In a highly competitive fixture at Arthur Angove Park, the Queens Centaurs Over 40 edged out the Runaway Bay Over 40 Div 1 by just 24 runs. This match was crucial in Round 5 of the CGC Over 40's Division One, showcasing the spirit and dedication that characterises amateur cricket. The day began with the Centaurs putting up a formidable score of 188 runs, setting a challenging target for their opponents. Runaway Bay's innings featured commendable contributions from Luke Northam and Shaun Gannon, who both exhibited resilience in their batting. Northam top-scored with a steady knock of 40 runs off 51 balls, while Gannon provided solid support with his own innings of 37 runs from 46 deliveries. Their efforts were critical as they attempted to chase down the total set by the Centaurs but faced significant pressure throughout their innings. Despite their valiant efforts, Runaway Bay struggled to maintain momentum against a disciplined bowling attack from the Centaurs. Travis Harker stood out with two wickets for just 20 runs in seven overs, alongside Nathan Rudd and Garred Birrell, who each claimed two wickets as well. This collective effort saw them restrict Runaway Bay to a final score of only 164 runs. Fielding played an integral role in this match too; notable run-outs showcased the sharpness and awareness of the Centaur’s fielders which proved pivotal during key moments of the game. Even though Runaway Bay fell short on this occasion, their performance highlighted areas for growth and resilience amidst stiff competition

This round, we traveled up to Tansy Park in Loganholme to face Coomera. Despite some last-minute team changes due to unexpected availability issues, we managed to field a side.

We lost the toss, and Coomera elected to bowl first on a sweltering day where temperatures soared to 38 degrees at times. Unfortunately, our innings didn’t start well, losing Hamad, Conan, and Brad early to slump to 3/15.

Col joined Chris at the crease, and the pair briefly steadied the ship before Chris was undone by an absolute peach of a delivery.

4/27 Lucas joined Col, and the duo dug in admirably against some excellent bowling.

However, Lucas was dismissed after a superb one-handed overhead catch in the slips, leaving us at 5/48 with 20 overs left. Darren and Col were now set the task of building a competitive total. Together, they added a handy 24-run partnership before Darren edged one to the keeper. TK joined Col, who retired soon after, leaving TK to face the next ball, which unfortunately saw him dismissed.

Aaron Cosmo registered his first runs for the 40s but was dismissed shortly after. Jamie came and went, leaving Col to return and join Ric Gunsel at 9/94. The pair produced the best partnership of the innings, adding a valuable 30 runs before Col was run out in a bid to retain the strike. He finished with a well-made 77, while Ric remained unbeaten on 3 off 32 balls a fantastic effort.

With 124 on the board we felt we were at 25 runs short. However, cricket is a funny game, and we knew early wickets could change everything.

When we took the field, the breeze that had offered some respite earlier in the day was gone, leaving us to bowl in oppressive heat.

Needing early wickets we struck early when Chris trapped their opener LBW with the second ball of the innings—an ideal start! Coomera’s batters rode their luck early, with a few near misses, before TK struck in the 5th over. Darren followed up in the 8th, dismissing the other opener, who had enjoyed quite a bit of luck, leaving Coomera at 3/59.

TK picked up his second wicket shortly after, but we couldn’t stop the flow of runs, and a couple of dropped chances proved costly. At the 14-over drinks break, Coomera was 4/79. To shake things up, Col rotated the bowlers. Aaron came into the attack and bowled a tidy first over, with a chance going down, but made it count in his second to grab his maiden wicket, leaving Coomera at 5/89.

In a moment of confusion Hamad cursed himself before being told he had actually bowled the batsman,

6/107, Conan and Jamie also had a go but couldn’t make further inroads. Ultimately, Coomera chased down the target, capitalizing on our missed chances.

It was a tough loss, but the team fought hard. With some luck things could of been different , we’re not far off from turning these close contests into victories.

That wraps up 2024 for us! Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you all in the new year!

This match was pivotal for both teams within the CGC Over 50's league, bringing together seasoned players eager to leave their mark. The day began with Runaway Bay Orange taking to the crease first, where they struggled against disciplined bowling from Palm Beach. Jason Hay stood out with a resilient innings of 43 runs off 77 balls, hitting seven boundaries and demonstrating patience despite limited support from his teammates. Other notable contributions came from Jim Phillips and Robert Laing, who scored 19 and 13 runs respectively. However, the innings faltered as wickets tumbled at regular intervals, culminating in a total of just 116 runs after facing all but one delivery of their allotted overs. On the bowling front for Runaway Bay Orange, Rory Solomon and Robert Laing each claimed one wicket but faced challenges containing the opposition’s scoring rate. Terry Blacktopp's economical four-over spell saw him concede only six runs without taking a wicket—a commendable effort that highlighted his ability to apply pressure. Fielding also played a crucial role for Runaway Bay; Adam Gardner led the charge with three catches and contributed significantly to run outs that kept Palm Beach on their toes throughout their chase. As Palm Beach began their pursuit of the modest target set by Runaway Bay Orange, they capitalised on early loose deliveries. Shane Wilson fell early for just ten runs, but Tony Mangos anchored the innings well until he was dismissed at a score of 57.
