Premier League First Grade

First game back from an enjoyable Christmas break found us at home against Broadbeach. After a fantastic job from Phil and the team to get a good looking pitch up ready for the match after some horrible weather we won the toss and decided to have a bat after a delayed start. This meant we had 35 overs to bat.

Benny Houghton got us off to a flyer and batted really well for his 41 but then broady figured out the wicket and started taking pace off the ball and it became a bit more difficult to score. We had a mini collapse and that left us with Corey and matty hoy at the crease. They were batting well when another shower came through.

We ended up getting back on where Corey and matty went at 10 an over and we were looking good until we got washed out after another heavy shower.

Not a bad start to the second half of the year but a massive game this week coming up.

Let’s bring that Loxton trophy back to where it belongs.

Up the bay.

Premier League Second Grade

Sporting new haircuts, fresh faces, extra kilos an unused Christmas cricketing apparel, the Bay 2s travelled down to Broadbeach to re-commence the season after it’s half time/holiday period. The side was eager to welcome two debutants, Yuvraj and Krish to the club by snaring a big win. A bunch of rain around would likely see the Broady deck having even more spice in it than usual. With that in mind, we won the toss and I elected to have a bowl in the hope that our quicks could extract a bit of lateral movement from the deck. Wrong!

It was hard to tell if Hayden Kyle (0-33 from 5) was trying to get his money’s worth out of his fees, or just super keen to get his steps up for the week, as he delivered a 9 ball over from the northern end to commence proceedings. Likewise, Stevie Watson (0-36 from 5) who opened up from the southern end, seemed out of sorts and with no wickets in the first 6 overs, it was time for a change. Cam Davies (1-29 from 7) took over from Hayden at the northern end, while I (3-23 from 8), replaced Stevie to throw down some right arm rubbish from the southern end. Nathan Rudd (3-37 from 8) replaced Cam at the northern end to sneak in a few overs of spin before the break. Ruddy was in the wickets in just his first over when he struck the streaky opener, full on the toe and straight in front. Luckily the bowling changes stemmed the flow of runs for a little and as we slowly began to take wickets, Broady entered the drinks break at 3/89.

Strong knocks from Broadbeach’s numbers 7, 8 and 9 which included a very stylish innings from J. Adams, really put us on the back foot in the last 10 overs. Jamie Lennix (0-23 from 3) and Timmy Murdoch (2-19 from 4) along with some tight overs from Mr Davies saw us complete our 40 overs with Broadbeach hitting up a sizable total of 9-206.

Yuvraj Johal on debut for the club opened up our innings with Jed Sessarago with Varun to fill the ‘Jawid’ spot, a little lower down the order this week. Sadly, before the end of the second over and with the score at just 4 runs, the rain returned. After a heavy downpour lasting 40mins, the umpire approached both myself and the Broadbeach captain. Doing my best to feign frustration and bitterness, we all shook hands but not before I murmured ‘you guys got lucky’ under my breath to the opposing skipper.

That was a pretty sluggish performance with the ball and in the field this week boys. While we had some chances that didn’t quite carry or go to hand, I counted at least 6 dropped catches. We can’t expect to have to create 16 wicket-taking deliveries each week fellas, so we must hold those chances when they come our way. Back home next week to take on local rivals Southport Labrador at the home of Gold Coast Cricket, Sam Loxton 1.

Saturday saw the 2 Runaway Bay 6 grade teams face off. With an hour of squeegee prep work on the pitch, it was deemed safe to play. I won the toss again (so hopefully this is a trend moving forward) and chose to bat. The Canning duo of Arran and Hamish opened the batting for us but both fell cheaply to some good bowling who has clearly added some change up balls to his skill set. Lightning and I came in next with the opening bowlers still on. It was very evident that the Orange side had a weapon of an outswing bowler in Jason. We decided to see them off and only hit the loose ones. Turns out many of the loose ones went to the boundary. I'd like to say they were middled, but let's just say the edge has a middle too! I fell for 28 just as drinks was called caught bt a classic 1 handed diving catch by Jason. After drinks, Geoff went on to make 37 before getting stumped to the crafty Coyne. Will and Toby played arguably their best senior innings to date. With the 2 young stars playing a solid middle order role in trying to keep the side from being bowled out. They held in there until a rain delay at the 25 over mark. When play resumed, we had a reduced innings and only 5 overs left to bat. The 2 immediately put the pressure back on the bowlers with some shots you would expect from Glenn Maxwell, but not from these quite but effective kids. The shot of the day for me was from Will, with a superb lap sweep that raced away for 4! Will ended up with 35 and Toby 18. Both players were run out trying to get every last run they could for the team in selfless sacrifices. James had 1 ball to face and in trying to hit it to the Gabba, he was bowled first ball. We ended up with a commendable total of 7-139 off 30 overs. Unfortunately the rain came back and that was the end of the game. We're looking forward to getting a whole game of cricket in next week and seeing if the Will and Toby show can roll on.

Over 50’s Navy

RBCC Navy Over 50’s Match Report.

Sunday seen us travel up the M1 to take on Logan Village. Yes we played, it was like traveling to a different dimension, Field was dry, Pitch was a little tacky but otherwise there was no doubt we would play. The day started a little late due to no show of the umpire so we ended up agreeing to an umpire and away we went. Meanwhile we waited and watched the Logan Vets arrive, from Grafton, Evans Head and Ballina to the south, Warwick to the west and who knows how far from the north.  We won the toss! 1st time this year I might add. So knowing the Newstead park ground and bowling first is always the best option I decided to bat. Yes I did! With the rain that was around my thoughts were if it rains at least we are getting some batting practice and have and opportunity to make the most of it. We opened up with Gilly and Larry and they looked pretty solid for the first few overs. Larry then played a beautiful square drive straight to cover point with the fielder diving forward and taking the catch inches above the ground. Muzz then joined Gilly and with the ball sticking and doing a bit they both dug in and fought for every run. Gilly then decided he must attack and even know deep mid was there he took him on and won,6 Runs! Soon after he smashed one to short cover and was gone for 18. We then had small partnerships all through the innings with Muzza Whyte holding up his end scoring when he could but more importantly keeping out the good balls. He finished with a mere 29 but it was the 100 balls he faced that shows the true grit of the innings, other scores were  Andy Rodrick 12, Azza Canning 12, Phil Holzinger 5 then myself and the ever reliable Robbie Reynolds finished the last few overs with 9 from 11 and 4 from 4 respectively. 7/108 from 40 overs.

Out to field with the thought of if we can get a couple early we are half a chance. Apparently talk at the break was they were looking to finish as early as possible so off they went, Cover drives off the front foot, Square cuts off the back foot. Nothing off the edges , perfect placement. While we toiled hard we were unable to breakthrough, chances were few and far between with all the luck falling Logans way. Openers Slater and Freiberg both hitting 50 and Piggs picking up the final few runs.

Next week see’s the “Battle Of The Bay” return for it’s second leg on the hallowed turf of Sam Loxton from 10am this coming Sunday. Whilst the Orange side took the chocolates in the first game a much improved Navy side will show up and try to even the score. If your in the area come down and watch some entertaining veterans cricket with matches on both grounds and cold beer at the bar, it will be the place to be this Sunday.

GO The Bay!
