First Grade

At the weekend the 1st grade took on Southport in the Sam Loxton trophy.
This is a very important game for the club which we had the privilege of winning last year and the boys were extremely keen to regain. It was also a very important game for the team as if we won there was a high chance of leading the table.
We welcomed two English players into the side this week, Corey Flintoff and Jayden Denly. We were all excited to play alongside them.
We turned up and lost the toss for the 3rd time in a row. We were bowling first on a hard flat pitch with a bit of green on top. Corey and Suranga bowled exceptionally up top restricting them to 27 of the first 10 overs. Ben canning came on and got involved straight away. A catch by Ted on the boundary and we got the breakthrough. A few balls later Corey ran out there No3 and we had them on the ropes. I tried to support ben at the other end and going into drinks we had them 5 down. After drinks they produced a bit of a partnership as we brought the spin on. Jayden and Ted bowled exceptionally throughout the middle with them taking 5 between them. 3 for Ted and 2 for Jayden who should have had more. We bowled them out for 116.
We knew weather was coming in fast so i asked the boys if we can try and chase the total down as quickly as possible. As usual Yas and Talha got us off to a decent start. Both finding the boundary in the power play. We lost wickets in clumps after that but Jayden was the rock in the middle getting us close to the score. Creedy and Connor were excellent out in the middle when Southport were going in for the final few wickets. They got us just above Par before the Rain and Lightning brought this to and end. It was a fantastic game played in great spirit by both teams. We take the Sam Loxton trophy home for the second year in a row.

Thanks Billy and safe travels. See ya mate

2nd Grade

Daylight robbery or smart cricket?
A typical sultry November morning greeted the Bay 2s upon arrival at Golden Wheel Park where we were scheduled to take on the competition’s leaders, Southport Labrador. The top of the table clash gave both sides the opportunity to cement their positions as the number 1 side in Second Grade, roughly a quarter of the way through the season. After a wet week, the outfield was soggy and the pitch felt a little tacky. With the ground’s conditions in mind, we all agreed that bowling first might be the way to go. Sadly, I lost the toss, and we were sent into bat. With the chance of afternoon storms cutting yet another fixture short, our task was clear – we needed to put on a good total and hope that the weather held off long enough to secure points. While Brendo and James Stirling strode to the centre, the humidity must have been nudging 80% and as the sun peered through overcast skies, I spared a thought for the opposition, ‘Jeez those black jerseys must be hot’. After surviving two dropped catches, Brendo might have been forgiven for thinking Saturday 15 November 2025 was going to be his day. That was until he was rapped on the pads and adjudged LBW for 8(16). Brendo’s departure brought Jack Hocart to the crease to partner Stirlo and the two looked like a perfect match as they began to lay a platform for the middle order. The deck was indeed tacky and the ball wasn’t quite coming on. Despite this, the two managed to see off the new ball and began to frustrate the field with constant rotation of strike between left and right handers. With a few overs before drinks and the pair surpassing a 50 run partnership, it looked like we would be in a real position to go hard in the last 15 overs. But as is so often the case, a wicket fell around the drinks break with Stirling being bowled whilst trying to glide a delivery through the vacant third man region for a very well made 36(59). Upon the resumption of play, Tom Gossett joined Jack at the crease and while Hoc looked to be finding some rhythm, Tom (perhaps sensing that his aggregate award might be in jeopardy) set about trying to run Jack out. After 2 or 3 mid pitch conversations the pair reconciled and decided that the opposing leg spinner was the man to attack. Jack very quickly upped his strike rate from 50 to just over 75 after taking 24 runs from a single over that featured 3 sixes. Tom got in on the act also and the pair put on a 76 run partnership before Tom was caught for 33(22). With the score moving past 3 for 150 and with plenty of wickets left in the bank, Corey Hucker 5(10) came and went cheaply. Southport finally drew a false stroke from Hocey as he was dismissed for a quite suburb 83(85). Timmy ‘Tonker’ Murdoch 22*(17) and ADHD ‘red ink hunter’ Billing 20*(31) were left to whack it round for a few overs as we finished our innings at 5/218. Special mention to Timmy who belted a monster 6 off the bowling of GC Cricket Legend P. Johnston. With a sodden outfield and a sticky wicket, we suspected that our 220 odd was probably more like a 260-type score on Loxton 1 and as such we went into the break confident that we had an insurmountable total.
Ctrl C, Ctrl V ‘Stevie Watson takes first wicket’. With as much certainty as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, Stevie ‘Weekly’ Watson took the new ball from the southern end and only kept his teammates waiting 3 balls this week as he snicked off Labrador’s opener (1/0). George ‘Gimmie the breeze’ Edney partnered Stevie from the northern end and got in on the act with just his second ball, as he too snicked off an opener to leave the opposition 2 down without a single run on the board. As if writing the second act of our match, George couldn’t have scripted things any better as dismissed H. Shakespeare who’s innings stayed true to the expression ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’. The fall of the third opposition batter narrowly saw the runs column surpass the wickets column (3/4). Watching the two Bay juniors Edney (2/1 from 2) and Watson (1/7 from 3) get us off to such an amazing start, I selfishly wondered how I could get involved. ‘Ah ha! Rain. It might rain’, I thought to myself. The closing clouds and nearing rain provided me with the perfect opportunity to drag two young bowlers with no obvious justification than that of self-interest. Hoping to rush through to the 20 over mark required to constitute a game, Tom Gossett (2/9 from 8) took the ball from the northern end while I snatched the ball from the grasp of Stevie Watson at the other. ‘You’ve had your fun Steve. Now watch this trash’. Soon after starting his spell Tom struck with the big wicket of previous Bay, Surfers, Alberton player (and probably 5 or 6 other clubs) B. Flemming. As we reached the 10 over mark and despite the light not changing, the Southport Labrador batters inexplicably began struggling to pick up the 72km/h right arm rubbish I was slinging down whilst also claiming that Tom Gossett’s left-arm orthodox was too fast... With just minutes to spare before the rain came and the light truly did start to fade, we reached the 20 over mark with Southport Labrador absolutely sunk at 5/27. Play resumed briefly for 2 overs before lightning, rain and indeed poor light stopped play. After waiting around for 30mins or so, the Southport Labrador skipper approached to shake hands as a re-start seemed impossible.
Wow what a win fellas! The solidity of our top order really set the benchmark this week. We managed to consolidate every time a wicket fell and put on three key partnerships worth 62, 76 and 46s respectively. While the bowling figures may look odd, I feel it’s key to point out that if Stevie and George hadn’t started things off by picking up very early wickets, the side would not have been in a position to burgle through the last 15 overs in under 40mins. Next week we are back at home to face Surfers at Loxton 1.

3rd Grade
This week our Undefeated 3rd Grade side had a week off due to the bye

Jared Austin from our sponsors A & K Tile wins Saturdays meat tray

We rolled into Rugby Park full of confidence, though all of us were keeping one eye on the sky. The forecast promised a late-afternoon storm, and with Rugby Park having been a bit of a hoodoo ground for the Bay in years gone by, we knew we were in for a day of challenges—both from the opposition and the weather.
I lost the toss and Coomera sent us into the field first. Toby Hudson and Craig McHie took the new ball and worked hard early, but Coomera got off to a solid start. The outfield was quick, the pitch was true, and despite some tight bowling, they settled nicely. I managed to break the opening stand with the score on 57, but unfortunately that only slowed them rather than stopped them.
From there, it was a grind. Every bowler copped some tap at different stages as Coomera kept the scoreboard ticking. CHI eventually finished on a commanding 7/269 from their 36 overs. Sam Heathwood was the standout with the ball, grabbing 3 wickets, while I chipped in with 2, and Brad Collett was desperately unlucky not to come away with more—comfortably the most economical of us on the day.
We knew we needed to get moving with the bat right from the first over, especially with that forecasted storm building in the distance. Unfortunately, early wickets to Jamie and Flynn pushed the Duckworth–Lewis par score further out of reach, and from that moment we were constantly chasing the game. In our efforts to keep up with the rate, wickets continued to fall.
One shining light was Sam Heathwood, backing up his bowling effort with a composed 25 at number 3*, showing exactly the temperament we needed in tricky conditions. But with the storm rolling in and the scoreboard pressure unrelenting, we could only manage 7/74 from 24 overs.
A tough day, but a valuable learning experience for the group—especially around how we approach a chase when weather is in play. We’ll take the lessons, reset, and come back stronger next round.
Go the Bay!

4th Grade Orange

Rd 7 bay 4s Orange vs Burleigh
Hello again bay family.. this week has us on the road once again, we are living up to the road warriors tag thats for sure.
This time we were at the Elanora state school to play Burleigh.
With the forecast saying rain and lightning coming, we won the toss and chose to bowl hopeful of a repeat of last week’s bowling performance,
We started well with Will Altass removing both openers, it was going to plan at 2/21 but unfortunately Burleigh had other ideas building partnerships the first of which was 73 when we got the 3rd wicket at 94, James Munro removed their young left hander via a Sharp catch in the gully from Jamie, thinking if we could remove the experienced miller at the other end we could make inroads into there batting, but unfortunately the frustration continued with seasoned cricketer Leroy Phillips coming in and the pair put on 71 taking them to 4/165 when Col grabbed an afl style catch on the long on fence off Nate Foenander to remove Miller for 80, unfortunately we hadn’t helped ourselves by dropping some catches and miss fields which added to our frustration,
4/165 off 26 overs we had 10 overs to restrict them to a gettable score around 200 but unfortunately this didn’t eventuate with Phillips upping the ante & on such a small ground with a fast outfield it was difficult to restrict the scoring,
We did get some success late in the innings when Jack Castle came on and picked up 3 wickets 2 in his first over to be our most successful bowler 3/37 off 4 overs,
at the end of the 36 overs Burleigh had put on a sizeable 7/256 which was certainly going to be a tough chase,
Our bowlers battled hard and the pick of the them was young Noah McQueen 0/19 (6) he didn’t get the success he deserved with chances not going to hand but was a handful for even the experienced batters, the two Will’s Secombe 0/15(4)& Altass 2/45(6) bowled a good spells with the new ball,
James 1/46(6) , Nate 1/39(4) , Jamie 0/15(2) , Birdy 0/33(3) all tried hard but didn’t get the results we had hoped for, we certainly needed to fight back with the bat.
With the clouds rolling in & the darkness falling on us we sent out Birdy & Andy to start us off,
but unfortunately Andy’s stay was short guiding one straight to slip off their very very young looking and sized leg spinner,
1/3 wasn’t the start we were hoping for Col joined birdy but unfortunately this partnership didn’t last as long as we hoped it would when birdy was given out caught behind,
Will Altass then smashed a short ball 2nd ball but unfortunately hadn’t noticed the guy back on the fence and picked him out 3/17 we were in a bit of trouble but the man for a crisis Stephen Wolf aka Wolfy came to the wicket & did what he does steadying the ship, him and Col took us to 35 before Col trying to push the score up for the DLS holed out to long on for 18, 4/35 when Jamie Lennix joined Wolfy and the pair steered us to 4/64 when the lightning started quickly followed by rain and the match was abandoned,
Wasn’t our greatest game by any stretch but we will move on next week when we travel south again to take on Bond Uni at Mallawa, Palm beach,
Thanks for your support bay family see you all next week GO BAY!!!

We travelled to take on the undefeated Palm Beach on their home deck. With an important coin toss to have and Darren not available I took it and surprise surprise I lost it. With Palmy clearly underestimating us, sent us in to bat in the hope they could roll us and chase us down before the storms hit. Greg and Sam opened the batting. In comical fashion Sam tried to hit the first ball he faced to the moon and was dropped due to the ball being so hot from re-entry into the atmosphere. Greg rotated the strike nicely to get Sam back on strike who was clearly on a mission. Greg was the first to go chopping on and Sam went shortly after for a quick fired 63. They had set us up nicely at 2/80. In at 3 came Sameera "Smudge" Surendra (who claimed likeness to Steve Smith during the week) and actually batted superbly as he used good cricket shots to keep the runs ticking over. Unfortunately we lost another wicket on the last ball before drinks 3/125. Batters regularly came and went which slowed the run rate, but Smudge continued to toil away until he fell for 69. The tail wagged and we ended our innings 9-219. Palmy had clearly not expected that and for the first time in 3 years, they moved their field from 6 catchers behind the stumps to every fielder on the boundary! The message at the break was early wickets and restrict runs as the opposition is full of guys who can clear the boundary. I opened up with Dale, and we created regular chances but the catches kept going down. Dale took the first wicket clean bowling the opener. After I bowled 3 unlucky overs, I brought on Harrison "The Giant Killer" Rachow, who just knows how to find a way to get wickets. And that he did!! Haz regularly forced miss hits due to his intelligent bowling to different batters and claimed 2 wickets being caught from said miss hits. The Giant killer then claimed another 2 wickets sending the stumps cartwheeling past the poor keeper like ninja stars flying through the air!! Smudge bowled 1 over, and in likeness to Smith who entered the team as a bowler, is now considered a batter after returning figures I refuse to enter here.... Unfortunately the storm came in and ruined our chances of a certain upset but our spirits are high after witnessing a great team performance. Man of the match clearly had to go to Haz, returning figures of 4/25 (4) as he absolutely decimated Palmy's top order. As a team we now have the strong belief that we can achieve anything if we all play our roles.

Unlocking FrogBox Highlights with PlayHQ and LillyPad
This season, the Runaway Bay Cricket Club is excited to bring more of our cricket to life through FrogBox live streaming and highlight packages. We’ll be aiming to stream as many games as possible across Premier Cricket, Veterans, Juniors, and Women’s cricket, showcasing the talent and spirit of our club to family, friends, and supporters everywhere.
To make the most of this technology, we need the help of our scorers. The key lies in how we use PlayHQ alongside FrogBox’s highlight program, LillyPad. Here’s how it works: When live scoring in PlayHQ, you’ll notice a button on the screen labelled “Bowler Running In”*. This button should be pressed just before—or right as—the bowler begins their approach. Doing this triggers the recording of that particular ball, ensuring any exciting moment (like a wicket, a six, or a boundary) is captured for our highlight reel. By consistently pressing this button, our scorers help create accurate and exciting highlight packages that not only celebrate individual performances but also promote our teams and club culture. With everyone’s contribution, we can build a library of memorable moments that players and supporters will be able to watch back and enjoy for years to come. Let’s work together to make this season one to remember—both on and off the field.

Over 40’s Div 2

40s Div 2 Rd 4 vs Mudgeeraba
Sunday found us at home @Loxton 1 but unfortunately the weather gods weren’t helping us out, the overnight rain had definitely had an impact on the northern end of the ground which was a bit damp, the rest of the ground had handled the rain very well though so the umpire instructed that with a bit of work on the northern run-ups we can start at 10.45, so after some super sopper work we got under way,
Mudgeeraba won the toss and chose to have a bat something we were happy with,
We opened the bowling with Jason Hay who hit the deck hard and was a handful,
Speaking of handfuls at the other end was our very own rockstar himself Trav Harker who tore apart the Mudgee top order reducing them to 4/22 off 7.2 overs,
Unfortunately we only got a couple more overs bowled before the heavens opened up and put paid to our chances of getting a game.
Trav 4/12 off 4.1 overs
Jason 0/11 (3)
Shuey 0/4 (2)
So unfortunately we didn’t get a result but we stay undefeated and will be back in couple of weeks again at home vs Tambourine,
see you all soon GO BAY!!!
