Sixth Grade Orange beat Bonogin in an afternoon thriller

Premier League First Grade

So we arrive at the hallowed Sam Loxton for another home game against a very strong Mudgee outfit. We knew we were up against a strong team and would have to be at our best to compete.

I lost the toss ( not very good at these) and Mudgee decided they would have a bat. So we opened with Morgan and Benny canning and Jeeze they bowled well for their opening spell. Morgan picked up an early wicket and they bowled brilliantly for the first 10 overs keeping Mudgee to 37 I believe. I was very happy with that as I thought we were building pressure and keeping it tight.

Brought the spinners on and kept its reasonably tight through to drinks but were unable to break anymore partnerships. Was time to bring the big gun on Jawid and first ball after drinks with a perfectly planned short wide half tracker and we got their strike batsmen caught at point 🤣🤣🤣.

After that they just kept building partnerships and we were unable to get their opener out who carried his bat and finished on an unbeaten 110 I think.

Unfortunately off the last 10 overs we let our guard down a bit and they put on over a 100 they put together 81 runs off the last 6 overs so we realise this is a part of the game we really need to tighten up on.

Moving onto our batting and we started off poorly with rooster going early which brought Josh cox to the crease.

Coxy and Benny Houghton put on a decent partnership until Benny was caught after looking very solid.

Lucas and Coxy then built another partnership which was the goal this week with not losing more than 3 wickets through till the 30th over which we achieved although we weren’t scoring too freely. Coxy and Luca done a fantastic job and have built a platform to work from moving forward.

Lucas Fraser dismissed after a very hard fought 44 pushing through a back problem to stick it out.

Foxy finished with a nice half century and we ended up batting our 40 overs and finishing on 148 which is a step on the right direction.

Onwards and upwards from here boys and I’m sure a big win is right around the corner.

Premier League Second Grade

‘We are the seagulls, we are the Bay. We roll teams like the clouds of Pompei’…. Well, not this week we didn’t.

With the team song still ringing in our ears after last week’s efforts, round 4 of the season had the Bay 2s heading south down the M1 and taking the Neilson’s Road exit to challenge Mudgeeraba. Corbwood oval, hosting the second best deck on the Coast was looking in great nick. After winning what I misinterpreted as a crucial toss, I gleefully announced that we would bat first lest we be subject to some of the familiar brutality we have suffered at the hands of Mudgee in recent years.

Back and feeling fresh from a few weeks off, Mitch McPhee opened up with Varun. The two looked solid for a few overs before Varun (4 from 14) showed just how ready he is for the up-coming 2 dayers by stepping away to the on-side and exposing his (soon to be obliterated stumps) while trying to cut one through mid-off. Amir Malik replaced Varun, and looked in great touch, belting the opening bowlers straight down the ground to signal his intentions. After a short partnership, Amir (29 from 44) fell to a great caught and bowled. I met Mitch out in the middle and I was greeted by the worrying news that Mitch’s hammy was feeling a bit tight. I decided to test it out within a few balls by calling him through for a quick single which revealed that said hammy had well and truly exploded. ‘Oh no!’. Mitch (9 from 24) fell shortly thereafter trying to hit out and sadly had to be helped off the field by our beloved high school teacher Mr Davies (3/49). Matt Baker replaced Mitch and looked good as he and I sought to steady the ship. It was at this point that Mudgee really applied the squeeze to us by setting strong offside fields and operating spinners from both ends who bowled to these fields superbly. Baker and I put on 29 runs before Matt was bowled by one of the Mudgee spinners as we slumped to 4/78 (from 27 overs!). Needing some quick runs, Will Marron (6 from 10) was elevated in the order. Wasting no time, Will took an almighty swipe at his very first ball but unfortunately, he too would soon be back in the sheds after another tidy caught and bowled. When Nayeef (3 from 9) came and went cheaply, it was clear that Chris Bartlett and I had a lot of sensible cricket to play to get us up to a score like 150 that might have us in the game. With that in mind, I decided to run Chris out for a diamond duck after jabbing one to backward point and calling him through for a suicide run. “Sorry mate”. Our tail offered little resistance against Mudgee’s attack as we scraped together 115 runs before being bowled out in 38.3 overs.

With a Low total on the board, early wickets were always going to be crucial. Step up Stevie Watson, who cleaned up Poeppmann second ball. True to form, when advised by his teammates on the importance of that wicket, Steve replied ‘Why? Who was that?’ Onya Stevie! Will (0/32 from 4) and Stevie (1/24 from 4) bowled well for a few overs each, before copping some tap from in particular, Mudgee’s opener. James Munro came on to replace Steve and after taking a wicket with his fourth delivery, decided that he’d had enough and dragged himself (1/1 from 1). Chris Bartlett (1/23 from 3) came on and bowled a good over before remembering who he truly was and getting belted out of the attack. Nayeef once again mesmerised the opposition when the ball was thrown his way. Solid and dependable as ever, Nayeef got through 5 very economical overs picking up the figures of 2/16 (5). Mr Davies bowled a few good overs but with 1 over to go before drinks, Mudgee five wickets down and only needing 8 runs for victory, we knew it was time for something a little different. Wondering which arm he bowled with (his throwing never gave it away), I tossed the ball to Varun Sharma to have a dig at one Harry Maher. I must say, Varun did his job very well by making sure that we wouldn’t need a drink before heading back north up the M1, as Harry skulled what would be the last ball of the match onto the Mudgee nets and down into the creek.

That was an all-round poor performance boys. We got bogged down during the middle overs and threw far too many wickets away. Our fielding has regressed to where it was a fortnight ago and our bowling lacked a bit of discipline. That being said, as always, we played the game in a good spirit and we never let the state of the game get to us. We need to value our wickets, tighten up our lines with the ball and get more eager in the field as we look ahead towards Saturday, Sunday cricket next week.

Patrick.

Premier League Third Grade

3rds took on Surfers at home with 4 changes to our lineup due to unavailable players. Sean won the toss and batted. We lost both our openers early, bringing in Jamie Lennix and Stephen Wolf to rebuild our innings.

They put on 40 together before Jamie was out LBW on the thigh pad for 10. Wolfy batted well making 36 and Sean Sandford knuckled down to stabilise the middle order ending up on 21. Nathan Rudd was the only other bat to reach double figures, and we limped to 7/102 off our 40 overs, but importantly we showed resilience to not get bowled out.

Defending a small total, we needed to pitch the ball up at the stumps to create chances. Unfortunately, none of us bowled where we wanted to and also dropped a couple of takeable opportunities. The only bowler who put the ball in consistent areas was Stephen Wolf who also claimed our only wicket.

When the team was putting on the covers later, he complained of having sore shoulders for carrying the team!

Nas Hashimi bowled 2 decent overs near the end and we thank him for filling in.

Surfers passed our total in 17.2 overs. We'll just put that one behind us.

Peter Crittenden won the Meat Tray on Saturday

We rolled up to Elanora high with only 10 players after our part time skipper Jerry, decided he did enough last week & would leave it to the rest of us. It took until round 3 for our fill in skipper to actually do something, winning the toss & electing to bat first. We opened with Conan & Col, Conan out for 1 wasnt the ideal start but we were pretty consistent after his departure with Col 51, Josh Foe 18, Gary McCoy 10, The Fridge & Critto 30 quickfire runs each, Andy Foe 12 & Nate Foe 7. All out for 185, only using 32 of our allotted 36 overs. We thought that would be enough if we bowled well. We opened the bowling with Schuey & Josh Foe, starting well with 3 quick wickets having them 3/41 early on. Then the game turned for the worse when their skipper strolled to the crease & asked Josh to remove his hat while bowling, fair to say the triplets weren’t happy with this but the fireworks were only about to start. Their captain decided he could not only bat but umpire at the same time, instructing the umpire (his son) to give him not out after a confident LBW shout from Conan. There was also a stumping which was clearly out & a run out also, prompting a few of our blokes to say lets just walk off as the instruction to their umpires (all of which were young kids) was clearly to say not out when having to give a decision. In the end they passed our score with their captain not out 80 with 3 overs to spare. All our bowlers all stuck to the task but were all quite frustrated knowing we had to bowl them to get them out. Andy Foe finished with 1/41, Nate Foe 2/44, Josh Foe 2/23, Conan 0/25, The Fridge 0/25 & Schuey 1/28. I feel if we had 11 we might have got a bit closer, but in the end a good game was ruined by blatant cheating, but we move on to next week. Well done Col with a run a ball 51, thanks to Mal again for scoring & again providing some nourishment for everyone in the form of snacks, but a huge thank you to young Jacko who fielded all 36 overs for us. Thanks also to Critto for bringing the barbie & snags again but got the shits after the game & didnt fire it up!! Jamie Hunt

Noah McQueen takes the Membership Draw cash of $300

6th Grade Navy

This week 6th Grade Navy played Mudgeeraba on their home ground, winning the toss Mudgee decided to bat. Toby and Jake opened the bowling and kept it tight going for just four runs an over, very respectable given the short boundaries. Eventually Jake’s persistent line and length paid off as the Mudgee opener flirted with an outswinger providing a catch to first slip 1/49. Both Jake (1/32) and Toby (0/21) bowled exceptionally well and got us off to a good start.

It wasn’t long before the Mudgee number 3 landed the ball in the creek and onto the adjacent field. Noah took on the challenge and tussled with the Mudgee Man Mountain knocking his leg stump clean out of the ground. Celebrations and sighs of relief as we felt like we had dodged a bullet and were back in the fight, 2/86. Mudgee’s next batter strode to the crease confidently and had us completely fooled by his youth and diminutive stature. We paid dearly for underestimating him as he scored freely with an array of shots.

Over 21 saw the dismissal of the other Mudgee opener with a Canning combo, bowled Hamish, caught by Arran a whisker inside the boundary, 3/115. Out strode the Mudgee Captain who smashed us for a quick 38 off 19 balls until Chris ‘Chippa’ Schultz found the edge with Flynn ‘Bucket hands’ Richardson taking a fine one-handed catch, 4/175.

Our hopes of chasing a total near 200 faded as the Mudgee batters smashed us to all the short boundaries they knew so well. James and Geoff ‘Lightning’ McQueen put their body on the line but Mudgee still managed to find the boundary with the creek eventually swallowing up our ball.

Replacement ball in hand, Chippa struck again in the 31st over bowling the young gun who had accumulated 42 runs, 5/198. The thirty second over started badly with three consecutive fours. The caught and bowled on the fourth ball by Little Geoff provided a momentary distraction from the leather chasing, 6/211. The only highlight of the final over was a yorker that sent one Mudgee batter back to his tent only to be replaced by another who also believed our ball belonged on the adjacent field.

Chasing 258 a quick calculation suggested we needed approximately eight an over. With that in mind, Geoff and Will strode to the crease with Geoff only to return two balls later, 1/0. Toby joined Will and showed his hitting prowess with a straight drive for four off his third ball. The partnership was gaining momentum until Toby was caught for 14, 2/21.

Chippa got stuck into his usual style of quick ones, twos, fours and a straight 6 down the ground while schooling Will on how to run between the wickets. A stoic crew of Bay supporters watched on with hearts in their mouths and tongs at the ready but Will was up to the challenge. With the run rate now over six in the 11th over Chippa departed with an entertaining 25 off 20 balls, 3/64.

Arran came and Will departed having accumulated a solid 22 off 33 balls. With James now at the crease, and the score 4/67, the two experienced campaigners set about salvaging some pride. James put his head down wooing the supporters with a rarely seen defensive shot and then a cracking hook shot to the boundary for four. Our celebration was short lived as the next crack was the ball going through the stumps, 5/73. Noah showed some resistance and then Flynn chipped his first ball over the tallest man in the field whose gravity defying leap and sticky left hand made Flynn long for the comfort of a cherry blossom bubble bath, 7/76.

With 15 overs still to go enter Hamish Canning who managed to drag himself away from his second grade fielding debut just in time to don the pads, grab the willow and join his Dad in the middle. The Canning Combo set about restoring the pride of the Navy crew with some gritty batting. Hamish eventually slashing at one too many was caught out for 13, 8/112.

Lightning McQueen entered the fray and together with Arran, set about building a solid partnership denying Mudgee an early afternoon. The Bay supporters were awoken by the crack of the bat (or was it the crack of the voice?) as Arran lofted the ball over the boundary for six. After accumulating a gutsy 37, Arran was trapped in front with just three overs remaining. Jake and Lightning valiantly tried to bat through until the end but unfortunately fell one over short with Lightning left not out on 16. The team total of 150 off 34.2 overs providing some pride.

As the Bay faithful packed up their chairs our Captain reflected that while it wasn’t the team performance we were hoping for, there were definitely positive contributions by every player. It’s the consistency of these contributions that we need to work on to challenge our opposition.

6th Grade Orange

6th Grade Orange V Bonogin Gold Lost the toss and we were sent in to bat.

A few changes to the lineup had me and Jamie open the batting. A solid start was what we were after and after I gave them 2 chances (1 hard and 1 easy) that’s what we did and at the half way mark we were 0/71. The bowling was tight and with defensive fields it was hard to get the boundaries but we push on to a 120 run opening partnership with myself out for 66 in the 29th over. Jamie went on to get 53 and from there Tony 29x and Bob 11x took us to the end of the innings with the score ending at 2/167 We opened up the bowling with Murray and Matt with the first wicket falling at 13 To Murray and the 2nd to Matt at 21. After a partnership of 48 by the opposition Rob came on and picked up a wicket in each of his first 4 overs and at the half way mark they were 6/102. Kaeleb bowling very well picked up 2 wickets in 2 balls to be on a hat trick. No hat trick but the score was 8/102 and we were in a good position to bring home the win. The no 10 bat turned out to be a lot better than the batters before him and things got very tight. Murray came back on and picked up a wicket to have the score at 9/139. A few more boundaries got the score to 156 in the 32nd over before Tony picked up the last wicket with a great catch to Murray on the boundary to get us home by 11 runs. Bowling figures : Murray 2/31off 6, Kaeleb 2/40 off 6, Rob 4/9 off 6
