Three's nearly get home in thriller
Premier League First Grade

Premier League Second Grade

Day 2 of our Round 14 match saw the Bay 2s arriving at the picturesque Sam Loxton Oval to be greeted by a road-like pitch and slick outfield. Beaudesert, having already secured first innings points, were well ahead of the game and lead by 146 runs. The question lay in the backs of all our minds as to Beauie’s plans to move the match forward. After having declined the opportunity to declare and have a cheeky 20minute bowl at us on day 1, I could only assume that the opposition, were looking to push for a lead of 200 to ensure that they only need bat once in the match. With that in mind, we set a plan attempting to do drag their innings out as long as possible whilst reducing the time that we might have had to bat to save an outright loss. ‘We’ll set an in-out field and let’s see how long these blokes are happy scoring at 2.5 per over.’
I (3/42 from 16.2) took up the ball from the southern end and threw down my standard, mediocre seamers. Stevie (3/45 from 13) partnered with me, as the team sought to support him for the three more wickets that would secure us an unlikely bar tab. After a few overs of very boring cricket, the wickets began to fall. Mitch (2/28 from 11) replaced Stevie at the northern end and went straight through J McClure, who you may remember from such innings as the match-winning 30odd the last time we played Beaudesert. When I finally snicked off the Beauie no. 10, the call came from the pavilion, signalling that the Beauie boys reckoned they had enough. Our bowling in the first session of day 2 was pretty tidy, taking 4 for 50 from 15 overs. That being said, we still faced a deficit of 199 and approx. 60 overs to survive another outright loss.
A slight tweak to the batting line-up saw Krish and McPhee switch places, with Krish moving up the top and Mitch sliding into the middle order. We supposed that perhaps without Beaudesert’s tearaway quick, we might be in with a shout. Sadly Yuvi finished the match with zero runs after he was bowled early in our innings, for his second duck of the game (1-0). Krish 1(23) was comprehensively bowled by the left-armed McLure after a watchful vigil (2-8). Timmy any I partnered together for a 33-run partnership before I skulled a half-tracker to short midwicket off the young leggy for 11(39). Jed came and went, caught and bowled for a golden duck the very next delivery to see us slump to 4 for 41. Timmy Murdoch looked a lock-in for red ink until he was caught behind for a well-made and elegant 29(94).
As I stood at square leg on umpiring duties, Mitch McPhee approached me while Timmy plodded off the ground and mused, ‘Hey Paddy, what do you reckon? If one or two wickets more fall quickly, should I just start whacking it and try to score a hundred?’ After being momentarily lost for words, I responded ‘Mitch, if you do that we’d almost be in the game…’ Mitch confidently concluded, ‘nah, mate we’re well and truly out of the game’. ‘Well in that case, I guess… yeah.. umm.. try score a hundred then Mitch.’
Jamie lasted 15 balls for his 3 runs until he snicked off to the slips (6-59). To his credit, Mitch batted very responsibly and managed to belt 3 four in his 46 ball innings. But as he moved to just 84 runs away from his ton, his eyes lit up when he spied a half tracker from the young leggy. With bat drawn all the way back past his right shoulder, Mitch wound up to hit this rank delivery on to the training nets as he has done so many times before. However, just as the ball began to dip after its first bounce and right at the instant before it looked to bounce a second time, Mitch somehow managed to top edge it high, high, high over his own head, straight up in the air, only to be caught by the chuckling wicket keeper. As the entire Beaudesert side erupted in laughter Mitch, stayed crouched over his front knee with his head down in disbelief and our score at 7 for 61 with the deficit still 138 runs.
‘Today’s the day’, we all though as Cameron Davies replaced Mitch and Matt Baker began to stroke the ball languidly through the covers. After surviving an appeal for caught behind, it was clear that the luck was on Matt’s side. That was until one of his crisply timed cover drives was given out LBW by the standing umpire. Ever the eager student and buoyed by his promotion by default to no10, Stevie Watson sough to confirm the ‘plan’ with me before he strode out to the middle. I let Stevie know that all that was expected from him was his best efforts (and perhaps between 100 and 115 runs if he got some loose deliveries)… RBCC’s favourite Highschool teacher, Mr Davies went down swinging with an entertaining 16(26) before he fell, to leave us 9-83. 18 year old Hayden Kyle, sporting the same batting kit that his parents bought him for Christmas 2013 got off the mark, off strike and secured red ink as Stevie Watson was bowled for 0(17) to secure our fate of a crushing 115 run outright loss.
Two home 2-dayers and two outright losses doesn’t bode well for us, as we move into the remaining fixtures of the season which are all 2-day matches. I don’t mind losing fellas, in fact I’m pretty good at it. But at the moment we aren’t even competing. We need to find a way to stay in matches for longer and to convince the opposition that we belong because I know we are better than our results suggest. Time to look towards next week’s Saturday/Sunday 2-dayer against Surfers. Patrick.

Premier League Third Grade

Pumped after last weeks narrow loss and bolstered by some new blood we were excited to hit the field,on what only could be described as a cracking day for cricket !Second week in a row as Captain and with the support of Travis, yet again, the team appeared to be well rounded.Winning the toss and pondering on whether to Bat or Ball, decide runs on the board are always better !
Unlike last week, we did not yet off to a good start with the bat and deciding to open with Jake Secombe and myself, proved not to be the stroke of genius I thought it might be with Jake hitting the third ball straight to cover. Angus came out and looked to get in only to snick a wide ball to 1st slip and we were 2 for not many. We were getting bogged down and trying to push the run rate I edged a ball onto the stumps and when Travis fell straight after drinks, we were on struggle street. Varun showed some fight back but with Wolf / Dietz / F Richardson all falling for less than 4 runs we stubbled to 79 from 30 overs ☹ Basically our batting was CRAP !
However, with a never give up attitude and knowing we had at least outscored our 2nd Grade counterparts, we were positive we could still win as the pitch was offering plenty for the bowlers ! The first wicket fell on ball 2 and then 32 runs came, and we looked to be in real trouble, with a very early finish on the books, this is where it started to get interesting. We broke the partnership with a runout and then when Jake Schultz got the incoming batter for a golden duck,
Hayden Gill then came on from the other end and took 3 quick wickets and we had Helensvale 7-60.Unfortunately, a critical catch went down, and they had plenty of time and just prodded the ball around to get over the line.
Man of the Match went to Hayden Gill with 3 for 25 off 6.4 overs and he hung around only scoring 4 runs but a valuable partnership of 15 runs.
Three highlights for me; Wolf took a great catch, J Secombe in the outfield - meant I didn’t have to run around as much, T Harker 6 overs for 6 runs and 4 maidens (he just couldn’t buy a wicket.
Will close on, mentioning probably one of the most awkward run outs I have ever seen. Yet again the Richarson boys showed us how not to field ! Angus somehow managed to pick up the ball after almost falling over, throwing it at the keepers’ toes, only to have Flynn drop the ball, then somehow find the ball under him and still have time to take off the bails. The only saving grace was the batters were both standing next to each other at the wrong end. If not bad enough Angus also while at square leg umpiring, decide to have his brother judged run out when he was clearly in – we could all see it clearly from the side lines – no love lost here ! But seriously they make us laugh 😊

Loxton 3 We welcomed Queens to the picturesque Sam Loxton 3, where Bizza won the toss & we had a full team of 11 until our part time opener, Col, had to go & save someone on one of his boats, so he dropped down the order. We opened with Conan & Luke & after a steady start, Luke was dismissed for 15 off 15. That brought Andy Foe to the crease & due to some tight bowling, the run rate stagnated slightly but it wasnt long before Andy got into his groove, sharing a 100 run partnership with Conan before Conan was dismissed for 76 from 63 balls. Fridge was next to sample the carnage in the middle & while him & Andy were going about their business, Bizza was pacing up & down like an expectant father, eager to get in & sample a bit of the action! Andy finally made way for the skipper, but not before compiling a career best 78 from 62, sharing a 128 run partnership with the fridge & its fair to say most of their team have probably played their last game of cricket after witnessing the carnage these 2 produced but it was about to get a lot worse with the skipper finally getting his chance out in the middle. Fridge was finally dismissed for 83 from 46, including 4 sixes, sharing a 51 run patnership with Bizza in about 3 minutes. Biz was next to go with 52 from 19 next to his name, including 4 sixes. Josh Foe was next & he also fed on the carcass adding a rapid 23 from 9. It was about this time a large crowd, all wearing Cronulla shirts, had gathered to witness their favourite son in Birdy ply his trade to another code, but sadly one of the 12 yo kids from Queens trapped him in front first ball & he was gunned by Conan for a golden duck promting the large crowd to burn an effigy of Birdy in protest. Dr. Quinne was the last batter in orange & blue to stride to the crease, he contributed 15 from 7, leaving us with a respectable 6/365 from our 36 overs. It was about this time Col the part timer decided to wander back in & see the score & declared “ I cant believe we made a score like that without me”, good one Foss! Queens turn to bat, fair to say they needed a good start Josh (the bully) Foe bowled their opener with the first ball of their innings before snaring another one, leaving them 2/0 from the first over. It only got worse for the visitors, with them only reaching 153, it could have been a lot worse for them if our part time cricketer, part time boat captain, Colin J Wakefield could catch, we would’ve been back at the bar a lot earlier. It’s fair to say he only gets a game because of his wife Mal, who scored all day again & provided a smorgasboard of snacks. (You can do so much better Mal). Anyway, back to the game, Josh was the pick of the cartel again finishing with 3/16, Dr Quinne 1/11 from 6 & Andy Foe rounded out a good day for him & MOTM honours with 2/25. Not a bad day at the office with a 212 run victory, the only downside was Col returning from the jetty. Cheers, Jamie Hunt. Over to you Foss....

Navy 6th Grade Match Report
This week Navy 6th Grade were playing Mudgeeraba up on Sam Loxton 4. Mudgee won the toss, saw the nice sprinkling of grass on the wicket and decided to have a bat.
Harrison Rachow and Will Altass opened the bowling. The Mudgee openers struggled to get runs against exceptional line and length from the Bay boys. Will finished his six overs with 0/8 unlucky not to have a few wickets next to his name. Harry trapped the Mudgee Captain in front in his final over finishing with figures of 1/18 off six overs. Noah McQueen and Hamish Canning came on to bowl, Hamish drawing first blood off his 3rd ball with Geoff Mc Queen brilliantly catching the Mudgee Young Gun at backward square, 2-39. While Noah kept it tight and built pressure from one end, the Mudgee no 4 couldn’t resist Hamish’s ‘mystery ball’ and skyed it to point where Harry took a great catch. At the halfway mark Mudgee were 3-56. Noah finished his six over spell 0-23, unlucky not to snare a wicket with at least two genuine edges just wide of slip. Hamish finished his six overs with 2-36.
Mudgee were starting to score freely until Arran Canning managed to apply some pressure in the 28th over with a maiden. Lachlan Barry then came on from the northern end and bowled the Mudgee number 5 with his first ball., 4-115. The Mudgee opener was still hanging in there until Arran bowled a lovely outswinger that took the edge and was gleefully accepted by Geoff Watson who was trying to make up for his earlier sloppy glove work, 5-119. Arran struck again two overs later when the Mudgee lad picked the good length outswinger to cover drive edging it to the keeper, 6-135. 6th Grade debutant Turab Shah come on in the 35th over bowling tight with Mudgee only able to get four quick singles. The Mudgee batters were primed to make the most of the last over but Arran had other plans expertly placing the ball so the lanky Mudgee batter couldn’t hit it, only two singles off the over. Mudgee finished with 6 – 165, although a few more runs then we had hoped for, the Navy team felt like we had a chance.
Brad Collet opened the batting and immediately demonstrated his intent scoring at almost a run a ball. Geoff McQueen was uncharacteristically out of sorts and was unfortunately bowled in the 5th over, 1-15. This brought Will to the crease who ably supported Brad as he accumulated runs with some lovely square cuts for four, hitting through the gaps for two and some quick singles. Unfortunately, one fielder was quicker then Brad and he was run out for 29, 2-51. Turab came in, hit a lovely four but was caught at Mid-off not long after, 3-61. Chippa strode to the crease on a mission to increase the run rate. In the 20th over two consecutive boundaries sparked Will’s innings into life. Over 23 saw Will hit a big six over mid-wicket followed by a four behind square leg. Will and Chippa ran quick singles ball after ball frustrating the Mudgee team who just couldn’t run them out. They reached the 100 run mark in the 26th over with 66 runs still to get in 60 balls. Many more quick singles until Will was run out on 49 after Mudgee dropped the catch but effected a run out, 4-120. Will was the back-bone of the innings, supporting his partner, preserving his wicket and then shifting gears when the run rate needed a boost.
Arran joined Chippa at the crease and they set about continuing the run chase at a run a ball. The pressure was mounting on the Mudgee bowlers with the 33rd over going for 13 runs with 9 off Arran’s bat and 4 wides, 4-152. Dare I say it, we were starting to think we could win this one. Arran was caught in the 35th over for an excellent 18 off 23 balls, 5-161. Lachlan strode to the crease and nailed a reverse sweep for four first ball taking the wind completely out of Mudgee’s sails and tie the score at 165 with 9 balls left. Lachlan was bowled next ball but Mudgee could barely lift their heads. Hamish arrived at the crease with one run needed for victory. He hit a fine shot down to third man off a no-ball and the Navy faithful went crazy! Chippa finished not out with 39 off 35 balls an innings that was the spark needed to get the run chase back on track. A great team effort with some very notable bowling and batting contributions.

6th Grade Orange V Bonogin
Won the toss and we had a bat. A slow start against some tight bowling with the first wicket falling at 67. Rob came in and played a very good innings of 42x. Deepak came in at the end and hit a huge 6 to get 12x and we finish on 7/136.
Not a lot to say about our bowling as they passed us in 13.3 overs 1 down with 1 guy getting 101x from 46 balls
