We Finally get a game
Senior Women’s Navy Sapphires

Runaway Bay Navy vs Queens Women’s First Game back 2025. Woo Hoo the heavens were gone and it was Game On for us ladies. After having our last 3 games abandoned there was excitement for us to hit the pitch! Firstly We would like to make a big warm welcome to Sonia ( Kels Sister) who finally made her Debut to cricket. Queens were very eager to get the game going, completing the toss with both the captains. Kelly finally winning the toss “Tales” and opting to bat first. Jade and Shana were our opening batters for the first 2 overs. Jade feeling a little “dusty” and after facing a few balls, decided the best option was to move out of the way and Queens taking their first wicket in her second over. Shana was ready and raring to go! Feeling confident at the crease hitting a four straight over Queens heads hitting the boundary. Continuing her confidence hitting 4 boundaries in her 15 balls faced. Shana finished with 22 off 15 Balls. Jade finding her groove, facing a very composed bowler was able run between the wickets taking some sneaking singles. Finishing on 14 from 15 balls. Sarah and Soni followed on. With Queens next few bowlers found it difficult for the girls hit the NB/Wides. Finally Sarah was able to slog the perfect ball finding a gap making our debut player Soni run for her life!Facing her very first cricket ball ever, Sonia was able to make bat to ball - Hesitating, whether to run or not. The wind then deciding to pick up which made it difficult for the bowler, with Sonia facing 3 NB after each other. Next ball Soni stepping forward, completing a sweep taking it leg side past the keeper making some runs. Sarah and Soni played shot for shot. Sarah 17 off 15 & Soni 16 from 15. Up next was Kirsten and Beck facing a really consistent bowler. Kirst getting off the mark hitting singles left right and centre. Unfortunately for her second over top edged the ball straight to the Queens fielder not once but twice. Finishing her score 19 from 15. Beck lined up trying to find her groove with the bat hitting singles here and there. Beck hit the perfect ball leg side straight to the fielder. Finishing her total 18 From 15. To finish off our batting innings Kel and Nic took to the pitch. Kel facing her first few balls all swing no ding. She finally came to the realisation that her bat was too heavy. Once she got her hands on a lighter bat she managed to get some bat on ball hitting 3 fours taking a top score of 24 from 15. Nic kept Kel running between wickets, poor Kel almost died. Nic hit 2 fours and made a total 18. We finished with a total of 5/183. With a solid total to defend and scoreboard pressure, the women headed in to bowl, and it was an all round performance Jade was first up, the nerves were tingling after so long since the last game, but Jade took it in her stride, her second over she bowled to their big hitters and finished 0/35 with 1 catch. Nic in true Nic style took the first wicket with the help of a masterful catch from Shana off the batsman, Kerry’s very first Ball and she shouted with glee finishing 1/27. Kel continued on from her brilliant batting innings with her bowling, with a nick to the keeper, Jade for her first wicket ( Deb) and then a fiery runout (Tabatha) that she continued to try for a second wicket hoping for LMS rules, sorry Kel not allowed she was told, Kelly finished 1/21 and a runout to her credit. Kirst bowled tight and with lightening speed, the queens women played all around her but she was just to good and was the only bowler not to concede a single boundary finishing a tight 0/15. Sarah also stepped up to the plate with a brilliant caught and bowled (Stacey) in her second over finishing 1/22. Beck was firing on all cylinders with another brilliant catch from Shana that batsman, Stacey skied off Becks last over, luckily Shana was there and ran in to catch a very difficult high one, Shanna needed both hands diving backwards landing hard on her backside and all we could hear was ouch echoing around the ground, but she held the catch, helping Beck to figures of 1/17. Sonia for her very first game was probably the most nervous of us all but she bowled like she had been playing all her life no wickets but her second over was super tight with only 3 singles off the over finishing with 0/14. Last but most definitely not least is Shana she had probably her most stand out innings. She was fiery and out for blood, after a few choice words in one of her overs she made sure they would remember her. Shana steamed in as our other fast bowler and she took aim she fired off a nasty pace ball and batsman, Deb tried to smash it but sent it flying back at Shana at pace Shana in excited glee stuck her hand up in the air, one handed she plucked the ball out of thin air and jumped up and down excited. She also run out Deb with the same fiery excitement. Shana finished with 1/16 with 3 catches and 1 runout, she was definitely trying out for the next super hero movie. It went right down to the wire with Queens squeezing over the line by just 9 runs at 7/192

Senior Women’s Pink

After months of frustration with washed out games, the Pink ladies anticipation was high. As we finally had the opportunity to play on our home ground, the excitement was palpable. Apparently even more palpable for the Surfers ladies, who arrived 1.5 hours before the match started!
Winning the toss felt like a victory, but then I didn’t know what to choose! After consultation with the ladies, we decided to have a bowl first so we could get an idea of what we would be chasing.
The Surfers ladies proved strong with the bat, punishing the loose balls and sending them to the boundary. Courtney was a stand-out, scoring 38 from her 15 balls, with 3 x 6’s in the mix.
Gee opened the bowling for the Bay ladies, tumbling the stumps from only her 2nd ball of the day, and then captured another wicket in her 2nd over. Faith also dominated with the wickets, taking 2 wickets in her 3 overs, with a brilliant catch from Cath in the outfield. Gaylene very excitedly took her first ever wicket with another cracking catch from Marnie.
All the training is paying off for some of the ladies in keeping the ball on the pitch and not giving away any extras. Sabreena, Emily, and Cath all bowled tidy overs without any going astray.
Surfers finished with 190 on the board and 5 out. We thought we might be in with a chance, but it would likely be a tight contest.
Cath and Emily opened the batting, with Cath displaying her natural ability with the bat (and ball!). We don’t see her a lot at training, but she shows up to the games and gets the job done, looking like she’s spent hours in the nets training! She hit 5 boundaries, ending with 27 runs. I still remain the singles specialist, much more at ease with finding fielders than boundaries! I spent a lot more time than I would like running between the wickets and ended on 18 from 15 balls.
Faith and Sabreena followed, facing the quality bowling and fielding from the Surfers ladies. They were unlucky to be run out a couple of times from what looked like an easy single any day of the week, but some brilliance in the field from the Surfers ladies proved otherwise.
Gee and Carol put on an explosive partnership to give us our best chance of getting ahead on the scoreboard. Gee found the boundary 6 times and came what seemed like only millimetres away on a couple of occasions. On her second last ball, she smashed a monster 6, with much cheering from the Bay gazebo! Carol pushed herself and ran hard to keep up with Gee. Not to play 2nd fiddle, Carol is always a pleasure to watch when she’s batting. She plays fantastic cricket shots and looks like the cricketer that some of us aspire to be. Gee finished with 39 and Carol with 24.
The dynamic duo, Gaylene and Marnie, brought the Bay ladies home. Again, the Surfers ladies best bowlers were challenging to hit, showing real class with the ball. The ladies both did well to find the occasional loose ball and took it on, running hard between the wickets.
Surfers came away victorious with 215 to the Bay 185. Surfers showed class on and off the field and were a pleasure to play against, even if the victory went their way. We felt like winners just being back and playing. Bring on Queens next week at Dux!
Emily.
