2 not out. We finished on 113, not bad given the last few times we played Broadbeach , we didn’t get over 70. It was our turn to bowl. Schultzy and Harry opened the bowling. Schultzy took the first wicket with a great caught and bowled, getting one to pop off the syntho. Broadbeach got to 35 before the lost another wicket with Will bowling their other opener. Schultzy stuck again - Broadbeach 3/59. Cameron came to the crease with the intent of launching every ball for 6. He got a few away until Schultzy caught one in the deep of the bowling of Will. At 4-78 we were in with a chance. Hamish came in to bowl and had a great spell, probably the best this season . He struck next with the perfect leg spinner and a screamer of a catch by Lachy in first slip. Unfortunately, that was the end of the road for the Bay and Broadbeach got the winning runs in the 21 over. We may not have won, but we sure made Broadbeach work hard for the win! Some real highlights from the team this week, with Will continuing his form with bat and ball, good fielding all-round and Hamish back to his best with the ball. Cheers Arran

Community League Division 3

6th Grade Orange

6ths Orange.

This week we took on Helensvale Green without our spiritual leader and regular Captain. I was asked early in the week to guide the ship and thought I would add some community, which confused a couple as we swapped out the captaincy depending on the situation. Pretty sure it ended with Bob in the 32nd over which he may or may not have chosen to bowl himself and let them hit the winning runs from a misfield from the previous captain of the 31st over. However the original chosen captain (me) won the toss and batted! Off to a great start with Jamie Phillips and Deepak Subramanya finding the boundary on regular occasions. Sixpak got himself runout for 23, Jamie ended his innings on 38 from 44 with 7 boundaries but was trapped by a full ball LBW. Tony Robertson and Greg Ryan came and went before we reach the 100. Jason Hay steadied the ship with a little cameo from debutant Aiden Georgoulas playing his first senior game and Bob Menzies. Jason Brought up his 50 with a six over cow corner before being bowled the very next ball for 55 from 50 with 9 boundaries. The next few came and went and with 2 overs left I joined Rory (king) Soloman in the middle. Looking down from the strikers end I could see the gleam in the kings eye ( may have been wearing glasses) so I turned over the strike to a man on a mission ending with 10 from 10 including a magnificent 6 over long on, beautiful to watch. 36 overs 9/183 with everyone in the community playing a role.

Out to bowl with a decent total to defend we started with Ying & Yang, the seasoned veteran Rory at one end and the young firebrand at the other. The master showed his skill at one end picking up 2 wickets in succession but unable to snag the hattrick. All the while it was raw pace from the youngster at the other end causing indecision from the batsman and the BBQ was on, runout! 3/20  and we were looking good, bowling change came and I got whacked a couple of times before picking up the 4th wicket, 4/68. They then went on to put on a 90 plus run partnership together with Bob and Kaeleb getting the dangermen but it was all to late.

Rory, 6 overs, 3 maidens 2 for 10 was clearly the pick of the bowlers.

Aidan Georgoulas, 6 overs, 1 maiden 0 for 32 on debut was unlucky with a catch going down late that could have seen him get his first senior wicket, Not sure who dropped it, can’t seem to remember, must be getting old. (ME) Sorry mate.

However Aiden did get his name in the scorebook taking a great catch and left the ground with the game ball to remember his senior debut. We hope to see a lot more of this young man in the seniors.

Matt.
