“How can you put so much force through the crease and be trying so hard for the ball to still come out so slowly?” Mitch McPhee, 7 February 2026 - commenting on the bowling of P. Brown.

Round 17 of the season had the Bay 2s back on the road and travelling out west to take on a formidable Beaudesert side. After a brief rendezvous at the Metz Cafe, Canungra to break up the drive, we arrived at Selwyn Oval and were greeted by a surprisingly soft and wet track. Given the lack of rain in the region over the past 3 months, to say this was a surprise would have been an understatement. Suspecting that the sticky track might produce a bit early on for our quicks, I opted to bowl first after a successful toss. Stevie (0-21 from 3) took the ball from the southern end and partnered with George (0-25 from 4).

Both bowled good deliveries, without reward while the Beaudesert openers pounced on anything loose. As the score passed 60 without loss inside 10 overs, I threw the ball to Tom Gossett who drew a rash stroke from capt. Gittins. A high, skied ball was taken expertly on the fence by Sam Heathwood and we were away. Tom’s wicket was followed soon after by some success for Mitchell Bailey who after setting up Beauie’s other opener, snicked him off with a peach of a delivery that left the right hander. Beaudesert’s score had very quickly gone from 0-62 to 2-62 then 3-82 when Tom struck again, to claim dubious LBW. With our opening bowlers struggling early and Mitch Bailey beginning to wilt in the February sun, there were some important middle overs to be made by our attack. Will Altass, making his debut in Second Grade was thrown the ball and given the task of working with Tom to apply the squeeze. Just three balls into his spell, a short delivery was skied over the head of mid-on… “Uh-oh”. As 10 fielders held their breath realising that this high, spinning ball was hurtling towards none other than Stevie Watson, we all (as so many have done before) completely wrote Stevie off. Never one to back down from a challenge, Stevie ambled backwards then pivoted to his left to set himself still about 1m away from where the ball looked like it would land. Then, just as the ball fell groundward, Stevie extended his arms and in a perfect crocodilian motion with his hands, swallowed the catch as easy as you like. Will had his first 2nd Grade wicket and Beauie had slumped to 4-86. While Will toiled away and picked up another wicket to yet another catch from Stevie, I (1-28 from 8) replaced Tom to burgle some overs before the last 10. A dropped catch from his skipper would have given Will a third wicket on his debut but as it turned out, Will finished with just the two wickets for 29 from his 7 over allotment. A great bowling performance by a future Bay stalwart who I can see playing a lot of first grade cricket for the Club. While Tom closed out our bowling innings from one end, finishing with the superb figures of 4-20(8), we rotated Hoc and Mitch Bailey from the southern end. Despite not picking up bulk wickets, Mitch Bailey again looked the most threatening of our bowlers this week as he returned figures of 1-38(7). Hoc 1-27, bowled three tidy overs, claiming an impressive dismissal to remove a right hander who was bowled around his legs. That is unless, Proctor tripped onto the stumps… After a good start from the Beaudesert batters, our middle overs bowling really dragged things back and with our 40 overs completed, the opposition closed their innings at 9-181. We suspected this was probably sub-par, however with the required run rate of 4.5, there would be no room for complacency.

Hoc and Proc paired again this week to kick-off our innings. Similar to previous weeks, Proctor 4(6) looked the goods before lacing a short, wide delivery straight to backward point. Timmy Murdoch replaced Proctor and was given the privilege of having the best seat in the house to watch Hoc dominate the opening bowlers. Two of Hoc’s lean/pushes through wide mid-on for boundaries, off the bowling of Kleese will stick in my mind for quite a while. As our score raced past 50 (of which 35 or so were Hoc’s) inside 9 overs, Timmy Murdoch 8(15) was struck on the hip and adjudged LBW. The very next delivery, Sam Heathwood belted an on-drive into his pad and he too fell victim to a shocking decision. Tommy replaced Sammy but as our two highest run scorers paired at the crease, Hoc played a uncharacteristically rash stroke and was caught at mid-on for 45(44). When Tommy snicked off to a spinner the Bay collapse was well and truly on the cards as we slumped to 5-80. I joined Austin Billing at the crease who greeted me with a steely gaze of a man determined to steer us to victory. While I snicked, missed and left half volleys, Austin completely controlled the game and bossed the opposition. Just as our required run rate would creep up, Aus would oblige by finding the boundary. When the bowling was tight, Aus found the gaps and turned 1s into 2s with expert running and shot placement. Fatigued from my 8 overs straight of 47 km/h deliveries and still reeling from Mitch McPhee’s snide yet 100% accurate intra-team sledge directed at me, I missed a straight one and was out for a sluggish 25(47). My choke left the side still requiring 45 runs for victory. Shortly after my departure, Aus brought up his first senior 50 for the club and as he raised the bat, victory was in sight. The well-set Austin was joined at the crease by McPhee who smashed a timely run-a-ball 18 before being bowled. Mitch’s departure left Aus and Mitch Bailey with 18 runs required for victory with just over 5 overs remaining and 3 wickets in hand. Fortunately, Bailey 12*(10) clipped his first delivery for 4 to calm the tensions of the onlooking Bay 2s. An expensive 37th over meant that Austin “Iceman” Billing was given the opportunity to put the game to bed in the 38th over. Aussie seized his opportunity by belting a four to seal the deal and secure the points for the Bay 2s with an over and a half to spare, finishing with a match-winning 60*(75).

This was another gritty victory fellas. Beauie are far from a poor side and it was a great effort to pull the game back towards us after a wayward start. Tommy, Mitch Bailey and Will’s performances with the ball meant that we wouldn’t be chasing a big total. Hoc’s blistering opening performance got us off to a great start with the bat but the play of the day went to Austin who expertly steered the side home with the utmost coolness and confidence. We now look ahead to taking on a no doubt, rattled Southport at Loxton 1, who have suffered 2 losses on the trot.

3rd Grade

3rd grade v Southport

We were Lucky on Saturday to play on the Hallowed turf of number 1 oval at home against our rivals Southport,
We lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, We opened the bowling with Cam Davies and Josh Hoare Cam taking a wicket in his 2nd over so things were looking good for us early on, Our 2 opening bowlers bowled tight but we lacked wickets, We bought on Jake Shultz after Josh bowled his 5,Jake bowled really well taking a much needed 3 wickets in his 7 over spell before we turned the 2 spin kings in Hamza and Kunal, Hamza bowled his 8 straight 1for 24 while Kunal took 3 wickets for 27 off 6 overs Jared Austin came on after Jake took 1 for 14 off 6 we bowled out Southport for 146 on an absolute belter of a batting wicket, we missed out on 6 runouts due to sloppy fielding by us but knew 146 was nowhere near enough of a target they had put on,
It seamed this low batting total was worrying Southport and their best line of winning was talking absolute nonsense and they done that the whole time,(Shock) We opened the batting with Taika Hoare and Brendo Robers, Both Batters got us off to a great start blocking out the total noise from Southport’s dribble. Brendo was first to leave us on 19 off 35 Which bought in Hamza, Hamza spooned one to short midwicket last ball before drinks for 15 of 22 This bought in our Keeper Creedy, Creedy wasn’t going to die wondering and blasted a well executed 23 off 22, Taika still in playing with such maturity not letting Southport’s sledging get under his skin getting out on 50 off 84 balls this inning this young man played was exceptional. Lucas Frazer and Kunal came to crease with 30 runs to win and these boys played beautifully for red ink to win us the game with ease Lucas 15 not out off 11 and Kunal 9 not out off 12.
Another great win for out 3rd grade side and a big shout out to our young lads Taika and Jake both boys playing above there years to help out in another big win against Southport

4th Grade Navy

4 navy match report against helensvale

First things first – super proud moment for the Bay as one of our own, the big rig Jamie, chalked up his 100th game. Huge effort, big man

Nathan wins the toss on a very tidy bit of syntho up at Riverstone and we decide to have a hit.
Jamie and Jeddy open the batting… and unfortunately Jamie’s celebrations were short-lived. Five balls in, an absolute seed finds the off stump.

Straight back to the sheds wondering what just happened.
Things didn’t exactly improve through the middle.
S Rudd, Jeddy, Hamad and Flynny all fell quick, cheap, and in no particular order, which really put the brakes on.
Enter N Rudd, standing tall while chaos unfolded around him. Only two boundaries in his innings, but if you’ve ever seen Nathan bat, you know he doesn’t love running — he prefers to mentally dominate bowlers instead. A gritty 28 off 35, doing all the hard yards while everyone else treated their wicket like a free trial.

Matty needs to learn to block the ball coming in at the 8th over gets off the mark with a 6 & then out a couple of balls later caught on the boundary on 15 off 8

Arran chipped in down the bottom with 11 off 33 but no one would stay around with him so he decided to try & clear the boundary & got caught at mid on

We got rolled for 86 off 22 overs

We opened the bowling with 2 newbies to the bay

Khan (left armer) bowls pretty bloody quick but swings the ball a mile it was awesome to keep to & watch.
Khan can be one very happy man his first wicket in BAY colours was none other then Ben Daley
Then Khans next over he got out there other opener with a caught behind then he got out hawks 2nd best batsman for a golden

Khan: 4 overs, 3–14. Take a bow

Then somehow, Flynny convinced both N Ruddy and myself that he deserved a bowl… and annoyingly, he was right.
Second ball — stumped.
Bowls with all the confidence of a bloke who definitely shouldn’t have that much confidence.
Flynny: 4.5 overs, 2–18.

which put helensvale at 4 - 39 so we were still in the game

Unfortunately, Helensvale then decided to play the most boring cricket known to mankind. No risks, nothing in the air, just nudging it around like it was a Tuesday night net session. They only lost one more wicket and chased the total down in the 17th over.

Even this deep into the year im still so proud of the boys coming week in week out & we arent getting the results but they are showing so much fight until the very end

4th Grade Orange

Rd 17vs Surfers

Another home game against another top side,  with us a bit short on personnel this week it was going to be a challenging game.

yet again another failed coin toss attempt, so we were again in the field,

We got off to a good start with James grabbing an early wicket with Wolfy taking a great catch on his return from a broken finger and was an inspiration all day with his fielding efforts, great to have the wolf man back,

We kept the pressure on them with some good bowling the stand out bowler was Kane Taylor who bowled 6 overs for just 15 runs, taking 2 wickets, at times he was unplayable, Lucas Anderson was bowling with great pace at the other end & picked up one of their best bats with a great ball edge to Chris castle behind the stumps which was the 2nd of his 4 catches taken for the day,

We had started the day a bit short of numbers which was tough,

Jack Castle who absolutely run himself to the point of exhaustion unfortunately had to leave the field with heatstroke and didn’t return, Nik Lennix was fielding for us and was showing great toughness chasing balls down diving around on the boundary and putting her body on the line, some might say she showed her Hubby a thing or 2 about how to keep the bridge lowered haha, thanks for your efforts Nik,

At the drinks break we had them 4/88 and were really in the game,

if we could keep them under 200 we were a big chance,

The surfers batters had other ideas & came out after the break full of aggression, putting on a 91 run partnership off 79 balls that really pushed their score up,

Jamie Lennix came on and picked up 2 quick wickets in the 31st over,  6/180 with 4.2 overs remaining, awe had our secret weapon on the ground Craig Secombe whi was roped in at the last minute to be 12th man, a big thanks to craig for helping us out,

Noah had once again bowled very well, but we were a bowler short and the job was left to wolfy to finish the innings unfortunately a couple of catches went down late & they took full toll, with Surfers posting a good score of 6/239,

We opened the batting with Lucas & Noah,

Noah got off to a flyer hitting a boundary and taking 7 off the first over but missed one a couple of balls later and was out bowled,

The Legend Trent Ray (stingers) joined Lucas and the boys batted beautifully together putting on a great partnership of 83 before Stingers was out for a fantastic 47 off 51 with 4 4s and a huge 6,

Unfortunately the wickets started to fall & we lost 5 for 43 to be 7/133 off 29 overs,

Which included losing Lucas for a well made 40 with 5 4s,

Backs to the wall and the huge task of getting 106 off 7 overs, Chris who was going well was joined by Jamie and the boys battled hard putting on a partnership taking us to the last over when Jamie was unfortunately stumped for 18, we ended on 8/168 facing all our overs which we hadn’t been able to do for a few weeks, Chris was unbeaten on 34 (35) and Will 1 with Craig padded up ready to come in we missed out on seeing the  Secombe boys bat together,

Unfortunately today wasn’t our day, but the boys fought hard against the odds all day and put in a great effort which was great to see, next week is the huge bay vs bay battle when Orange takes on Navy on Loxton 3, the game of the year and not to be missed, thanks for reading and see you all next week at the bay.

Round 17 & another home game, this time against Bonogin. Biz lost the toss & we were asked to have a bowl. Grossy & Schuey took the new ball with Schuey striking first & second removing one of theiropeners & then their number 3 in quick succession leaving them 2 / 28. Grossy at the other end had them playing & missing a lot as well as a few french cuts thrown in but bowled without luck finishing without a wicket, he stormed off after his 6 over spell as grumpy Grossy but returned with the keeping
gloves an over later as not so grumpy Grossy. Snitty & Azza took up the attack next & also both bowled well without luck with a mix of skied balls just falling short or in the gaps or grassed completely. Fridge was next to bowl & had them bamboozled with his variations, he was the next wicket taker leaving them 3/96 at drinks. Not long after drinks Azz took the next scalp with the score on 127 with Bonogin really only scoring from the one end with only one batter really having a go on a very fast outfield. Biz threw the ball to Conan next in an attempt to entice them into a few shots from the other end, that did the trick but didnt produce a wicket. Biz tried his luck next, with the runs starting to flow now until Andy slowed them down a bit & Snittys 2nd spell really halted proceedings in the run department. Andy was he next wicket taker with Bizza taking 1 in the last over leaving them 6/219 only managing 1 run off the last over & leaving their only decent batter stranded on 98. The wicket takers, Schuey 2/31 off 5, Azza 1/39 (6), Fridge 1/20 (6), Bizz 1/16 (2), & Andy 1/23 (3). Our turn with the bat with Jamie & Conan asked to open while the decent batters took a break. That break didnt last long as Jamie was the first to go in the 2nd over but not before he helped himself to 5 4s scoring 21 off 9 with the score on 23. Cappy was next with Bonogin’s chirp disappearing as he got straight into his work before he was the next to go for 53 off 40 balls with the score on 124 sharing a 101 run partnership with Conan. Brad was next with the King & Queen of Foxton beach (Brad’s parents) deciding to make the trek across the detch to see what all the fuss was about. After his mum declared she taught him everything he knew about cricket while coaching both him & Snitty back home, all eyes were on Brad with his parents & wife all eagerly waiting for Brad to plunder their attack & bring home the chocolates for the day......Anyway, Brad was next to go for 8 as the Foxton Beach crew hastily packed up their deck chairs & chilly Bins & headed for the airport in disgust! Conan was next to go for
46 off 45 with the score on 4/140, still requiring 80 to get with NRR on our minds as that’s what seperated us from our good friends Southport on the ladder. Bizza replaced Brad & Azz replaced Conan & the pair made light work of the 80 needed in around 10 minutes, Bizz finishing 43 not out off 24 & Azz 36 not out off 19 completing the demolition in 25 overs. We all enjoyed a bbq & a bit of banter after the game with Critto & Grossy supplying the snags while Cappy suppled the prawns. A win & a boost to our NRR with our next assignment the 2nd placed Southport, let’s hope the rain stays away.

Cheers JH.

6th Grade

We won the toss and elected to bat.
That was one of the highlights of the game as following that our top 3 batters all left for donuts. Dale came in at 5 but unfortunately hit up on a defensive stroke and was caught for 2. We were 4/17.
It was left to Coyney and myself to try and carefully build an innings to try and put some kind of total together. We managed to get to 75 before I fell for 40 and then Coyney 2 overs later for 25 on the stroke of drinks. We were 6/78.
Aidan came and went without bothering the scorers and we were hurting.
Now at the crease was our superstar Haz, whose been travelling the Bahamas with 4th grade but kindly came to strengthen our side this week. At the other end we had our very patient (except for that time he won us a close game with a reverse sweep boundary on his first ball) Lachy. These lads had a partnership played in perfect harmony. Each one complimented the other. Lachy had the finesse approach, whilst Haz was patient, but then absolutely punished every bad ball that came his way, including yet another magnificent 6. He's getting bigger and stronger and really starting to make a habit of big hitting.
These 2 put on a valuable 50 run partnership on a day where runs were hard to find. We could all learn a thing or 2 from the way these guys go about their business in the middle. They got us to the back end of the innings when Amrit and Rory came in. Rory was looking good, hitting the middle of his bat but didn't get the opportunity to get going before Amrit was caught just inside the boundary.

All out 138.

Broadbeach came out with hesitation due to the barrage of quality bowling from our King and Giant Killer. It was our Giant Killer that set the tone early taking the opening wicket. King never likes to be outdone though. What came next was a shock to everyone at the ground. Rory started tearing apart the Broadbeach innings taking 4/16.
Sam and I bowled with Sam claiming the big wicket of the other opener whilst I was leaking runs but creating chances with edges and miss hits regularly.

They were 6/84 at drinks, and were very nervous.

Our "Stand in Mop" Lachy, bowled with extreme precision and claimed 2/4 including being on a hat trick. At the other end we had James bowl his first over for the Bay and was exceptional. Keep that arm warm James!

In what was mostly a friendly game didn't end that way, with a disappointing display from our opponents...
For the record, great wicket James and an excellent catch Lachy!

It was a tough day but so many positives were found. Our Grilld player of the day award went to Lachy. His composure under pressure with the bat, deadly accurate bowling, combined with his never give up attitude was something special. His highlight for me was he risked injury diving for a ball on the boundary to try and save a run that he probably should have let go for 4 on the final ball of the game. He made us all so proud.

Unlocking FrogBox Highlights with PlayHQ and LillyPad

This season, the Runaway Bay Cricket Club is excited to bring more of our cricket to life through FrogBox live streaming and highlight packages. We’ll be aiming to stream as many games as possible across Premier Cricket, Veterans, Juniors, and Women’s cricket, showcasing the talent and spirit of our club to family, friends, and supporters everywhere.

To make the most of this technology, we need the help of our scorers. The key lies in how we use PlayHQ alongside FrogBox’s highlight program, LillyPad. Here’s how it works: When live scoring in PlayHQ, you’ll notice a button on the screen labelled “Bowler Running In”*. This button should be pressed just before—or right as—the bowler begins their approach. Doing this triggers the recording of that particular ball, ensuring any exciting moment (like a wicket, a six, or a boundary) is captured for our highlight reel. By consistently pressing this button, our scorers help create accurate and exciting highlight packages that not only celebrate individual performances but also promote our teams and club culture. With everyone’s contribution, we can build a library of memorable moments that players and supporters will be able to watch back and enjoy for years to come. Let’s work together to make this season one to remember—both on and off the field.

Over 40’s Division 2

Rd 8 40s div 2

vs Alberton

For our 2nd last game of the H & A season and we played Alberton @ Loxton 1,

down some troops through injury & unavailability we had some faces Craig McGhie, Nathan Rudd, Greg Bird & Matt Cunningham coming into our side,

Winning the toss we had a bat and started with Chipper & Conan,

Chipper didn’t hang around long which brought Cappy to the crease & it didn’t take long for him to get into his work showing his class making batting look very easy as he slayed the bowling to all parts of Loxton 1,

The partnership was 75 when Cappy who had raced to his 50 off just 33 balls retired, 7 4s

Col joined Conan who had played the feeder role for Cappy beautifully getting him back on strike & continued doing so as the score continued to tick over and the boys put on a 47 run partnership before disaster struck when Col smashed one back at the bowler who got fingers to it but the ball continued on to clip the top of the stumps with Conan unfortunately short of his ground, its the 2nd time in as many games this has happened to us might need to stay in our crease boys haha,

2/135 off 21 overs we were on track for a good score, Birdy came to the crease & quickly got into his flow increasing the run rate with some great strikes finding the fence with ease,

With Bizza the late arrival pacing up and down the fence chomping at the bit to get at them, Col struck a boundary to get to his 50 (55)

Bringing Bizza to the wicket with 1 ball remaining in the 30th over which he proceeded to smash to the fence, 2/205 with 10 overs to go,

A few balls later Birdy retired getting his 50 off just 34 balls 6 4s & 1 huge 6 over the long on fence,

it was all set up for a Bizza Show & he started well smashing 3 boundaries before being deceived by the cunning old fox bowling very slow looping off breaks & just like that the show was over 14 off 9 was a very rare fail for Bizz,

Trav was at the crease with clarky but Trav (15) went Lbw,

That left Rudd & Clarky with the finishing job which that did a fantastic job a great partnership of 36 off 25 balls Ruddy 20(18) & Clarky 19(16) getting us to 4/282 our best score for the year,

After another fantastic lunch we took to the field missing our 3 opening bowlers so far this year so we had to mix it up a bit, and that we did opening with Birdy & Bizza

the first 2 overs were fantastic 0/5 but unfortunately the Alberton batters found their range in the next couple Birdy’s 11 ball 2nd over not helping haha followed by some strong hitting from the Alberton skipper,

Bizza struck back in his 3rd getting the other opener well caught by Ruddy, Bizza 1/19 (4) a good spell

At 1/36 Craig came into the attack he was a bit nervous with his first bowl on turf for 12 yrs,

the alberton batters were really getting going and taking it to our bowlers,

10 overs in 1/77 and their skipper retired for a very hard hitting 50,

The boys managed to start pegging them back as Craig settled into his work grabbing his first wicket sliding a fantastic in-swinger into off stump, 2/99 and shortly after 3/118 with Craig striking again He finished with the figures of 2/41 off 7,

Straight after drinks we brought on the spin twins Trav & Ruddy and this is were the game changed with both bowling extremely well and squeezing Alberton’s middle order the boys combined for 7 wickets between them Trav 4/13 (5.4) & Ruddy 3/15 (5) to snuff out any chance of a chase, Cappy 0/5 also bowled 2 great overs of off spin as well as Clarky 3 good overs at the end as we bowled out Alberton for 185 a very strong win which puts us into 2nd spot & a big chance at a home final,

Thanks for all the support we got at the game especially all the hard work support crew Kel, Mel, Hamish, and off course our fantastic ground curator thanks Phil, we look forward to seeing you all again in 2 weeks time when we play Coomera !!
