Senior Match Reports Week 14/10/2024
Premier League First Grade
We all arrived at the home of the seagulls prepared and ready to take on a strong surfers outfit. We lost the toss and surfers decided they would like to have a bat. We opened the bowling with Stevey Watson and Ben canning and they bowled reasonably well with stevey boy having an early chance dropped. Surfers continued on with a fast start and after a few bowling changes we just couldn’t get the breakthrough we were looking for. Drinks came and we had a plan reset and a bit of a rev up and the boys responded. Bangers bowling beautifully for his spell taking a couple of wickets, one of those wickets with an absolute specky of a catch off his own bowling. Just ask him and he will be kind enough to show you the video and run you through with commentary 🤣🤣.
So after a very tough first 20 we actually ended up taking 9-120 odd off our second 20 which was a step in the right direction.
Now we knew it was going to be a tough run chase but we had a goal to just try and take it as deep as possible. We started off with Benny and slats and their opening bowlers bowled a very good opening powerplay which made it hard for us to score. Unfortunately we then had a bit of a collapse with some poor shot selections from several batsmen which put us in a very tight position and looking to just try to bat out our overs to gain some much needed experience for our younger players. Unfortunately we tried our best but we just couldn’t hold our own.We all know what we need to work on and all understand that this is below the standard we expect of ourselves. We have addressed this post game and are super excited to push on and become better for a club, our teammates and most importantly become a better person. Onwards and upwards from here guys and I have no doubt we can seriously surprise some teams when we get it right.

Premier League Second Grade
‘I will cook for myself. I can boil and egg. I have seen it done!” (Winston Churchill).
Round 2 of the 24/25 Season saw the Bay 2’s facing Surfers away from home on a windy Spring day. With a crumbling deck and an outfield that looked more like a beach than a cricket field due to the AFL offseason flocculation, I promptly lost the toss and we were sent in to field. Sporting a tidy haircut and a couple of earnings that would make even Usher jealous, Hayden Kyle (0/31 from 8) took up the new ball with a stiff northerly at his back. Nayeef Biswas (2/22 from 8) took up the new pill from the other end as the pair worked into a good opening partnership with the ball. While the glare from the Hayden’s new ear-shrapnel put the Surfers batsmen off and kept the scoring down, Nayeef picked up his first wicket for the bay when one was sliced to gully for Lucas to drop and then catch three times. The following spells from debutants James Munro and Jamie Lennix (0/33 from 7) kept the score in check.
A slow first session saw Surfers reach drinks at 2 for 60odd but after the break they came out firing with some more expansive stroke play. We needed wickets. Enter Cam Davies. Sadly for Cam he didn’t bowl a single maiden, but he did take wickets at regular intervals and made it hard for the opposition to get away as he returned the outstanding figures of 4 for 37 (7). James Munro also claimed his first 2nd grade wicket as he returned figures of 1/26 (7). Perhaps because of a lack of hunger from the ring fielders and my 7-10 missed runouts Surfers finished their 20 overs somehow with 174 runs.
It must be said that in the last three seasons, I haven’t played a game at Cambio Oval that hasn’t been rain effected and at 3pm the BOM was suggesting that this match would be no different. With both of our openers from last week unavailable, I decided that I’d probably be best placed at square leg umpire, so I’d get my batting stint out of the way early. Partnered by another 2nd Grade debutant Varun Sharma, I waddled out to the crease. Varun smashed a 4 in the first over to greet the young offfie who had picked up Harry Maher the previous week. True to my word, I snicked off in the second over to make sure I would make the second square leg stint.
Now, for those who had glanced at our scorecard from the second innings - no, no there was no mistake. Play HQ had not buggered up. But in my defence there was a reason for Hayden Kyle’s promotion from number 13 in the order to first drop. Unfortunately for us, humanity and the game of cricket itself, Hayden had a pre-organised pedicure or something and had to leave early. While Hayden’s rapid-fire 2(8) ensured that he made his appointment in time, it saw us slump to 2/13. Jamie Lennix replaced Hayden at the crease and looked really solid until every muscle in both of his legs gave up on him and he was forced to run between the wickets with a gate that only the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz could replicate. Varun meanwhile, with mannerisms somewhere between Marnus and Michaelia Cash, continued on his merry way. Being sure to regularly scream ‘No run!’, after missing deliveries and remaining completely ignorant to the sub-par sledges from the opposition Varun was in search red ink (27* from 67). When Jamie fell and with the score just under 40, Lucas Frazer who was in search of an average, strode to the crease with an over to go before drinks. With the clouds looming and the light dimming, Lucas and Varun made it to drinks with us at 3/46. “Bugger. 20 overs constitute a match!”
Sure enough, first the lightning then the rain came, but not before the umpire forced us out for two overs and granted Lucas his wish of having an average by adjudging him LBW from a delivery that struck Lucas on his fourth rib. Seeing that Lucas was less than pleased with the decision, the umpire decided to really rub salt into the wound, by declaring the conditions un-safe due to light and lightning no sooner than Lucas had made it off the field.
A strange old game that one fellas. A remarkable improvement with the ball was sadly undermined by a lack of hunger by fielders in the ring. We realistically should have kept these guys under 150 which was a total we might have been on track to chase down before the delays. We look forward to our first home game next week at Loxton.
Patrick.
Premier League Third Grade
We won the toss vs Helensvale at Loxton 2 and I chose to bowl due to the fact that 3 of our 11 had to depart at 4pm.We fielded a vastly different squad from Rd 1. Co-captain Sean Sandford made his season debut, and big thanks to Colin Wakefield, Fahim Tonmoy, Billy Walker and Tim Murdoch for filling in, plus Flynn Richardson from jnrs fielding for us till sleepy head Hamza arrived. Our initial focus was to start less erratically and grab early wickets which we achieved. Except for a couple of spilled catches and big Ben Daley hitting a quick 46 off 38, our 1st session was excellent. At drinks Helensvale were 6/92 off 20 overs
Aside from Daley - 5/46 off 13.4 overs
Nick McConnell 3/35 off 5 overs including a great 1 handed catch from Sean wicket keepingAndrew Gross 2/32 off 6 oversWill Secombe 0/17 off 4 overs highlighted by bowling 5 dot balls in a row to Daley, which resulted in him getting out to Billy the next ball he faced.
Great partnership bowling!!
The 2nd session started positively with Billy Walker continuing to bowl very tidily with a good field setting and finished with 2/14 off 7.5 including the last wicket. At one stage Helensvale were 8/125, but a combination of good lower order batting, dropped chances and inaccurate bowling let them get to 219.Improved rhythm from Hayden Gill who should've had a couple of scalps and Jed Sessarago landing more in the right spot were takeaways.Once again we were let down by our extras - 4nb, 14w...3 extra overs and 18 free runs. Must tidy this up!
We will be more ruthless in the future.
The batting innings started well with Tim Murdoch and Jed Sessarago opening to some handy bowlers who were getting it to pop off a length. Hopefully our bowling unit can learn from that and realise that consistent length is crucial.Very pleased that both openers played the situation on its merits and got through the tough 1st 10 overs, then increasing the tempo against the change bowlers, putting on 45 for the 1st wicket.
Tim had a places to be so started hitting out and fell for 32/50.Billy walker came in and hit a couple of nice boundaries before being robbed of 4 runs and his wicket by a very sharp catch by the Vale captain at cover.Jed unfortunately got out skying a chased wide down leg for 12/42 but looks very solid at opener.Fahim came in, hit one to cover and ran himself out, then Colin and Hamza batted through till the lightning came when we on 4/93 off 23.4 overs. We lost on Duckworth-Lewis however, we weren't too far off winning. With a bit of polish and driving home our advantage when we're on top we'll be in the winner's circle soon.Next week we host the bottom team, Alberton and this is a must win game that will set up our season.

We rolled up to Dux oval with 9 players until the skipper decided a 3 year old birthday party was more appealing so he took off leaving us with 8. I had one job, which was to win the toss & bat, but stuffed that up & we were asked to bowl first. We opened with the old stager Schuey but when he was hit to all parts of the ground in his first over by the opposition skipper, he was replaced by Conan (the destroyer) Dunning. New youngster Josh (Speedy) Foenander opened at the other end & immediately made his presence felt with a fiery 6 over spell capturing 3/18 in his first outing for the Bay. Conan replaced Schuey & removed their big hitting skipper with his 2nd ball & finished with 2/16 from his 6 overs. Duane (The Rock Johnson) was next with the ball capturing a wicket with his 1st ball & ended up with figures of 3/22 from his 6 & young Nate (Mr Cool) Foenander, bowling with his aviator sunnies, captured a tidy 1/9 at the end. Schuey came back after a 1 over spell to finish with a tidy 0/11 from his last 5 overs. New (old) keeper, Gary McCoy did an outstanding job behind the stumps regularly seen horizontal through the air stopping plenty of byes also taking the first catch of the day & his first for 18 years. Queens all out for 110. Our turn with the bat, I decided to open with Conan & the oldest of the Foenander triplets in Andy. They decided to be greedy & almost get the runs themselves before our Helensvale recruit Critto decided he’d seen enough of Andy & gave him out lbw (missing by a mile apparently). Andy made a handy 33 while Conan (I can do it all) Dunning ended the day 57no. We passed their score 2 down in the 17th over. Critto redeemed himslf after his terrible umpiring stint by bringing the bbq & snags & fed us all. Signing of until next week, where hopefully we have at least 9 players!! Jamie Hunt
Welcome back to the Bay die hard cricketers! We didn't quite have the start to the season we wanted when I lost the toss and Bonogin chose to bat. I'll work on that for next week! We had no idea what to expect out of our young side who now had a season of senior cricket under their belt so I decided to open the bowling for season 24/25 with our junior off spinner Noah (1/15 off 4) and the experience of Geoff Watson (1/6 off 6) at the other end. These guys combined perfectly to get us off to a solid start with Noah's wicket coming from a beautiful full toss clipping the bails..... We kept them to 2/55 at 1st drinks (12). The Arran (2/27 off 5) and Hamish (0/26 off 6) Canning duo then Jake (0/16 off 4) and Will (0/11 off 3) made things more difficult for the opposition limiting their scoring opportunities and going into second drinks having them at 4/110 (24). I came on to close the innings (1/19 off 6) with Jake taking a screamer to end the innings of the only Bonogin player with a notable score of 53. At the end of the innings we thought we were in with a show, restricting them to 147. Unsurprisingly, everyone proceeded to request to open the batting. But with this game within our sights we decided to hit them with all the Geoff we had. Geoff Watson (26) and Geoff McQueen (51) got us off to a solid start to some extremely difficult swing bowling. The Geoffinators got us to 1st drinks unscathed for 40. Being a touch under the run rate required I politely asked our Geoff's to slowly increase the run rate to which big Geoff "Farmer" McQueen took that as go to town on them, smashing fours and a monster 6 at will but taking a sensible single on the last ball of each over to farm the strike. Watto finally went and we were 1/80. The best opening stand our side has had! I came and went for 6 (in doing so getting the lowest score of the day and winning the honour of writing the match report) and Will made a handy run a ball 13 with Arran 9. Jake and James got us through to 2nd drinks at 5/121 when the game was called off due to lightning. Game 1 of the year down with a destructive win under DLS to fill us all with confidence for the season to come.
6th Grade Orange
On a fine sunny day the 6th Grade Orange side under the Captaincy of Gentleman Jim travelled to a previously unknown oval in the middle of nowhere. The team was comprised of a bunch of misfits thrown together at the last minute due to shortages and grew from 7 players to 11 and back down to 10 prior to the start of the game. Jim won the toss and elected to bat opening with Tony Rowe (11) and Rob Laing (70) who were both debutants to 6th grade. Jim Phillips (53) then came and had a very good partnership with Rob. Toward the end when the chase for quick runs were on the wickets fell quickly and we ended the innings at 7/175. Highlights of the innings apart from the scores of Rob and Jim came from a couple of debutants.
Karan Bhalla (10) commenced his career at RBCC by walking out at the fall of a wicket without his bat only to be reminded of the need for a bat by the outgoing batsman. Jason Hay also another debutant whilst batting took up his stance at the under 10 line before realising that he was in fact 3 metres outside his crease. That said we were happy enough with the score we had and set about bowling.
We opened the bowling with Matt Edwards (2-29 off 4) and Jason Hay (2-22 off 6) with the CHICC batsmen complaining about Jason being in that grade as he may have been a touch quick for them. There were no complaints heard about the bowling speed of Matt. Tony Rowe followed (3-20 off 4) and preceded to bamboozle the batsmen with a collection of deliveries. He was heard to say to the batsman, “You can’t hit every ball for 4” which clearly the batsman took note of as he hit the next ball for 6 which ended up in an adjoining suburb. Rob Laing (1-13 off 4) also bowled along with Deepak Subramanya (1-6 off 2) and Kaeleb Edwards (1-7 off 2.1). We managed to bowl them out for 98 giving us a good win against a team expected to feature in the end of season games.
