Runaway Bay Triumphs in Nail-Biter Against Burleigh

A thrilling encounter sees Runaway Bay clinch victory by just 11 runs.

In a gripping clash at Liberty Finance Oval, the Runaway Bay Over 40 Division 1 team showcased their resilience and skill to edge past Burleigh Cricket Club by a narrow margin of just 11 runs. This match, part of the CGC Over 40's Division One league, was not only crucial for standings but also an opportunity for both teams to assert their dominance in the early rounds of the season. Runaway Bay set a challenging target with an impressive total of 237 runs, powered by Travis Harker’s steady innings of 53 runs from 76 balls, alongside Garred Birrell who electrified the crowd with his quick-fire knock of 50 runs off just 35 balls. Their contributions were pivotal as they established a solid foundation that kept Burleigh on their toes throughout their chase. Shaun Gannon also played a vital role with his composed innings of 46 runs, ensuring that Runaway Bay maintained momentum despite losing wickets at regular intervals. The bowling unit then stepped up to defend this total effectively. Harker not only contributed with the bat but also proved instrumental with the ball, securing two wickets while conceding only 29 runs across his seven overs. The disciplined bowling performance was complemented by Fill-in’s economical spell, taking one wicket for just 21 runs in four overs, while Michael Schumacher added to the pressure with another wicket from six overs. Despite Burleigh’s initial resistance—highlighted by Bevan Goddard's notable contribution before falling at a critical juncture—their innings faltered as they struggled to keep pace with the required run rate amid tight bowling from Runaway Bay. The key partnerships for Burleigh fell short as they lost wickets at crucial moments: starting strong but unable to maintain that trajectory as they reached only up to four wickets down before finishing on a respectable but ultimately insufficient score of 226. This match served not only as a testament to Runaway Bay’s depth and determination but also underscored their strategic execution under pressure—a trait that will serve them well as they progress through this competitive season.

Over 40’s Division 2

In a tightly contested match at Hession Oval, Helensvale Over 40 Division 2 edged past Runaway Bay Over 40's Div 2 by a mere seven runs. The game, part of the CGC Over 40's - Division 2 league, showcased the competitive spirit and skill of both teams as they battled it out over the course of forty overs. Helensvale set a challenging total of 231 runs, with notable contributions from their batting lineup. However, it was the response from Runaway Bay that truly captured the attention of spectators. Their batsmen displayed resilience and determination, with Bradley Collett leading the charge with a well-crafted fifty off just fifty-two balls. Colin Wakefield and Chris Schultz also made significant contributions, both notching up half-centuries that kept Runaway Bay firmly in contention until the final overs. Despite some impressive bowling from Helensvale, which saw them claim five wickets throughout the innings, Runaway Bay’s batsmen remained focused on chasing down the target. With wickets falling at crucial moments—most notably at scores of thirty and forty-nine—Runaway Bay showcased their ability to regroup after setbacks. As they approached the end of their innings, tension ran high with only seven runs needed to level the score. Although they ultimately fell short at three for two hundred and twenty-four runs, their performance highlighted key strengths within their batting order and underscored their potential for future matches.

Over 50’s Orange

In a compelling encounter at Newstead Park, Logan Village over 50s faced off against Runaway Bay Orange Over 50 in Round 3 of the CGC Over 50's league. The match showcased the spirit of amateur cricket, where camaraderie and competition blended seamlessly. Runaway Bay began their innings with Sean Sandford anchoring the batting effort, scoring a resilient 29 runs from 79 balls. His cautious approach illustrated the challenges posed by Logan Village’s bowling attack, but ultimately it was not enough to set a formidable target. Jason Hay contributed with a steady performance of 20 runs from his allotted balls, displaying patience as he navigated through a tricky phase of the innings. Despite their best efforts, including some lower-order contributions that kept the scoreboard ticking, Runaway Bay finished their innings on a modest total of 105 runs. On the bowling front for Runaway Bay, Terry Blacktopp shone brightly with two wickets for just 39 runs from his five overs, demonstrating impressive control and movement. His efforts were complemented by Jason Hay’s economical spell which yielded one wicket for only 25 runs across four overs. This disciplined bowling performance gave Runaway Bay hope as they aimed to defend their total. Fielding also played an integral role for Runaway Bay; several catches were taken cleanly under pressure that showcased their commitment on the field despite the challenging circumstances.

50’s Navy V’s Mudgeeraba 10/11/24 Loxton 1

We arrived at an absolute beautifully prepared Loxton wicket hoping to win the toss and bat against the star studded Bushman. Didn’t happen and we were asked to bowl. Rod Venn was again a force and picked up an early wicket getting Softy Cox for a duck. This had their 2 Brissy recruits at the crease and Phil Puller put us to the sword quickly retiring for 52. We then tightened things up a little mainly thanks to a great spell from Arran Canning 1/34/7 and Craig Secombe 2/24/7 and the only maiden over for the innings. We did, however, take wickets on a regular basis getting them 7 down. Once again, our extra’s cost, with us actually bowling 6 extra overs. We need to be better and concentrate on control and accuracy. Fielding was somewhat amusing especially when our boundary rider was running in a completely different direction to the ball, Not once but twice. Then it happened, That bloody magpie got me good! Bleeding from the ear and already on weary legs, I looked to the sideline for the sub fielder. Seeing Mudgeeraba in fits of laughter not at my misfortune but the fact the sub fielder was actually asleep in the chair! So on a day we celebrated with the Reynolds family battle I threw Robbie the ball hoping to entice his father Keith to the wicket but when Robbie got a wicket with his first ball Keith was nowhere to be seen. They ended with 7/247 which looked like being a lot worse at one point.

Out to bat we went knowing the job ahead, survive, bat as long as possible and hope the magpie gets them like he did us. Newcomer Greg Ryan saw off the first over of seam and looked comfortable being thrown to the lions in his first match for the club. To our surprise they opened with Keith Reynolds left arm slow, very slow! James Gilbert decided he would try put the first one over the sightscreen and just like his boy did Keith picked up a wicket first ball. Craig Secombe in at 3 and was a different opponent for their bowling attack looking at ease with whatever they threw at him. He did have to stand there, and watch wickets fall at regular intervals. We only had 2 batters get into double figures, of balls faced! Craig Secombe 27 from 64 and Robbie Reynolds 12 from 28. We were dismissed in 22.3 overs for 69. There is some good out of all this as that is not the worst score for the weekend with another club being dismissed for 48. Given we had some top order batsman out and a few newcomers at the end of the day Veterans Cricket is the winner and win, lose or draw, spending the day playing cricket with a great bunch of blokes is what its all about. See all you legends at the next game 24th v PBC. Get some sleep Larry!
