Seconds wins after Jawid goes on batting rampage
Premier League First Grade
Another trek down south had us visiting the home of the bull sharks. We were welcoming our newly arrived poms for their first game of the season and due to their great bowling ability I decided to bowl after winning the toss which I soon realised was the wrong decision as the pitch was an absolute belter.
Big Nathan out import from Surrey came steaming in down wind and the reports did not lie. This boy could bowl some serious pace. After beating the bat a few times with no success his first spell after 4 overs I think went for around 30 runs which wasn’t too bad just looked like he couldn’t quite get his rhythm down.
Freddy our other import come on and bowled very well in his first spell and took a wicket. But the pick of the bowlers this week was Big Ben Canning and didn’t he bowl well bowling his 8 overs straight and finished with 3/26. Well done mate and well deserved after putting in all your hard work at training. Well fell behind the over rate pretty bad so had to get through our overs with spin and raj to catch back up as I knew we had Freddy and Nathan to come back on and after a few dropped catches and quite a bad decision from the umpire Burleighs batsmen snitch away and out on a decent partnership.
Freddy came back on at the death and clawed it back and finished with 5/27 off 8 for his first outing at the bay. Fantastic effort mate and looking forward to the remainder of the season.
So after 40 overs Burleigh ended up 9/231 a decent total but we thought good deck and fast outfield it could be achievable if we bat well.
Started off with Benny and rooster and the boys got away to a quick start but Benny tried to pull one that skidded on early and got bowled for 12.
Josh came in and knocked a few around but chipped one to square leg at the end of the power play which had us at 2/52 after 8 overs which head us ahead of the run rate. Rooster then got caught behind for 27 and then the collapse happened. Bangers stood strong through the innings and after a few quick wickets it brought the star of the day on Ben canning.
Ben and bangers batted well and showed us how to be patient and build a partnership until Benny chipped one back to the bowler after a hard fought 16.
We ended up getting bowled out for 117 with banger finishing on 24.
Back to the drawing board but again there are some really good things happening but they’re just not outweighing the bad thing atm. We are still progressing and I don’t see why we can’t go out there this weekend and really put the pressure on and get our first win.

‘Boys, you’ve either got it or you don’t’ (P. Brown 09/11/2024) ‘Jawid plays a different sport than the one the rest of us play out there’ (M. Baker 09/11/2024)
Back at home and back into the one-dayers, the Bay 2s took on the winless Burleigh at Loxton oval for round 6 of the season. Sporting a nice coverage of grass hiding what felt to be an absolute road, Burleigh won the toss and without hesitation elected to bowl. It looked to be a bad toss to have lost but luckily for us, no one told opening bowlers Stevie or Jawid that. After ambling in for the first delivery of the day Jawid (2/22 from 7) obliterated James Kirk’s stumps to send him back to board the Enterprise (1/0). Two balls later and with a loose half-tracker Jawid was in the wickets again as Burleigh’s first drop, Brain-faded a cut shot straight to the keeper (2/0). At 2 for 1, we imagined that the Burleigh batters might try to consolidate in the second over of the match. However to our surprise, we were back in business on just the third ball of Stevie’s first over as Varun took a beautiful catch with his sternum at mid-off (safe as houses), to have the opposition flailing at 3/1! Ok ok, so now consolidation? Well briefly. With a wrap on the Burleigh skipper’s front pad, Stevie (2/37 from 8) had the opposition 4/25. A solid partnership of 89 followed the early calamity at the top of the order before Jawid swallowed a not very easy catch on the mid-wicket boundary off a putrid half-tracker from Mr Davies (5/114). With the runs beginning to flow, it was time for some Biswas! As always, our trusty left-arm orthodox magician, wove his magic and cast a spell on the Burleigh batters as he went on to claim 4 for 23(8). Mr Davies chipped in with a very handy spell of 2/19 (6.3) as we dismissed Burleigh for 167 in 37.3 overs. Another great effort with the ball but we did have the sense that we probably gave the opposition 20-30 more than they deserved.
After withstanding one of my lengthy rants the previous week, Varun and Angus set out with clear intentions to see off the new ball and protect the middle order from the opening bowlers. The pair looked to be doing just that before Varun (17 from 32) fell to have us 1/27. Amir came and went without troubling the scorers. Gus missed a straight one that he made look unplayable and as Jamie Lennix joined me at the crease, we struggled through to drinks at 3/55. With a busted wrist further limiting my already narrow range of shots, I had real doubts of our victory when Jamie lolly-popped one straight back to the bowler first ball after drinks (4/55).
As Jawid marched out to the crease I was buoyed by the fact that I probably wouldn’t have to push the issue too much. Turns out that was about the only thing I was right about all day. After a very watchful few dots and a two he didn’t quite get, Jawid launched just his 5th ball straight down the ground for what Google maps suggests was about a 90m six. ‘Ooh we’re on here!’ While I buggerised around and faced out maidens, Jawid steadily went about his work. Block, Block, six, block, four, single was the formula that Jawid employed over after over as the target was rapidly whittled down.
The Burleigh players constantly assumed that hitting big equals slogging. But as sure as day becomes night, Jawid proved over and over again that his power does not come at the expense of quality stroke play as he deposited six after six after six over cover and mid-off. Needing 12 to win with 7 overs to spare and Jawid on strike, the Burleigh skipper in a brave and truly altruistic act (something I’d never do) brought himself on to shield the figures of some of the youngsters. Dot, dot, four, two, four, SIX! Game over and forget about keeping that ball for training fellas!
In an innings that finally exorcised the demons of Harry Maher’s brutality against us in the 22/23 season, Jawid slung the entire team over those enormous shoulders of his and carried the other 11 of us home with 6 overs to spare!!!! Wait a sec, weren’t we 4/55 after 20??? Yes that’s right, Jawid had us going at 8.36 RPO for 14 overs after drinks.
Finishing not out with 91*(44) featuring 8 fours and 7 monster sixes, the performance drew the highest of complements from self- proclaimed Bay legends S. McGrath, J. Austin and any others lucky enough to have seen it live. For those who didn’t catch his performance live, I encourage you all to take a look on Frogbox. Be sure to turn the volume up to 11 for the six on 04:59:50.
Wow, what a match. That one had it all fellas, early wickets, good catching, some grit and most of all power hitting. Our biggest improvement this week was in the team song which this time felt really good to belt out with all of you.
Congratulations to Jawid on a fantastic knock, two spectacular catches and two very important wickets. Let's make in 2 in 2 with a win over Coomera next week boys.
Patrick.
Premier League Third Grade
In a spirited clash at the Sam Loxton Oval, Logan Village Premier Div 3 triumphed over Runaway Bay Premier Div 3 by three wickets, showcasing their batting prowess. The match was significant as both teams aimed to solidify their standings in the CGC Premier League - Division 3. Runaway Bay struggled to find their rhythm with the bat, managing only 137 runs across their allotted overs. Andrew Gross and Colin Wakefield stood out for their side, each scoring an unbeaten 38 runs, demonstrating resilience under pressure despite the team’s overall low total. Nathan Rudd contributed a valuable innings of 25 runs, but it was clear that more partnerships were needed to set a challenging target. With the ball, Nathan Rudd shone brightly for Runaway Bay's bowling attack, claiming two wickets for just 29 runs over seven overs, maintaining an economy rate of just over four. Will Secombe provided steady support with one wicket but conceded more runs than his teammates. Despite these individual performances, Logan Village’s batting depth proved too strong. The target that set was just too many, illustrating their dominance throughout the match. While Runaway Bay faced defeat, the individual contributions from players like Gross and Wakefield highlight areas of potential growth and resilience within the squad.

Join Us for Our Spooky Halloween Party!
We rolled up to Canungra where most of the town had assembled to watch match of the day. Unfortunately, it was another one of those weeks where we had to scramble for a team as we had 6 of our regular team out including our part time skipper so it was our fill in skipper who had 1 job, to win the toss, but again failed in his duties & we found ourselves fielding first again.
A big thank you to our 4 fill ins, Macca, Brad Collett & a couple of celebrities in Greg Bird who played a game of rugby for some team & the real star, Matthew Jackson who captained Rowville footy club 10 years ago.It was evident early on that they had a couple of decent cricketers & by the end of their innings thats all they needed with 2 of their blokes contributing 150 of their 200 runs scored. Our bowlers toiled hard with Josh Foe grabbing 2 wickets, Macca 1, Birdy 1 & the Rowville flyer,Jacko, the pick of the bowlers finishing with 5/21, which pleased the Runaway Bay wags that had made the trek to Canungra. Tambo finished with 9/200, a decent score on a big slow ground.
Our chase didn’t start or finish well with only the new guys finishing with double figures, Brad Collett 26, Jacko 12 & Birdy 27, leaving us all out for 100, not a good day at the office!
This week we play our friends Broadbeach with close to our best line up so hopefully we give these a taste of the real Runaway Bay 5th grade.

6th Grade Orange V Bonogin Green Lost the toss and we bowled first. After a tough week trying to get to 11 players together, unfortunately we had 1 pull out and 1 a maybe later so we started with 9. Rory opened up and as usual bowled well and had great figures of 1/18 from 6. At 10 overs they were 1/50 and we could not get any pressure on the batters. Arron got the second wicket with the score on 63 but the runs kept on coming. And at the half way mark they were 2/91. At the 22nd over we got another player on to bring it to 10 but the batters were set and pushed on. Tony Robertson got a chance with the ball and did a great Job picking up a wicket and finishing with 1/27 from 6 overs. At the end of the innings they finished with 3/216. A tough ask and with both Tony’s gone early we were 2/36 from 9 overs. Deepak promoted to No 4 made 26 in a partnership of 46 with Jamie to get us to 3/82 from 22 overs. From there we were not able to get the runs quick enough and we finished on 6/124 with Jamie batting through the innings and finishing on 65x
