Finally Saturday Sunshine
Premier League First Grade
BYE
Premier League Second Grade
A week of full sunshine provided the promise that Round 14 of the season and the start of the 2-dayers, would go ahead without any rain delays. The Bay 2s hosted Beaudesert at Loxton and under lightly clouded skies, I won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked green but was rock hard – a decision that believe it or not, I standby.
After mid-week conversations with the ‘leadership group’, I decided to maintain the one-day batting lineup but for one minor change. With the exception of Timmy Murdoch who returned after a triumphant first grade debut where he didn’t bat or bowl, we were lucky enough to keep the same side as round 13. Yuvraj and Mitch McPhee 3 (13) opened up and looked to be in good touch before a diabolical mix up saw the two standing side-by-side at the non-strikers end, scratching their heads (1-3). Sadly Yuvi wasn’t able to move past the debacle and he too was soon on his way back to the sheds without troubling the scorers (2-3). Timmy Murdoch and I put on (what in the context of our innings) was an enormous partnership of 17 runs, before I snicked off (7 from 21) to leave us at 3-20. Jed replaced me and looked to pick up from where he left off the week before, striking the ball crisply through the covers however Timmy (12 from 45), soon fell to see us slump to 4-29. Krish came and went for 2(10) and when Jed fell for a well-made 21(39), things really were looking grim. Ruddy 0(11), missed what he referred to as ‘regulation leggy’ which was later described by his partner to be a ripping wrong-un. Matt Baker 0(2), belted his shot of the season, only to be caught at backward square which saw the Bay 2s flailing at 8-46. Like so many others, Jamie 1(13), too was caught at slip and despite some rearguard action from everyone’s favourite educator Mr Davies 15(23), we were dismissed for 63 from 32.4 overs. I mean, that doesn’t read too well, but an optimist would point out that the last time we played a 2-dayer we only scored 39.68% that many runs. At this rate of improvement, one could expect the Bay 2s to be hitting up first innings totals of 170-180 towards the end of the season.
A frustratingly early tea and missing out on the opportunity to have a quick 20mins at the Beauie openers by just seconds, gave us some time to regroup. We went out there positive and knowing that some truly strange things can happen in 2-day cricket. Hayden Kyle (0-30 from 8), commenced proceeding from the southern end of Loxton and looked to be in finer form than the two previous weeks. Stevie (swing demon) Watson (3-30 from 10), took the new rock from the northern end and wouldn’t you know it, second ball of his spell he blew off one of the openers pads! Not content with taking the single wicket in his first over, Stevie wrapped another left pad with just his fourth ball as the umpire raised his finger to leave Beaudesert at 2-3 after just two overs. Poor Stevie had to wait a few overs for his next awkward wicket celebration (Stevie keeps running back to the top of his mark while all of his teammates employ the standard huddle and high fives, around the strikers end) but when he smashed a straight one in to yet another front pad, he was back in business and Beaudesert were 3-22.
Fair to say that a few of us thought, ‘hey we were 3 for 20 odd too’… Unfortunately for us Beaudesert’s Samphier and Gittins got into a grove for a while. After a few dropped catches, Jed finally held one off my bowling (1-25 from 8) to dismiss Samphier for 42 but really, all was already lost as the pair had put on 98 runs and secured first innings victory. It got worse. It got much worse… for us anyway. Captain Gittins continued on his merry way, punishing anything loose, blocking the straight ones and leaving the wide ones. We did have him dropped on about 60 or so but outside that, it was a pretty flawless and brutal innings. When Gittins fell with the score at 5-205, he had bludgeoned 111(117), featuring 17 fours and a six. The centurion was well supported by Jaxon 41*(76) who true to his name, played a knock that the Bay 2s needed like a Hohl in our heads. One of the very few positives outside of just about everyone getting a bowl (9 bowlers used), was that the Beauie boys didn’t seem to want to have a dig at us before the end of day’s play and as the shadows drew long at Loxton 1, Beaudesert finished the day at 5-212.
A very VERY, rough day for the Bay 2s was only improved by the on-field banter we shared amongst ourselves as a coping mechanism. I must say that despite being utterly belted for the best part of 4 hours, we supported each other and generally kept spirits high. We move on to next week and the hope of avoiding an outright loss.
Patrick.
The members draw is drawn every Saturday after the Senior Match Reports which start at 6:30pm. The Members Draw Jackpots $100 every week if not claimed. The only catch is that you need to be there at the clubhouse to claim it.
Premier League Third Grade
It felt like forever since 3rd grade had played a full game of cricket and for myself, it had been over 8 weeks.
A bit of a change I decided to write more about the Team efforts as the stats are all in the book.
I was excited to get back on the field and with Grossy out, I had the pleasure of Captaining the side again.
Although with great assistance from Travis, who just loves directing the field placements – ‘point Hamad, point !’
Equally as exciting was we were back at Home and playing Queens really felt we had a great chance for a WIN (I know I say that every report)We got off to a great start
Winning the Toss and not sure what to do, finally deciding to bat on a hot but overcast day seemed to be the way to go.
We got off to a solid start although a couple of lucky breaks always helps and at drinks were on target to the 180run goal we had all agreed would win the game.
Unfortunately, a runout and some not so good decisions, resulting in the middle of the innings seeing a slowing of the run rate and we only managed 150.
The pitch was doing enough and regardless we still had belief we could bowl out Queens for under 150 and almost did exactly that !
We got a few early breakthroughs and at the Queens drinks break, we were neck and neck. A solid but frustrating innings by N.Benion in the end probably provide to be the difference. However, bring on Angus provided to be a stroke of brilliance (luck) and with 4 quick wickets, we thought there was still a chance only to see a few edges find gaps and the runs finally came with 5 overs to spare.
We knew we would need wickets to WIN and let’s say we made it a real exciting contest and proved Team morale is the key !
Man of the Match went to Wolf with 14run (R/O) and 2/28 but it was his efforts in the field that showed the never give up attitude can be the difference.
Three highlights for me; 1. Amir’s catch on the boundary, 2. A. Richardson getting 2/19 and 3. Travis bowling was tight and keep us in the game however he was not very happy about a possible LBW decision.
Will close on, mentioning Flynn doing a great job behind the stumps, but not so sure I like running around in the field – jury still out on this one 😊
Jared “Noodle” Austin won the Meat Tray and the family was well and truly happy

Navy 6th Grade Match Report 24/1/2025
Round 13 saw the Navy team travel to Davenport Park to play Bonogin Green. It is a picturesque ground but the grass was thick and looked like batters would have to work hard for their runs. Bonogin won the toss and we trudged onto the field in the ever increasing heat.
Toby Hudson and Harrison Rachow opened the bowling and kept it tight. Bonogin were forced to defend with many balls passing millimetres from the outside edge of the bat. Unfortunately, wickets eluded our quicks with Toby ending his six over spell with 0/10 and Harrison 0/9 runs off his six overs but overall, a fantastic start. Hamish Canning came on bowling his leg spinners and with his second ball hit the middle stump of the Bonogin opener. Chippa Schultz exclaimed as we came together “That ball really had something special on it” (or words to that effect). Noah McQueen kept the pressure up down one end returning 0/21 off 5 overs while Hamish 1/22 off 3 overs bowled from the other. Bonogin started lifting their run rate until Lachlan Barry slowed the pace down drawing the Bonogin number 3 out of his crease to be stumped (a term loosely applied to a fortunate deflection off the keeper’s body to dislodge the bails) by Geoff Watson. 2/65 at the 21st over. Lachlan finished with 1/27 off 6 overs. Arran Canning replaced Noah and toiled away for a couple of overs until he had the Bonogin number 4 caught by Geoff McQueen who showed lightning speed as he back pedalled to take a brilliant catch above his head, 3/98. The other Bonogin opener was a quietly accumulating runs until Arran snared his wicket with a great left handed catch by Will Altass at slip followed by a peach two balls later that knocked the off stump over of the Bonogin number 6 without troubling the scorers, 5-134. Arran finishing with 3/30 off 6 overs and the Bonogin innings concluding their innings at 5/145. Notable mentions go to James Keith who gave his all in the outfield but had to leave the field injured and Dale Rachow, playing his first senior match for Runaway Bay, was always in the action.
Set a target of 145 to win, ‘Unleash the Geoffs’ was the tactic at the beginning of our run chase but unfortunately both were back in the shade by the start of the 7th over, 2/12. This brought Will and Chippa together who started slowly but quickly accelerated with power hitting and quick singles until Chippa was caught in the 15th over for 38 off 29 balls, an innings that sparked Navy’s run chase, 3/64. Will and Toby accumulated runs with a mature and responsible approach until the 27th over when Will was caught for 29 off 67 balls. His steady innings in the middle overs was exactly what we needed to chip away at the runs, 4/115. Harry joined Toby at the crease and together they achieved the 145 total by the 34th over with patience and astute running between the wickets. Toby finishing on 37 not out off 59 balls guiding the team in the final overs and ably supported by Harry 9 not out off 18 who may be our youngest player at just 14 but demonstrated a mature focus to get the job done. Special thanks to James who expertly umpired the whole innings in discomfort.

Won the toss and we had a bat. Once again it was hard going with a large ground and a very slow outfield. The first wicket fell at 41, the 2nd at 57 and that was the half way mark of the innings. We batted a bit quicker after drinks with Rob getting 17 and Bob after a long lay off getting 16x. Jamie top scored with 38 and we made our way to 7/139.
A solid start by our openers Jason and Matt but no wickets. Tony Rowe and Rob came on and picked up a wicket each and really restricted the run rate so at the half way mark they were 2/44. Rob 6 overs 2/9 and Tony 6 Overs 1/14. Kaeleb came on and bowled well to get 2/32 from 6 overs and Arron 2 overs 1/6. With 4 overs to go they needed 21 and it was going down to the wire . 8 from the next 2 overs had it down to 13 from 2 overs. The next over went for 10 and they only needed 3 from the last which came from the3rd ball of the over. We did not get the result we wanted but at least there was no rain. Not looking like finals this year but we will give our best for the rest of the season .
