Ambivalence: the state of having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone.
Day 1
A glorious day and a positive weather forecast for the whole weekend greeted the Bay 2s upon arrival at Sam Loxton oval as we sought to take on Broadbeach in a Saturday, Sunday fixture to kick off the two dayers for the season (thanks Gold Coast Cricket).
With a hard grassy deck and a perfectly manicured outfield, the writing was on the wall. Bat first and bat big. Sadly, I injured myself tossing the coin, which saw me ruled out for the entire match. However, I did win said toss and decided to bat. ‘You beauty’… Or so I thought.
At this point I think it’s important to acknowledge our bowling performance in the second innings of the match. Nayeef Biswas was once again the standout taking 6/76(19.5). ‘Woohoo, free beers!’ Nayeef was well supported by Stevie Watson who overcame the second spell yipps and picked up 3/28 (10). Jamie Lennix claimed up his first wicket for the club as he went on to return figures of 1/23(4) but outside that, there wasn’t too much to write home about. We had dismissed a pretty formidable Broady side for 219 which would have put us in a good place to pick up some points… That is, excepting the fact that we had been dismissed for just 25 (yes twenty-five) runs in our first innings.
The Broadbeach bowlers were all over us in our first innings. Their lines un-erring and with their lengths keeping us on the back foot, our batting lineup really had no response. It was a hard pill to swallow to have lost on first innings by the end of the fist day. That being said, day 2 presented the opportunity to show some fight.
Day 2
Much like Saturday, the conditions at Sam Loxton oval were pristine again on the second day. Cam Davies who had finished not out in the first innings paired up with Varun Sharma to kick off our defence against a likely outright loss. Sadly there weren’t many starts in the top 6 with the exception of Matt Baker who looked very solid for his 18(42). Once again the Broady opening bowlers ripped through us and we really had no response. It wasn’t until the Stevie Watson and James Munro came together to put on a fantastic last wicket partnership that we were able to look on the bright side a little. The pair put on 66 for the last wicket and really showed some grit! In a partnership with nothing but pride on the line, Stevie’s patience was perfectly balanced by James’ power and aggression. After withstanding a bumper barrage, Stevie finished with 20*(86). James bludgeoned 7 boundaries on his way to earning our knock of the game with 46(53), before he holed out to seal our fate.
That was a pretty demoralising loss fellas. I’ve been a part of some sizable spankings during my time with the club but that one was pretty painful. Stevie and James demonstrated that if the top order can get through the tough period against the new ball, the runs will eventually begin to flow. We really needed the conditions in which Stevie and James batted, to be afforded to numbers 3,4 and 5. That being said, we get as many points for losing by one run as we do losing outright so there really is no point dwelling on this one much longer. Remember the feeling of that pain, remember the hurt, but lets use it boys. It’s back on each and every one of us to do something about it and step up next week against Burleigh.
Patrick.
Premier League Third Grade
We had our home game vs Broadie moved to Southport due to...reasons...
I won the toss and batted on a fine day with a fast looking outfield aiming for runs a plenty.
Hamad Ahmad and Jed Sessarago opened and were settling in nicely until Hamad was on the receiving end of some unusual umpiring.
After getting hit halfway up the thigh pad, the umpire carefully watched the keeper dive to attempt the catch - which he didn't.
The umpire then raised his finger which begs the question, if the umpire thought he hit the ball it can't be out lbw?? I was told a catch would've taken precedence as a mode of dismissal, that's why he waited to see if it was caught. Confusing.
Broadie bowled tightly and fielded well. Once again Jed held strong at one end until he got struck in front by a quicker one from their leg spinner for 18.
Stephen Wolf got bowled by a hand grenade, John Deitz did his hammy lunging to make a run, and the rest of us came and went too quickly.
Sean Sandford was the only one who looked comfortable in the last part of our innings and remained not out for 12.
We scored a lowly 75 😑
Defending a small total and with only 10 fielders due to John's hamstring injury, Wolfy came up with a plan to add some entertainment to our day - quick bowler rotations. Max 1-2 overs each.
In the 15.1 overs it took for Broadie to reach the target, we managed to give 7 bowlers a go.
Will Secombe took out the middle stump of their aggressive opener in his second over to extend his spell by one over, which got a fist pump and a "yesss!" out of him.
Once the spinners came on, we slowed the momentum and fielded well, so I changed the bowler rotation plan to get some overs into them. If we can get a defendable total on the board, we'll be right in games.
Fahim Tonmoy bowled 3 overs of handy off spin, including a wicket, and Nathan Rudd bowled 4 tidy overs of leggies to give him some confidence for future matches.
Now that our bowling and fielding has improved, our batting has fallen down.
I have confidence that we'll put together a complete game soon. Even though the results aren't there yet, our spirits are good, and we are sharing some laughs.

Dominant Display from Runaway Bay Secures Victory Over Mudgeeraba
Luke Northam's Unbeaten 74 Powers Runaway Bay to a Comfortable Win
In a commanding performance at the Sam Loxton Oval, Runaway Bay Community Division 2 showcased their prowess with both bat and ball, securing a convincing victory over Mudgeeraba Community Division 2 by nine wickets. The match, part of the CGC Community League Division 2, saw Runaway Bay chase down Mudgeeraba's total of 143 runs with remarkable ease. The standout performer for Runaway Bay was Luke Northam, whose unbeaten knock of 74 runs off just 63 balls included ten boundaries and two sixes. His aggressive yet controlled innings set the tone for the chase, allowing his side to maintain a steady run rate throughout. Alongside him, Colin Wakefield contributed a solid 30 runs from 32 balls, while Conan Dunning provided valuable support towards the end with an unbeaten contribution of 28 runs off just 27 deliveries. On the bowling front, Runaway Bay's attack proved equally effective. A fill-in (Chris Nilon) bowler led the charge with two wickets for only 16 runs in six overs, demonstrating exceptional control and discipline. Joshua Foenander also shone with the ball, taking two wickets for merely 14 runs in five overs, while Nathan Foenander added further pressure on the opposition with another pair of scalps at an economical rate of just over three runs per over. With this emphatic win, Runaway Bay not only showcased their depth in batting but also highlighted their bowling versatility and strength in fielding. Their ability to restrict Mudgeeraba to a modest total laid the foundation for what turned out to be a straightforward pursuit.
Winner: Runaway Bay Community Div 2

The match between Runaway Bay and Broadbeach began with the visitors (Broadbeach) winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Jake had the honour of bowling the first over, which led to him getting a second ball wicket. After his 2 over spell of pure line and length, Arron was taken off, and ‘The Toby Hudson’ was unleashed. Edge after edge, and nick after nick, Toby was wicketless for his first 3 overs, until out of nowhere, a top edge occurred, resulting in ‘Watto’ taking a ripping catch in the slips. After a dry patch from wickets, ‘Nozza’ finally broke through, getting a fine nick to the keeper, Flynn Richardson. The consistent line and length from Lachy finally led to him claiming the huge wicket of Gurdev, with Geoff Watson (Watto) taking a diving one handed screamer with his right mitt. Mister Hamish Canning repeatedly beat the edge of the bat, drawing the batter down the wicket time after time. After numerous attempts of stumpings that were missed, Hamish decided he’s gonna get this wicket by himself, dismissing an inform Mathew Edward’s with an LBW plead. For the remaining few overs, the Broadbeach batting duo began to tee off, making 106 runs off of only 12 overs. In the final over of the Broadbeach innings, ‘Watto’ bowled remarkable balls, to restrict the Broadbeach team to a sizeable 5-216. To begin the Runaway Bays batting innings out strutted Will and Flynn. After back and forth arguing Flynn had finally decided to let Will face the first ball, from a fiery Broadbeach team. Unfortunately, Will gloved the ball down the leg side, and straight into the keepers hands, resulting in the Bay being 1 for 1. Whilst on the sidelines ‘Lighting’ had one mindset, to stay in, which sadly didn’t happen, with him getting a second ball duck. Following Lightings wicket, was Toby Hudson, who scored a well fought 6 runs from 22 balls. After a solid knock of 6 off of 24 balls, Flynn was dismissed from an incredible diving caught and bowled. Ball after ball, came wicket after wicket, which saw the Bay being 7 for 25. Arron gave it all he had to try and dig Runaway Bay Navy out of a hole, however, his efforts were quickly shut down from yet another spectacular fielding effort from the bowler, resulting in him being dismissed for a well fought 7 runs. For the remainder of the batting innings, the batters at the crease decided to try and stay in, however, that wasn’t possible with the remarkable left arm offspin from the Broadbeach team, ripping through the Bays defence, resulting in the Runaway Bay Navy team being all out for a low 33 runs. To conclude the game both teams shook hands and congratulated one another on their performances, which concluded an incredible day of cricket.

6th Grade Orange
6th Grade Orange V Helensvale Green Won the toss and we had a bat. Jamie and myself opened again but Jamie went early and that brought Rob to the crease. With our combined age of 123 years we had the experience but not the youth of the opposition. Tight bowling and slow outfield held us back but when I was out the score was 2/52 from 14 overs. Rob got out for 25 and then a couple more wickets fell to have us 5/82 from 23 overs. Bob and Deepak started hitting the bowlers all around the park and had a great partnership of 76 with Bob finishing on 60 and Deepak 26. We only added another 3 runs to the total after that finishing all out for 161 with Cosmo run out off the last ball of the innings. A bit light on the bowling had Rory open with Rob. Rory had the openers in trouble from the start bowling a great spell and finishing with 2/22 from 6 overs. Tony Rowe came on and got a wicket to have us well in the game at 3/34. From there we were not able to get the breakthrough we needed and the runs just kept on coming. In the end they passed us 4 down in 27 overs so in the end it was not our day.
