Premier League First Grade

In an enthralling encounter at the Sam Loxton Oval, the Runaway Bay Premier Division team faced off against Helensvale 1st Grade in a pivotal Round 16 clash of the CGC Premier League - Division 1. The match unfolded with Helensvale establishing a commanding position, posting a formidable total of 268 runs before being bowled out in just over 61 overs. Despite this challenging target, Runaway Bay began their innings with tenacity, reaching an encouraging score of 42 runs without loss after just 14 overs. Key contributions came from Ben Houghton and Slayter Cox, both remaining unbeaten on 20 runs apiece, showcasing their ability to build a solid foundation under pressure. On the bowling front, Freddie Fowler and Nathan Barnwell emerged as standout performers for Runaway Bay, each claiming five and four wickets respectively during Helensvale's innings, demonstrating exceptional skill and control that limited the opposition’s scoring potential. Their efforts not only highlighted individual prowess but also underscored Runaway Bay's collective strategy to stifle Helensvale’s batting order effectively. As the match continues to unfold, anticipation grows around how Runaway Bay will progress towards achieving what remains a daunting target while capitalising on their promising start.

- Runaway Bay reached 42 runs without loss after 14 overs. - Ben Houghton and Slayter Cox both scored unbeaten 20s. - Freddie Fowler took five wickets for Runaway Bay; Nathan Barnwell claimed four.

Freddy Fowler not only took 5 Wickets on Saturday he took out the Wild Thing Fishing Charter Raffle

Day 1 of the Round 16 clash began with the Bay 2s making the trip westward to face Helensvale at the hottest ground in Gold Coast Cricket - Hession Oval. While the rest of the Gold Coast registered maximum temperatures of 30degrees, it must have been far closer to 40 degrees just east of Discovery Drive. With the sun stinging through my several layers of zinc and the humidity through the roof, I considered how much fun it might be to field in these conditions. “Not very”, was the conclusion I drew. As the Helensvale captain launched (as opposed to tossed) the coin, which saw the umpire having to scurry for cover, I bleated ‘tails’. Every week I win the toss, yet every week I am even less sure of what we should do. My decision this week had no more thought behind it than the temperature. ‘We’ll bat, thanks mate’. I didn’t even look at the pitch or the outfield.

Setting out with the explicit orders and a team goal to try and post at least 100 runs in an innings, Yuvi and Krish opened up in the blistering heat. Facing out 6 dots was enough for Yuvi 0(7), and as he attempted to hit his 7th delivery over cow corner, he was caught at mid-off, 1-0. A few overs later Krish, hit on the pads and after a lengthy appeal was adjudged LBW for 2 from 32 balls. Timmy Murdoch again looked in fine touch by stroking the ball through the covers and point regions. Sadly, Timmy fell to the trap that had been set for him, by cutting a delivery straight to point. Timmy departed with 19 runs from 47 deliveries yet the score was still only at 3-21. Good effort Timmy! I blocked. Then I blocked some more. I missed a few. Then I blocked a bit more. Jed 2(10), replaced Timmy but he soon too was on his way. Mitch and Jamie were both bowled without adding to the score, by straight deliveries that did nothing untoward. When Matt Baker 2(22) joined me at the crease we still only had 36 runs on the board for the loss of our 6 wickets. “Time to block”, I thought to myself. Alas, Matt fell just as we looked to have seen off the quicks. After bringing up his fifty (his birthday) earlier during the week, Travis-toupee Harker stormed out to the centre, no doubt ropeable that he had been listed at no.9 in the order. “Presidency don’t mean sh*t in second grade mate”. His fury was compounded when Stevie, without an inclining of sarcasm in his voice, had asked Travis “Trav, have you really played for 50 years at the Bay?”. Good one Stevie! Travis was a man on a mission and not long after he had dug a crater in the Helensvale pitch marking centre, he got into his work by slapping the ball through point and gully for boundaries. “Time to block”, I once again mused to myself. Hogging the strike and refusing to run any singles off my bat, Trav took the attack to the opposition both with the bat and the tongue. “I’m in their heads” he whispered to me between overs as we edged our way towards 6 for 60. Finally, after another 30 blocks or so I fell to an horrendous shot, caught at square leg for the most exhausting and ugly double-digit innings that has surely been played this season 14(105). Not long after, Travis belted one that he insists came off his pad to conclude the knock of our innings, finishing with 29(44). “Bit slow Trav”. Stevie Watson 3*(32) and Hayden Kyle 2(20) both performed courageously before Hayden was bowled to end our innings just 15 runs short of the targeted 100 runs.

Defending the modest total of 85, we set about making early inroads Helensvale’s top order. Hayden and Stevie took the new ball. Unfortunately for us, both took a bit of tap from the Helensvale openers Benji and P Baird. After just 6 overs and with the score over 50, it was time for something different. And how else would one describe the bowling action of Mr Mitchell McPhee? Ambling in of 4.5 steps, Mitch’s right arm seamers off the wrong foot soon did the trick as a catch was skied to Yuvi at mid on (1-56). Travis took over from Stevie at the northern end and worked into the same boring rhythm he’s been operating with for 50odd seasons. “Boring!”. But in the stupid game that is cricket, boring works you see, and sure enough Harker dismissed Benji before reaching his own 50 (2-60).  Hayden returned for a second spell and picked up a cheap wicket with a chip to midwicket (3-62). Trav picked up yet another to have the home side teetering 4 for 73. Dear reader, as you may be aware, there is very little sincerity in these reports, but one thing that I can’t bring myself to joke about is the quality of Matt Baker’s wicket keeping. With the shadows lengthening around the ground, Hayden Kyle ambled in and caught the edge of the Helensvale left-handed no4. Momentarily, wrong footed, Matt dived full-stretch with his non-preferred left hand, to his left to take as good a catch as you’re likely to see at this level. Fast forward past my blocking clinic to 5:17:10 on the frogbox and enjoy. The second wicket for Hayden had the Helensvale boys 5 down and still requiring 11 runs for a first innings victory. Slowly the home side did knock off the last few runs needed and at the end of the first day’s play, Helensvale lead on first innings by just the single run at 5-86.

This was a great comeback after a rough start to the day boys. I’m so proud of how we fought back and held our own in really tough conditions. We took the fight to these blokes and definitely had them hesitating in their aggressive approach a little towards the end of the day. On to next week where we hope to backdoor Helensvale to gain second innings points.

We turned up to Surfers confident of a good showing following on from our victory last game.

We won the toss and bowled in hot, overcast conditions on what looked like a slightly sticky wicket.

Due to a communication mix-up we were one short but lucky for us, Kelly Schultz, ladies' captain, was there with Jake so we 'encouraged' her to put some sunscreen on and come field for us. After one small misfield to start, she was great for us, fielding cleanly and even chasing a ball to the boundary, then flicking it back for Will Marron to throw in. Saved two runs off Jake's bowling, nice work Mumma.

We started very well, having them 3-16 after Jake grabbed the 1st wicket, and 2 wickets in my 2nd  over. Unfortunately, in my next over we then put 2 catches down in slips which let them off the hook and allowed them a partnership.

Soon after, Jake got a wicket off a no-ball, then on the free hit, the batter got caught again....this time by captain alzheimers who forgot it was a free-hit haha and celebrated wildly as we laughed at him.

Jake Scultz wasn't so impressed, but hopefully he learns from that and works on not bowling no-balls at practice.

I threw the ball to Will Marron 1st  change and he continued on from the previous week and bowled well, breaking the partnership with a good bouncer. At the other end, young Will Altass in his first 3rds game got a go and was too short in his first over and a half. With a bit of encouragement and run up correction, he found his range and bowled a really good spell 6 overs 0/23.

Surfers put on another good partnership of 50 and I brought on Hamad and Angus, thinking gee we're short 1 bowler here...

Hamad bowled ok, bit short on occasion, but did his middle over job well. 6 overs 0/26.

Gus at the other end blew through the middle order ending with figures of 3/18 off his 4 overs. Not on my bingo card, but good on ya Gus!!

We finished the tail off with Jake, myself and Will each grabbing another scalp.

Jake Schultz - 8 overs 2/32

Gross - 8 overs 3/23

Will Marron - 7.3 overs - 2/25

Surfers 154 all out (if we take those 2 catches when we had them on the ropes, who knows?

In reply, we started shockingly.

Wade McDougall, who's been troubling batters for years, bowled in the right areas and unfortunately our top order didn't apply themselves.

Hamad Ahmad - edged out 2nd  ball

John Deitz - edged on to his pads, still given out lbw?? 6th  ball. Not a happy camper rightfully so.

2-0 1st  over

Gus & Will Altass both quacked as well, 4 ducks in top 6........

Varun looked good for 13, then walked straight into their fly slip trap by slashing at a wide one.

Will Marron and Sean Sandford steadied the ship and rebuilt well putting on 30 together, before Will decided to try and slog one on the 3rd  ball of the over after hitting a four and a 2 off the first 2 balls.

Situation awareness is going to be a focus during our last games this season.

I joined Sean at 6-56 and we knuckled down to try and take the game deep, both of us having no trouble with the pitch, playing with a full face of the bat.

Sean eventually played on from a ball that nipped back, so it was down to myself, Flynn and Jake to score 80 at 5 an over. Not impossible.

Flynn got caught at cover and Jake got cleaned up to roll us for 9-92.

More positives than negatives, we competed and didn't fold. Just need to seize the moments.

We welcomed Burleigh to our home ground, just south of Cairns, in Ormeau. Bizza lost the toss again & we were asked to field first. We had our boxing gloves ready for Mr. Parker & co. but unfortunately he was too scared to front up & as a result the game was played in the right spirit. We opened with Josh Foe & Duane the rock, but it became clear early that they were in no hurry, being 2/10 off 11 overs & 3/34 at drinks. Their yawn fest finally came to an end in the 31st over, all out 77. Josh Foe finished with 1/8 from 5, Duane 0/6 off 4, Fridge 2/12, Schuey 0/7, Dr. Quinne 3/25 & Nate Foe 3/19, one of his scalps due to an unbelievable catch, horizontal through the air, at full stretch in the opposite hand, it was bloody unbelievable. Our turn with the willow & we decided to open with the former Surfers duo in Conan & yours truly. We got off to a steady start until Conan run himself out (unlucky mate) but not before a rapid 24 from 30. His departure brought Critto to the crease & he was gone 1 ball later. Bizza was next & its fair to say he wanted to get to the pub early & decided to end their misery with a quickfire 33 from 16, some old bloke remained 21 no. We passed their score in the 13th over, they dragged their sorry butts back to Burleigh & we all went to the local pub. Cheers, Jamie Hunt.

This week we travelled down to Mallawa to take on 2nd placed Palm Beach. Firstly I'd like to apologise. I am writing this thanks to dropping the first 3 catches of the match.... Unfortunately it didn't get much better with around 8 or 9 catches going down between us. Harry (1-20) opened the bowling and was keeping it tight with good line and length taking the opening wicket having them 1-26. At the other end Krusty (0-32) was unlucky at times but the batsmen picked up the run rate from some loose balls. Noah (0-37) and Hamish (1-37) bowled to some set batters and were unfortunately picked off ticking over the score. I must say though, Hamish was unlucky with the ball beating the batter and forcing false shots time and time again. We had them 1-108 at the half way mark. Arran (1-29) and myself (2-19) paired next to try and get a breakthrough. Arran was trying a combination of in swing and off cutters who got the breakthrough wicket of the Palmy captain 2-137. I found the slow ball out swinger change up to be effective, bowling the opener to have them 3-155 then taking another with the same change up ball 4-164. Hamish finished his spell taking the scalp of the big hitting wicket keeper to have them 5-180. At the other end Geoff Watson (1-14) was excellent keeping it tight when the batters were swinging for the hills. In the end they scored 6-190. I'll keep the run chase recap similar to most of our innings, brief. With regular wickets falling to quality bowling the opposition didn't look phased by our inexperienced side having us 6-36 at drinks. With the message of just have fun out there, Watto and Dale got settled and looked good batting together. Each of them played some great shots and started to knock the bowlers around putting on a nice little partnership together. Dale aka "DAD" continued his hitting with a big cheer from the sidelines of "GREAT SHOT DAD", before Geoff knicked off to slip. Dale eventually got caught for a well made 20. We then had our last combo of Harry and Krusty at the crease. Krusty had a typical innings in Krusty style, 9 not out. But for me it was a pleasure umpiring as I watched Harry meticulously going through his routine before every ball was bowled, and patiently waiting for a bad ball and then hitting the hell out of it. Everyone remember the name Harrison Rachow because he's a future star of our club! Unfortunately we were bowled out for 96, but we gained some valuable experience against a very good side this week. It's becoming a regular occurrence of losing our developing juniors to the call for duty in the higher grades with this week being no exception. But it brings us all so much joy to know that the purpose of our side in developing our youth is actually working well. We can't wait for next week and GO THE BAY!

6th Grade Orange

6th Grade Orange V Bonogin Won the toss and we had a bat. `Jamie and myself were out early to have us at 2/24. James 20 and Bob 11 hit the ball around but got out as well to have us 4/58 from 11 overs. Tony went cheap to an LBW he thought he hit. Greg getting out and we were in trouble with the score on 8/72 after 21 overs. The father son combo of Matt 28x and Kaeleb 18 saved the day with a partnership of 49 before Kaeleb was out controversially stumped as it looked like the keeper did not have the ball. In a first both Matt and Kaeleb had to change gloves due to batting so long and swetting it up. Arron stayed around with Matt to get us to 9/126 from our 36 overs. The 2 youngsters Aidan and Alex opened the bowling and bowled really well without luck but kept it tight. Matt came on and got the first wicket and the score was 1/23 from 12 overs. Matt got a second wicket to have the score at 2/43 from 17 overs. Arron got the next wicket at 51 from 20 overs. Alex came back and bowled 2 tight overs while Bob came on and picked up the 4th wicket at 95 from 30 overs and it was looking like a real tight finish was going to happen. With Aidan and Matt to finish the last 4 overs there was controversy with the scorers saying Matt only had 1 over. Aidan’s over was great and also getting a run out with a direct hit. They needed 20 to win and Bob had to bowl. Only 7 off the over so it was down to Aidan to get us home with the ball. A dropped catch costing 2 runs and an over throw had it down to 3 runs off the final ball. Aidan hit the batter on the pads and they only got one run so we got up by 1 run. A great effort by all. Bowling figures were Matt 2/13 from 6. Bob 1/21 from 4. Arron 1/29 from 6. Aidan 0/17 from 6. Alex 017 from 6. Tony 0/14 from 5 Kaeleb 0/8 from 3 Jim P
