Seniors, Vets & Women's 11 &12/10/2025

First Grade

The 1st Grade side turned up to a Lovely looking Aussielec Oval, we lost the toss and where sent in which suited us after scoring 270 odd in our previous home game. It quickly showed that it wouldn’t be as easy as that this time but Yasiru and Talha worked hard and put on a 42 run opening partnership. Billy batted well again at three scoring an important 49 runs with 2 massive sixes. Roberto and Connor battled hard in the middle with the ball being hard to get to the fence with Connor getting a handy 37. The lower order pushed us to a score of 206 which we knew we could defend.

Suranga opened the Bowling and looked unplayable for 7 overs bowling a sharp bouncer to dismiss there no 3. Supported at the other end by Ben Canning who took 2 wickets. A good catch by Talha to dismiss there opening bat and snicking off there other openers. After a brief partnership Monib came on and took a quick 2fer to break up there middle order. Ted bowled with excellent control with a very aggressive field producing lots of chances and ended in being very unlucky. Suranga came back on to dismiss there no4 on 76 to get us right back on top. Yas also bowled well in a very important phase of the game. When we had them 8 down with them requiring 15 odd runs Billy Walker was handed the ball and after a few loose deliveries he delivered one ball which produced a run out, which was followed with him claiming he will get the winning wicket and he proceeded to do so giving us a 9 run victory over Palm Beach.

We are now 3 wins from 4 and go away to Queens next week.

2nd Grade

‘I’ve never played one of those before’, Jawid Ahmad 25.10.2025.

As round 4 of the season dawned, there was a sense of an opportunity to really test the mettle of the Bay 2s as we travelled south down the M1 to face Palm Beach at Salk Over. Are we the real deal in 25/26? Arriving at a ground that had traditionally been the setting of painful losses inflicted upon us, we were greeted by a pitch that looked like it had two or three consecutive days play on it by 11:30am. The green, soft patches were contrasted by the dusty footmarks from the juniors match earlier that morning. After grimacing and scratching our heads as to whether we batted or bowled, we resolved to bowl first in the hope that we could skittle a strong Palmy batting lineup and chase down a meagre total.

Despite the toss going our way I did start to question if we had made the right decision as the score moved passed 40 without loss. Mitch Bailey (1/31 from 6) however made the breakthrough within his signature short and wide delivery that was cut straight to point. Stevie “Weekly” Watson (1/35 from 6) picked up a soft dismissal from the northern end and all of a sudden, the scoreboard was looking more favourable at 2/54. With Mitch finishing a tidy spell from the southern end, Harry Sullivan took the ball and worked into that rhythm that we have come to expect over the years. Tom Gossett (2/24 from 8) partnered with Harry as we really began to apply the Bay squeeze. Wickets fell with regularity and in between there were just about no runs being scored. Over after over, Harry maintained a perfect line and length as he claimed the unbelievable figures of 3 for 13 from his 8 overs including 3 maidens. Harry’s spell was made even more impressive by the fact that his last over went for 6 runs. Palmy to their credit, put on a high quality 41 run partnership for the 8th wicket that saw them fight back from 7 for 83 before Jawid and Cam Davies closed out the innings with the score at 9/178. The pitch hadn’t looked great but it had definitely played well beyond our expectations. That being said, it was pretty clear that 178 was not a score we couldn’t get and as the team left the field, we agreed that if we didn’t chase this one down, it would be on the batters.

With ‘Blocker’ Boyd and Timmy Murdoch receiving call ups to first grade this week, I decided that I would partner Brendo at the top of the order in the hope of protecting the quality of our numbers 3,4 and 5. Our new opening partnership put on 35 before a ragging delivery caught my glove that was taken by the wicket keeper at full stretch down the leg side. While un-padding in the sheds, I overheard hoots and hollers that are synonymous with the fall of a big wicket and to my horror I learned that a mix up between the wickets had resulted in Jack Hocart being run out for just the single run. Tom Gossett received a violent bouncer which caught him between the peak and the grill of his helmet before falling to a classy piece of bowling the following delivery. After rattling Tom, Wilsom threw the next delivery up much fuller which caught the outside edge. When Lucas too was back on his way without troubling the scorers, we had slumped to 4/41. Austin Billing joined Brendo at the crease and the two began to look comfortable as the right-left hand partnership saw the field having to change almost every delivery. With the score creeping back into safety territory at 74 runs, Brendo sadly played on and was dismissed for a solid 29(55). Requiring 105 to win, Jawid was greeted by the usual un-creative suppositions from the Palmy boys regarding size of his chest and diameter of his biceps. In true classy fashion, Jawid ignored the opposition’s attempts to bait him into any verbal conflict. The partnership between Austin and Jawid that followed was a perfect display of symbiosis. The two provided perfectly contrasting styles of play of the highest quality you’re likely to see in 2nd grade cricket on the Gold Coast. Austin, protected Jawid expertly from the opposition bowling threats and manipulated the strike to ensure Jawid could gorge on the hopes of the Palmy boys. With a couple of swipes and a ball landing on the roof of a car parked at the skate bowl, Jawid spread the field and suddenly after being 5/74, we were well and truly on track as the score reached 5/90 at the 20 over mark. The break did nothing to quell Austin’s intensity nor Jawid’s brutality as the pair shifted into cruise control. The right, left-hand partnership was driving the Palmy boys crazy who made the mistaken (but common) assumption that Jawid is just a slogger as they stacked the leg side field. With massive gaps opening up on the off-side, Jawid cut, drove and sliced deliveries to the boundary. Once his eye was in, Jawid took aim at the Palmy spinner as he bludgeoned 22 from Piercy’s final over that was finished with 3 consecutive sixes. See image below of the biggest 6 of the match, which Jawid hit onto the roof of the Salk Nets at the northern end of the ground. Luckly one of the Palm Beach boys intercepted the RJR Turf King before it rolled onto Sarawak Avenue. With the end in sight and requiring just three runs for victory, “Iceman” Billing glided a ball through the vacant slips cordon to secure the W and the subsequent bonus point for the victory inside 30 overs. Austin’s and Jawid’s unbeaten stand of 106 runs was truly remarkable as Austin notched up 40*(46) while Jawid ended with 77*(42). Jawid’s knock included 8 fours and 5 monster 6s, one of which came from a reverse sweep that landed in the skate park. Jawid followed this most freakish of shots by whispering to Austin mid-pitch ‘I’ve never played one of those before’.

What a day! All bowlers contributed to restricting the opposition to a total that we knew we could get. Harry Sullivan’s performance with the ball was equally as crucial as Jawid’s knock. The biggest positive out of this week was that our 3 best batters scored 1 run between them and we STILL got the win AND a bonus point. It still hasn’t clicked yet boys. Is next week at Loxton against Queens going to be the day that it does?

RBCC V JIMBOOMBA

On Saturday we had the pleasure of an hour or so drive to the lovely ground and  facilities in Jimboomba,

We lost the toss and were sent into have a bowl missing one of our juniors and his dad due to being so far away and running late we started off with 10 on the field, We opened the bowling with the one and only Darran Greene and  George Edney These 2 got us off to an amazing start with darran bowling 4 overs 1 for 12 and Georgey bowling his 8 straight 2 wickets for 27 with his last over going for 12. George was absolutely superb getting us off to the great start we had, Josh hoare came on to replace Darran and once again was really economical bowling 6 overs 1 wicket for 9 runs josh was eager to keep bowling but with having travvy in the attack we needed the big little general if you know what l mean, Trav cleaning up bowling 4 overs 4 wickets for 14 runs, we bowled them out for 85. We were really good in the field and kept spirits high every single one of the boys played a massive roll in that fielding effort.

we opened the batting with our special little Englishman in Sterlo and Taika, knowing it wasn’t a huge chase we still needed to be switched on Taika was LBW in the first over which bought Bartlett to the crease, Being in the form of his life came out hitting a 36 off 34 balls including Six 4s, getting out caught and bowled after he skied one back to the bowler this bought out Sammy Heathwood, Sam looking really good him and Sterlo running really well between the wickets we chased the runs inside 16 overs Sammy finished 7 not out and Sterlo 29 not out, Double bonus point win for the mighty third Grade

4th Grade Orange

4th grade Orange vs surfers

We were away this week at Bruce Small no2 which as the name suggests  an extraordinary small ground with an even smaller narrow pitch,

With a strong northerly wind blowing lead to some challenging conditions.

Unfortunately losing the toss meant we were put into the field,

Surfers Paradise got off to a solid start losing their first wicket at 32 before putting on a partnership, at the half way mark of the innings Surfers was 1 for 120 off 18 overs and considering the conditions where basically any ball hit in the air with the wind was sailing over the fence, we thought we were doing a solid job and that 350 would be a par score.

Shortly after the break Noah McQueen struck and broke the 114 run partnership and removed the second opener for 87,  this unfortunately proved to be our only success for quite a while with the next pair putting together a partnership that proved difficult to break (233).

The winds compounded the challenge posed by the short boundaries.

The ball when lofted with the wind didn’t need to be hit well to carry over the rope, and alot of shots that would of been caught on Loxton 3 made it over the rope which led to the massive count of sixes being hit.

The Runaway Bay bowlers fought hard constantly having to adapt, either bowling into the wind (which required a lot more effort ) or with the wind (the increased pace which was used by the batsmen to hit long). This difficulty in execution contributed heavily to the very high economy rates seen across the scorecard.

Will Secombe's spell stands out as a beacon of control. His economy rate of 6.16 and the inclusion of the only maiden over innings suggests he managed to find a successful line and length, especially bowling into the wind effectively as he did, He claimed 1 wicket for 37 runs.

Some late strikes allowed us to restrict the score under 400 (small mercies) by removing the century makers (smith 145) & Chabert (125)

The two most successful wicket-takers, Nathan Foenander (2-27 in 2 overs) and Jack Castle (1-12 in 1 over), achieved their breakthroughs late in the innings but at a cost. Their very high economy rates (13.5 and 12) show that even when we managed to get a wicket, the batsmen were still dominating,

Frontline bowlers Josh Foenander (1-58 in 6 overs) and Noah McQueen (1-68 in 6 overs) were continually under pressure, with economy rates around the 10 to 11 mark,

The high total was less a failure of effort and more a reflection of the difficult conditions as the boys certainly put in alot of effort right to the last ball,

Its was now our turn to bat and spoke about being positive, batting out our overs & we wouldn’t be without a chance with the conditions.

We started our pursuit of Surfers big target of 391, opening the batting with Jamie Lennix(8) & young gun Will Altass (24)who put on 32 for first wicket before both openers departed,

this brought Josh Foenander to the crease and boy did he set off some fireworks smashing a brilliant 71 off 24 balls (8x4s & 6x6s) at strike rate of almost 300 & bringing up his 50 in just 15 balls It was breathtaking display of power hitting with Josh hitting some massive 6s against the wind to the longer end of the ground it was a spectacular innings to watch one that will be spoken about for years to come by the spectators lucky enough to witness it,

Josh was well supported by Will Secombe (15) who had the best seat in the house to the fireworks,

Will also put on a a 54 run partnership with  Stephen wolf who batted fantastically well again to unfortunately fall short of his half century making a hard hitting 43 off 27 balls (9x4s),

At the halfway mark of the innings we were 3/149 off 18 so in front of were surfers were but still a big mountain to climb and needing to continue the momentum,

Chris Castle and the skipper Col got together and the experienced pair set about upping the ante and taking the attack to the bowling and for a short time did just that as they put on 58 off 32 balls taking the score to 6/232 when Col departed for 34 off 18 (3x4s 2x6s),

Noah McQueen provided great support to Chris before he fell for a hard hitting 55 off 26 (6x4s 3x6s),

Unfortunately losing wickets regularly was pushing the rate up and putting massive amounts of pressure on the remaining batsmen who applied themselves admirably,

Noah (10), Jack Castle(20) off 18 2 boundaries, Nate Foenander 21no of 14 2x 4s 1 6 & Andy all fought the fight right to end but unfortunately the task was just to big, we finished with 317 , although it wasn’t enough it certainly was a fantastic effort and showed the team is really coming together and improving, the wins aren’t far away.

The next game is the Bay Vs Bay showdown next week when Orange plays Navy at the home of cricket Loxton 3,

See u all next week and GO BAY!!

Round 4 already & you guessed it, another home game away, this time just south of Cape York. We all boarded our chartered flight & arrived early Saturday morning. Waiting for us was Broadbeach, the skippers tossed the coin, Bizza had a rare win & decided to bowl first. We opened with Grossy & Schuey & as he’d done the previous 3 weeks, Grossy struck first & second, leaving them in trouble early at 2/7. Fridge was then introduced & struck early into his spell, Broady now 3/23. The next wicket didn’t fall until they had crawled to 105, but when we claimed our 4th there was a steady fall of wickets from then on leaving them 8/152 after their 36 overs. Best of the bowlers was again Mr. Gross finishing with the amazing figures of 2/4 from his 6 overs, the other wicket takers, Fridge 1/22, Aaron McKeon 1/33, Macca 1/15 & Critto bullied a couple of 11 year olds at the end, finishing with 2/14. Our turn to bat & we opened with another new partnership in Jamie & Critto. Critto was in a hurry & got off to a flyer, hitting 4’s at will while his partner could only watch the carnage at the other end because Critto also hogged the strike! Critto finally fell for 62 after belting the hapless attack for 12 4’s, the opening partnership yielding 94, well on our way to chasing their score. Next in was Brad, he came & went for 10 which brought Bizza out, him & Jamie lasted to drinks, our score 2/110 with only 61 to get. Jamie fell not long after the interval for a scratchy 42 which brought Nathan Rudd out to join Bizza with only 35 to get. Bizza decided to hit the remaing 35 himself, leaving Nathan to face just the 1 ball. We passed their score in the 22nd over, Bizz finishing with 56 from 29 balls including 5 massive sixes, one of which landed in one of the surrounding neighbours houses, prompting the owner, (a mad Scotsman) to march over to confront the batsman but once we assured him there was no chance of compensation he abruptly left with his kilt in a knot. Thanks to Nathan Rudd, Aaron Mckeon & Macca for filling in as we still haven’t received any compensation for the release of the Foenander triplets to 4th grade.... Our return flight was delayed, luckily Critto packed his barbie in his carry on luggage & cooked us up a feast, also supplying all the meat. Duane the Rock supplied the thirsty crew with some beers leaving everyone fed & refreshed for the flight home. Thanks to young Scout McGhie who hung around for the whole game so he could be in the team photo. 4 from 4 for us with some more challenging games to come. Cheers JH

Another day another toss loss (1/4) as we travelled far away again for a home game in Jacobs Well against Southport-Labrador. Luckily it didn't matter as we were sent in to bat. Firstly happy birthday to Coyney who turned 70 during the week and secondly, thank you to Mrs Coyne for gifting our crafty veteran with an actual cricket bat. He has now officially retired the fence paling he's been using since the 1700s! With his new wand in hand Coyne opened up to see what it was capable of with Braydon. It was obvious from the get go that this new stick really was a magic wand as Coyne found the boundary with ease while Braydon struggled to get going. On 4 Braydon inside edged one back onto his stumps and started marching off. As he was about to leave the field I called him back to the middle and signalled no ball as the tigers had 12 players on the field! Braydon went on to make them pay with a fast 88 until he finally went with the score at a whopping 1/188! Coyne kept making magic happen as Aidan came, looked good but went soon after. Haz was in next and partnered Coyne perfectly as they churned out the runs. Coyne brought up a huge hundred when he was finally run out from exhaustion on 159!! Quaid came out and looked good in the final couple of overs ending not out with Haz making his biggest senior score a magnificent 46 not out. We set a mammoth 334 runs. Dale and I opened the bowling and kept the tigers to 1/46 at first drinks. The opposition started to find the boundary at ease with their number 3 hitting a 6 over the road and into a locals front yard. With the pressure starting to mount I turned to our ever reliable junior Quaid, who bowled exceptionally and found the edge of the big hitter and with an equally impressive one handed catch running backwards over his head at fly slip by Travis! This was the breakthrough spell that inspired us as Dale took his chances in the field with a direct hit run out. 3/154 at 24 overs. We decided enough was enough and bowled our leading wicket taker for the year Haz in tandem with Mr Magic himself Coyney (to my surprise he didn't bowl with his new bat in hand). Haz didn't waste any time claiming 2 quick wickets in a row to be on a hat trick! The hat trick ball was sent down so hot you could hear it sizzle in the air and past the shaking bat by what looked less than a millimetre. Haz went on to claim 3 quality wickets and Coyneys magic continued, claiming 2/15 off 4 overs. After chasing leather in the outfield all afternoon Shana, making her senior men's debut sent rockets down the pitch that had Lucas rubbing his hands after the ball pounded into his gloves. When the batter was finally good enough to get near these missiles, Shana found the edge and a great catch was taken at first slip. Congratulations on your first wicket in the men's comp on debut! The tigers could only manage to accumulate 9/215 as we ran out victors by a sizeable 119 runs. This was truly a team effort headed by one of the oldest yet most respected players in the competition and supported by some of the youngest players in the competition playing beyond their years. It's a remarkable team to play in and a privilege to play alongside them all each week. GO BAY!!

Unlocking FrogBox Highlights with PlayHQ and LillyPad

This season, the Runaway Bay Cricket Club is excited to bring more of our cricket to life through FrogBox live streaming and highlight packages. We’ll be aiming to stream as many games as possible across Premier Cricket, Veterans, Juniors, and Women’s cricket, showcasing the talent and spirit of our club to family, friends, and supporters everywhere.

To make the most of this technology, we need the help of our scorers. The key lies in how we use PlayHQ alongside FrogBox’s highlight program, LillyPad. Here’s how it works: When live scoring in PlayHQ, you’ll notice a button on the screen labelled “Bowler Running In”*. This button should be pressed just before—or right as—the bowler begins their approach. Doing this triggers the recording of that particular ball, ensuring any exciting moment (like a wicket, a six, or a boundary) is captured for our highlight reel. By consistently pressing this button, our scorers help create accurate and exciting highlight packages that not only celebrate individual performances but also promote our teams and club culture. With everyone’s contribution, we can build a library of memorable moments that players and supporters will be able to watch back and enjoy for years to come. Let’s work together to make this season one to remember—both on and off the field.

Runaway Bay CC: Battling Spirit Shines Through Against Mudgee

It was another tough day at the office for the Bay boys, with a challenging week leading up to the game. A string of last-minute withdrawals meant that from the 13 originally listed, only 10 players took the field on the day — including our skipper bravely battling through a knee injury.

Despite the setbacks, the team’s spirits were high, and after winning the toss, we elected to bat first with confidence and optimism. A steady start had us thinking a total around 200 might be on the cards 😉.

However, the fall of a few quick wickets slowed our momentum, and by the drinks break we knew we’d need to lift the tempo. Unfortunately, wickets continued to tumble after the break, and despite a fighting effort from the tail — particularly the last wicket pair showing real grit — we finished with 99 runs on the board. On the bright side, we made them bowl their full 40 overs! 😊

With ball in hand, the Bay came out firing. Two early wickets had Mudgee on the ropes at 2/14, and for a moment, it looked like an upset could be brewing. But with only ten in the field, defending a low total was always going to be a tall order. The opposition eventually chased down the target in 14.1 overs, showing why they’ll be one of the teams to beat this season.

Despite the result, the boys can hold their heads high — plenty of positives to take away, especially the early bowling pressure and the never-say-die attitude right to the end.

Player of the Match:
Hard to single one out, but Matty Edwards takes the honors with a composed 23 not out and 1/37 with the ball — a solid all-round effort in testing conditions.

A tough day result-wise, but plenty of character shown. The Bay spirit is alive and well — onwards and upwards to next week! 💪🏏

Would you like me to make it sound a bit more humorous and casual (like a mate writing to other players) or more polished and professional (for sponsors and wider club readers)? I can easily tailor it either way.

Women’s Navy Sapphires

On a blistering, sunny Sunday at Sam Loxton Oval 3, the Runaway Bay Navy Seniors delivered a spectacular all-round team performance, spearheaded by a brilliant Player of the Match effort from Georgia, to secure a huge victory over the Tamborine Senior Women in the Senior Women Div 2 competition. Batting Blitz! After losing the toss and being sent into bat by Tamborine, Runaway Bay's openers immediately lit up the scoreboard. Despite the hot conditions, the batters showed relentless aggression, turning singles into doubles and boundaries into a flurry of runs. The team amassed a monumental score of 1-217 from their 20 overs, a testament to their deep batting lineup. The highlight reel belonged to G, who smashed a quick-fire 42 off just 15 balls, retiring not out after an innings studded with 3 fours and 3 massive sixes. Captain Cath provided a powerful start with 29 (15 balls), including a maximum, while Kirsten was electric, 28 off 15 balls, four of which sailed to the boundary. Crucially, Georgia finished the innings 18* not out, ensuring the high-scoring momentum was maintained until the final ball. Strong support also came from Shana (23) and Nicole (23). The single wicket lost—Evelyn run out for 13—was the only break the Tamborine side could catch, as the Runaway Bay women posted a formidable total. Tamborine Chased Down Facing an almost impossible target of 218, the Tamborine Senior Women could only manage 7-145 in their pursuit, falling short by 72 runs. The bowling attack was disciplined and relentless. Georgia was a standout with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 21 runs from her 3 overs to help dismantle the opposition's chase. Not to be outdone, G capped off an incredible individual performance by also taking 2 wickets for a miserly 7 runs from her 3 overs—an outstanding economy of 2.33. Crucial strikes came from Nicole (1-10), Shana (1-17), and Jade (1-19). In the end, Runaway Bay Navy Seniors proved to be too strong across both facets of the game, securing a convincing and well-deserved win! Georgia's dual contribution with bat and ball earned her the well-deserved Player of the Match honour.
